Newbie From Melbourne

Hi all.  Just got myself my first VFR today, so thought I'd better introduce myself as I'll probably be needing your help here and there......

I'm in my early 40s now, and haven't ridden properly for over 15 years.  Used to do a lot of road riding as an irresponsible kid, then a couple of years of racing in 250 production on an RGV250, then a season on an F2 FZR 400/600. 

Last year I had the holiday of a lifetime, and part of it was riding around the UK for 2 weeks and then going to the IoM TT with a mate, he on his GSXR and me on his KTM990 Adventure.  It was incredible, and gave me the bug to get a bike again.  I even got to do a couple of laps of the TT course, which was incredible, even on the big old bus of a KTM.

My favourite bike of all time is the RC30 (and I saw my first one at the TT), so I'd occasionally thought about doing a replica based on a VFR.  When I got back from my holiday I asked my boss (who is a huge bike guy, probably owns over 100 bikes) to let me know if he heard of one for sale.  Long story short, I got a big job done on time and under budget, so my boss decided to give me his 94 VFR as a bonus.  Pretty sweet deal.

It seems like a pretty good bike, looks like it's never been dropped, 89k km on the clock.  Brakes are off it at the moment, so I'll rebuild them and fit, check valve clearances, check all bearings etc, and get it ready for the road.  I figure I'll ride it for a while, and decide whether I want to go ahead with the RC30 replica, or just leave it stock.  I've never ridden a VFR, so I'm really looking forward to it, as I've only ever heard good things about them. 

Of course when I was young I used to lust after GSXRs and ZXRs, and deride VFRs as an old mans bike, but with the benefit of accrued wisdom, and of course being an old man now, I reckon the VFR is probably the perfect bike for me at this stage in my biking life.

Anyway, look forward to contributing to, and getting answers from, this forum.  Attached a pic of the VFR as it arrived today, can't wait to clear some space in the garage and get stuck into it.

Nice score there mate. I too have yet to ride a VFR and currently on the look out for one to test ride then possible buy. Being similar age to yourself (39) i'm thinking everything ive read about the VFR makes them the perfect bike for me as i have no desire to do knee down time trials through the Adelaide hills, but rather enjoy a spirited ride in comfort and enjoy riding for what it is and hopefully on a VFR :)

Yeah, I'm with you there Adelaide VFR, I no longer have the need to be going knee-down everywhere.  That's part of the reason I haven't had a bike for about 15 years, I just knew that once I got one I'd want to be getting back to my old ways of going crazy everywhere, and then get a track bike etc, etc.  I've been doing track days in a car for the last 10 years (and will keep doing so as long as I can), so that seems to have got it out of my system, I'm fairly sedate on the road these days.  Riding the big KTM around the UK last year made me realise that I didn't have to go crazy everywhere, but I could still have a great time on a bike.  That said, I gave it a fair old flogging over some Scottish highland roads, and the mountain part of the TT course where it was unrestricted speed and one-way traffic.  Highly recommended. 

Anyhoo, like I said, I'll get the VFR up and running, then decide whether I want to go ahead with an RC30 replica.  I'm kinda worried that the standard VFR is going to be so nice I won't want to change a thing.  But, we'll see soon.

Ha!!  I remember buying that very issue!  Haven't got the hat or glasses yet, but definitely the pipe and slippers......

I owned that issue............   yes I am old.....
