VFR Discussion Group -> Hot weather gear...

I have and recomend the Teknic perforated leather. Both the jacket and pants are incredibly cool in the NC heat. The pants are as comfortable as an old pair of sweats!

I have a JR fully perforated leather jacket.  It's great as long as you are moving, but hot sitting in traffic.  In the South, you could be buck naked and you would still be hot sitting in traffic.  

I still haven't found what I want in pants, so I'm wearing Levi's also.  Hopefully I'll remedy that situation in the next few months.

I wear leathers all year long. Yes........it gets pretty hot, but I feel better protected and it is worth the minor discomfort of sweating a bit. I drink lots of water to compensate.

I wear a firstgear leather/mesh jacket. Not as good as a leather jacket, but much more comfortable. What good is a leather jacket if you pass out from heat exhaustion? By the way, I have a perferated leather jacket, that I wear with a liner in the winter. The perferations don't do much IMO. <_<

I have the JR phoenix mesh jacket. I got it when I lived in Houston TX. The summers there a freakin hot. It was great in the heat. It has elbow and back protection. It is perfect for hot weather. Nice and light. :D

I have a really a cool armor plated thong that keeps the boys pretty cool. :lol: But seriously, JR mesh pants and jacket for now. Plan on getting some perf leather this year.

They don't do much unless the jacket is fully perforated, front and back, top to bottom. (except the elbows and shoulders) :)

They don't do anything except cook you unless you are moving at a decent pace. :(

I ride in shorts and a t-shirt.....helmet makes head get too hot so i ditch that too..... then if im still too hot ill ride wheelies in traffic...

Shhhhh!! im just trying to make the gulible folk here believe me B)

Even with the perforated leathers I get a bit hot, but they do flow a decent amount of air once you are moving. A definite improvment over my non perforated leathers.

I live & ride in Far North Queensland, Australia - around the Cairns region. For those that have no idea this is in the "Tropics" & at this time of year we are having 35C temps, BUT more importantly 80% humidity caused by the monsoonal rains most nights then the high temps during the day. Like riding in a sauna.

I wear the latest Dririder Dri-Mesh jacket which is just awesome with a silver metallic thread to the outer mesh, reinforced to impact areas and with CE Armour to elbows, shoulders & back. Also comes with zip in waterproof liner & a zip in thermal liner for winters. This jacket is so much cooler with a heap more protection than my kevlar reinforced Brosh Ultra Cool jacket from Israel.

I don't know whether you guys can get Dririder over there but they really are quality gear. Wearing leather at this time of the year here would seriously be a health risk.

I recently acquired an A* SMX-Air jacket. It has a windproof / water-resistent liner so that helps keep me warm even now when combined with a fleece vest.

Hopefully it keeps me cool enough in the summer. It feels pretty light, so I think I'll be happy with it (I better be, anywho). My non-per leather jacket just plain toasts me in the summer heat. My Joe Rocket pants toast me, so I'll have to find something different once the heat packs on. I think leather would be cooler than these as I found out after purchasing them that they are waterproof.

Still thinking about a Z custom 2 piece perfed leather suit. :)

I've seen some great reviews about FirstGear's MeshTex 2 jacket compared to some of the JR mesh jackets. The current version comes with a liner. I've seen them advertised for around $125 with free shipping on the net.

I have one of those also. It works great in the late fall and early spring or anytime the temp is below 70. Put the liner in and your good from about 45-55 degrees. Much above 70-75 and that thing's a sauna...I'm thinking perf leather would actually be cooler. (insert Gatrorade needed emitcon here) The mesh pattern is much tighter and smaller than the JR and I would think it would hold up better in a get off, just opinion.

First Gear mesh jacket and draggin jeans. Good for heat, not so much for protection. Jeans have nada padding and jacket material seems fairly flimsy for an extended highway slide.

Are you guys kidding me? In January? Today is the first significant temperature raise since XMAS. It may melt about an inch or two of the three feet we have received.

You southern folk are so lucky. :)

If want to go with mesh, the Alpinestars T-Stunt Airflow is about the most substantial mesh jacket I have seen. Excellent armour and the mesh seems tight and sturdy as compared to some of the others I have seen. It is a bit pricey. I believe Newenough has it for under $200.

Olympia mesh jackets are going to be as cool as any mesh, and have the added benefit of full-CE armor. The critical areas are covered in heavy duty Cordura. About as good as you can get with mesh, for protection.

I have a Joe Rocket Reactor jacket, which is relatively cool, but about worthless for protetion, ditto draggin' jeans...okay for abrasion, but no impact protection.

Olympia will have zip-together mesh pants at the end of February.

Rukka makes perhaps the most versatile suits with the most protection...the Rukka APR3. They're very expensive, but much cheaper than a single ER procedure. It's my opinion the Rukka is the most protective gear this side of CE-armored leather.

Two inexpensive assists are phase change clothing and evaporative vests.

I use a phase change long sleeve t-shirt from www.coolstuff.com, and it helps in the heat, under mesh. Evaporative vests help a lot in the Texas heat.
