Oil Leak

I have a 99 vfr and when I was riding a huge cloud of smoke appeared so I parked it at home and the next morning a pile of oil was on the ground on the left side of my bike does anyone know what this could be

It could possibly have been over-filled, maybe when the oil was changed - maybe re-check the level. The oil filter also comes to mind - possibly loose, or the gasket from the prior filter stuck to the block when it was replaced. Lastly, the oil cooler lines are external, if one worked loose (unlikely) any leaks there could also drop oil. VFR's are not known for oil leaks. My guess as most likely is the filter if it was running fine and it occurred suddenly.

I was leaking oil out of the shift shaft seal for a while, but it was only a few drops. It was an easy fix.

I was also leaking a considerable amount of oil out of the oil cooler lines at the rubber joints. That was a simple hose clamp fix.

I would start with those two things as well as the oil filter.

I had this on my VF

Looking up from underneath the collectorbox:

remove the cover and...............

Look up how to remove the cover on your 99, put the bolts you remove down on a pice of paper and note their location

You may put a clamp over the piston to stop it from coming out and for sure donot operate the clutch lever

To trouble shoot an oil leak start by tracing the wet trail back to its the highest point to determine the origin... if the origin stops mid

cylinder then investigate a possible blow head gasket by taking a compression test to verify the effective cylinder...
