I have a 1998 VFR800 (5th gen? the first 800) from which I was trying to remove a Scottoiler connected to a vacuum hose. In doing so it appears that I have snapped the connector on the airbox. I was surprised, when holding the connector in my hand, that it doesn't have any holes or other means for the hose to do anything. This being the case, what are the vacuum hoses used for, other than to allow me to fit 4 Scottoilers?

No worries mate, just keep it plugged. It's a vacuum tube (1 of 4) that goes to each throttle body that's only used when adjusting or balancing the throttle bodies.
Just plug bake in the broken tip or plug it another way so that it's air tight and you will have no problems.

There are 4 hoses that connect to the air filer, if this is what your are talking about? They are just plugged in to the filer and don't do a thing for the operation of the bike they are just hooked up there for easy attachment to gauges. They are for syncing the throttle bodies when connected to vacuum gauges otherwise they need to be blocked.
