Im seriously considering buying an 02 VFR, and got an insurance quote from Markel, where I have reasonably priced coverage ($480/year) for my K1200RS. They quoted me $1200 because they list the VFR as a Sportbike.
Is there another company that does business in CA that classifies the VFR differently?
I did a search, and didnt find anything, so I hope this hasnt been covered recently, and that Im putting this in the right forum

You might check State Farm Insurance they are resonable and have been around awhile.

Also try AIG.
Try Progressive, they list the vfr as "street sport", which isn't as bad as "high performance".
I had a good rate with Progressive, I forget how much right off, but well below $1200 a year. Then I added a CBR954 to the family. They wanted over $2,000 for that bike alone, even though it was a second bike. Never made a claim either. Needless to say, I fired them for a package deal on both bikes and a pickup. This thru AAA.
You gotta shop around. Figure out what coverages you want and what limits, pick up the phone and start making calls. .
2003 VFR800FI, Age 39, no wrecks or tickets in two decades. Progressive wanted $3200 per year. American Family wanted $2650 per year, and I settled for All State at $1600 per year.
Liability only is $650 per year.
Arizona is expensive!
After a LOT of phone calls and comparing I was able to find the lowest rate with AAA. Full coverage (no medical), 15/30, with a $1000 deductable is $352 per year. If I wanted a $500 deductable it would add $49 per year. I was quoted this rate about 2 weeks ago. You've got to be a AAA member to receive insurance from them. It'll cost me $67 per year but my fiance and I use this service anyway. Not bad at all.
VFRMike.
...Forgot to mention this is for an 02 VFR.
Y'all must be fully covering your bike's with comprehension, collission, AND liability no? I pay $300 a year with Pacific Specialty Insurance on my '91, which I got through McGraw Insurance Brokerage Service. The first year I paid an extra bit for "brokerage fees" but those have since subsided. I have only liability coverage, however, which may be why mine is so much less than yours. Good luck finding good insurance!

I have "shopped" my insurance every year. State Farm is great. But, I suggest a "face to face" with the agent. They can work the numbers.
PSIC/McGraw is the best deal around. Markel wanted to charge me over $1,400 (!) for my '03 with $1,000 deductibles and 100/300/50 liability limits (if you're a homeowner, you want the highest liability limits you can get), and PSIC only charged $500 (!!) for the same liability limits and $350 deductibles! Yeah, I got dinged for a $100 brokerage fee, but it was WELL worth it!!
SF Bay Area, no tickets, 02 VFR, State Farm:
250k/500k/100k liability, 250k/500k uninsured/underinsured, 500 comprehensive, 1000 collision
$351/6 months
Just the liability is $89/6 mo, uninsured is $77/6 mo.
The minimum legally required liability only is pretty cheap compared to full coverage. Since I owe no money on my bikes I could go with the minimum, and shoulder the risk of loss myself. For now I go full coverage. Too much money involved. :p
I'm not understanding these insurance prices. I own an 02 VFR and pay $300 a year for comprehensive and liability with $500 deductable with GEICO. I've also insure 4 other bikes through GEICO in the last year and presently have my auto insurance throught them.
I have an OK record with no wrecks and indicated I ride 6000k per year.
I personally have used Allstate, Geico and Progressive and have always have reasonable quotes with them.

Simple Guy, Jan 18 2005, 04:07 PMI'm not understanding these insurance prices. I own an 02 VFR and pay $300 a year for comprehensive and liability with $500 deductable with GEICO.
I don't understand it either -- when I got my R1100RT about 5 years ago, GEICO quoted me over $2K, but I was able to get the same coverage for under $300 from GMAC. And I'm probably only 40 miles away from where you are.
I did get a good quote from McGraw, although they see an accident on my record (04-02) that Markel told me already came off. I asked McGraw what the cost would be after April, and it was around $350/year. I asked them to quote on the RS, and McGraw wants over $700/year, after the accident drops, while Markel's charging $480/year for the RS.
If I want to buy the bike now, I'll just get liability coverage from Progressive ($140/year for liability, $1,400/year full coverage!) , and replace the policy in April with full coverage from McGraw - but only for the VFR -- if I keep the RS, it'll stay on Markel's policy.
I'm definitely not understanding insurance prices either.

I'm with AAA also and they were MUCH cheaper than than say Progressive(4X's more???)
Might want to give them a try......if you insure your home and vehicles you get a price break.
I just paid mine...
03 VFR
bodily inj 25,000/50,000
property 25,000
500.00 deductible
500.00 " " collision
uninsured motor same coverage as above
203.00 for 6mo.
State Farm :D
I pay 2200 a year for and 05 VFR ABS and a 04 Goldwing ABS. The VFR is about 1000. I've called all over the place, and everyone is giving me higher quotes than that. It has a lot to do with how long you have had a motorcycle license and whether or not you have taken at MSF course (in some cases). I'm taking the experienced riders course because they give you 10% off your premium. I have GEICO. Progressive wanted 4k just for the goldwing.
I'm 27 and live in so cal.
I have no tickets and no accidents.

Wow. I'm glad I live in the sticks. I pay about $225 a
year for full coverage on my '04. There was only about $5 difference in the lowest and highest deductible, so I went with the lowest.
I am 46 years old, no tickets or wrecks, and Geico was the best deal I could find here in the Dallas, Tx. area. Dairyland wanted $1700/year just for the VFR. Geico quoted me $440./year Full Coverage for both the VFR and my 1999 Yamaha Venture (big touring bike). Needless to say, I cancelled with Dairyland and went with Geico.
I just talked to some agencies. Since I've had my licnese for less than 1 year.. um despite being a long-time rider :), they charge more money.
McGraw said they would take off 500. Wow.
OK, I just talked to statefarm...
for 100/300 (liability) and 50/100 (uninsured motorist), medical payments, and comprehensive and collission, they just quoted me 860 for my goldwing and 814 for my VFR.
That's a really good deal compared to what I'm paying now.
I'm gonna have to swtich.
25K/50K/25K liability, comprehensive, collision, no medical, $250 deductible for both the 2000 VFR and the 2002 Ninja 250R with Nationwide Insurance runs me $286/year for both. I have been with this company for over 8 years. They have served me very well during the one accident in which I got pushed off the road by on-coming traffic. They totalled the bike, paid me a very fair market value for it, and replaced all the damaged riding gear.
hey guys,
with comp, collision, liability, and a $500 deductible on a '04 VFR, plus a '99 tacoma pre-runner, USAA charges me just over $1100 a year. That's just $160 for the bike! I couldn't believe it when they quoted me over the phone. Most of the other quotes were + $1500 for the bike alone. Good luck. Oh, yea, Im in LOW CAL also. Go figure.

Arizona is expensive!
Arizona is definitely expensive, but there are better places than Progressive. Progressive wanted $2400 a year for full coverage on my 2000 VFR, woman rider, 7 yrs riding, no accidents or tickets at all, with an MSF class. Geico got it down to $1200 with a $500 comp deductible (which is good considering someone just tried to steal it two hours ago!!!) and when I took off the collision (at $1000 deductible anyways) it went down to $450 a year.
go for it Hondachic!
to all of you guys that mentioned Gieco. I was in the service over seas with Gieco insurance when a rock shattered my windshield Gieco fixed it no problem but dropped my coverage on the next renewal. I can see why Gieco will never get 100% customer satisfaction.
I got a great deal using GMAC insurance, tell them that you want the "Rider" magazine discount. 1998 VFR 218$/year full coverage.
I got quotes from several places when I decided I was going to by the VFR this winter/spring. I got a quote from Progressive then Geico both very similar in price, EXPENSIVE. I almost decided not to buy a bike after I saw the numbers, worked out to something like $200 dollars a month (similar to what some of you are posting). I called my current insurance company for my cars, house and snowmobiles (State Farm) and they quoted me $44/mo or $528 a year for the same coverage I have on Mustang, $100 deduct. for comp. and collision.
I'm glad I called around.
And I agree with what someone said above, go talk to them. Take the time, will be worth it.
I have....or should i say had...motorcycle LLc. great rate. just got a letter saying they are dropping me because they are no longer writing policys in florida :pissed:
edit.....i just quoted with geico with Loaded coverages i didnt have before.....only 574 a year!
i got mine through progressive for $371 a year. but since i'm so new at this got full coverage with a combined single limit of 500,000 per accident for $1300 or so.
Laney - find a company that'll give you a multi-vehicle discount. My company is for military members only, but I know that State Farm and other companies will give you one. I pay around $1320 for full coverage on a car and a VFR in Monterey. The VFR only added $220 per year.
