Hey All, Soon To Be Vfr Owner In Indiana

Hey guys, 

My name is Mitch. I am a 24 year old Master's of Public Health student and I live in Indianapolis. I'm currently in the market for a 4th or 5th gen VFR so I will be a part of your community soon enough.

I looked at a 99 today and took it for a very short ride around a neighborhood. It was raining so I didn't go very far or very quickly but got a feel for the seating position and everything. It had a staintune muffler and I have to say...it sounded phenomenal. Frankly the sound is half the reason I'm looking at VFR's in the first place. The comfort/reliability makes up the other half. I used to ride a 2004 Honda 599 with a similar seating position but the seat was nowhere near as comfortable as the corbin on that VFR and the sound isn't even in the ballpark.

A VFR will not be my first experience with V4 Honda's. I also own a 94 Magna with quite a few modifications that I absolutely love. I am just looking to add another V4 to the collection.  :wink:

The only question I have is, is the valvetrain whine on the 4th gens louder or quieter than the 5th gens? I know they relocated the gears on the 5th gen and I have only ever heard a 5th gen in person(loved it). I don't have a ton of reasons to consider a 4th right now as there are none for sale around me but I am just curious anyway.

Good luck from another VFR owning Hoosier!  Magnas are great sounding bikes as well, my neighbor has a yellow one.

You can't go wrong with a 4th or 5th gen, both have their merits... and minor annoyances lol

I would expect the whine to be louder on the 5th gen as the drive is on the right side of the motor. Earlier gens had a centrally located cam drive.

Welcome!  Love the Magnas - beautiful bikes.  You'd love a 4th or 5th gen, tho the 5th is injected vs carbs on the 4th - if you have a preference. 

Right in your neighborhood so to speak in Fort Wayne is the suspension tuner many of us here use - Jamie Daugherty.  He's done a lot of VFR's and can really transform the handling.

I have a '99 and live in Batesville, IN.  I have also owned two Gen 4's.  I like both for different reasons.  The Gen 4 is more flickable.  The Gen 5 is more refined with better instrument cluster and no fooling with carbs.  Get a '98 or '99 if a 5th Gen as they have no catalytic converter.  When you get a VFR and want to ride the twisties down this way, give me a yell.

To be honest I have a preference for carbs, I always find the throttle response to be a little bit better (if tuned properly and not factory lean) plus they're easy to tune on the cheap in the garage. That being said, I think I prefer the cosmetics of the 5th gens to the 4th gens (best looking VFR is a pearl white 93 IMO) so that's kind of a wash. Plus the gauges on the 5th are better and so are the lights. Add the louder gear whine and I think a 5th is in my future. 

Regarding the magna, I love mine. I've had it for a few years and don't plan to sell it anytime soon. It's really responsive for a cruiser and I still find it comfortable (although not so much now with the drag bars haha). 

I just finished upgrading it's tires this weekend. Off with the old shitty metzlers, on with some nice new pirelli night dragons. Stepped up the rear from 150 to 180.

Welcome to the asylum from someone who has five fifth gens in nine years (two were KIA'd by deer). And absolutely loved every one of the more than 140,000 miles I've put on them. Aerodynamic, gear driven cams, fuel injection (carbs are f'n majik to me), ideal position compromise, and capable of hauling six weeks worth of camping gear. And mine have been getting 50+ mpg when ridden carefully. I consider myself very lucky that a pristine '01 was advertised just when I started looking for a long-distance touring machine that was fun to ride when you got there. It was the only bike I tested and I've never looked back.

I actually went and bought back my 2004 Honda 599 today. The guy I sold it too just got a road king and was willing to let it go cheap so I couldn't pass on the deal.

I still think a VFR is in my near future. I imagine that when the V Star sells I will buy a VFR with that money and then re-sell this 599 in a few months. The way I see it, having the 599 buys me a little patience to find the RIGHT vfr and not just a vfr I can afford. I still really need to ride a VFR more than just around a guy's neighborhood so I can get a feel for it. 

The short story is that I bought the 599 from a good friend, wrecked it(not a bad crash), rebuilt it(mainly just bent forks and broken levers), sold it, and re-bought it so I guess you'd say we have a bit of a history that bike and I. I'm not sure what is going to happen honestly.
