VFRs yanked from showrooms

Went Interceptor shopping Saturday here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. No VFRs to be found. The first place I stopped by was pretty hectic and not very helpful. I didn't see any VFRs (new or used) on the showroom floor and after several fruitless attempts to get someone's attention I turned my back and headed to the next dealer on my list. (We are blessed with a number of Honda dealerships within 25 miles of DFW, so I'm quick to axe a non-performer)

Next on my list was Honda West of Ft. Worth. A homely but well-stocked store, gearing more towards the off-road scene. Here is where I learned that Honda had insisted they pull ALL of their 6th generation VFRs off the floor. Not only were they not allowed to sell them until the latest recall had been adressed, they could not have them on the floor....even their used one. Unfortunately, the parts needed to rectify the problem were on back-order until Feb. <_<

Anyone else getting similar stories out there?

I'm kinda bummed because bike shopping is all I have to hold me over for the next few months (just relocated, bought a house etc etc).

Their are no recalls posted on the HRCA web site. Dealer probably did'nt have any and wanted to sell you something else!

I remembered reading the post below, and didn't give it a second thought. Only after being told by the salesman at Honda West that he had to pull the bikes off his floor did I make the connection.

FWIW, the salesman did not try to steer me to another bike, but instead offered his apologies, and asked me to stop by again in 2 weeks, after they get their parts. He also gave me a list of the VFRs (both new and used) that he has in stock...including the milage on the used ones. He just wasn't allowed to put them on the floor.

"American Honda is conducting a SAFETY RECALL on affected models per the VIN
ranges listed on attached table. The recall will inspect the Proportioning
Control Valve (PCV) on vehicles equipped with linked or anti-lock brakes. In
limited circumstances, the existing proportioning valve could develop a leak.
Over time, the leak could result in a total loss of fluid from the rear brake
system. If the motorcycle continues to be used after a leak occurs the rear
brake would eventually become inoperative. In worst case, the loss of rear brake
force may cause a crash."

"The instructions and procedures necessary to repair the affected motorcycles
will be available the week of January 24th... Parts required to perform these
repairs if a leak is found will be available later that same week."

"American Honda will mail a notice of this Recall to owners of all affected
motorcycles."

This affects certain VINs of 2002-2004 GL1800/A's, 2002-2003 CBR1100XX,
2002-2004 VFR800/A's, and 2003-2004 ST1300/A's.

Honda is overly anal when it comes to recalls. When they had the Gold Wing recall for rear subframes we had to pull all our Wings until the inspection had been done. Seems a Winger in Miami hit a pothole the size of West Virginia and broke the subframe and subsequently crashed. Honda put a recall to have all the subframes checked. Same thing with the Silverwing fuel tank recall, a guy in Europe had a leak in the seam of his fuel tank. Honda made the dealers inspect all the fuel tanks before allowing us to sell them.

Honda's stance isn't a bad thing however. Yamaha finally recalled the RoadStar for a transmission problem. The tranny would lock at highway speeds. It only took six people getting killed and a huge letter writing campaign to the NHTSB to get them to recall them.(insert shaking head emitcon here)

Seriously, I've been looking but I don't think a list has been released to the public. I just tried to get on the HRCA site, and it seems American Honda is down for the moment. I'll try again later.

Honda of Plano has a 03 silver abs vfr 1200 miles $8000. Heck if your really interested my wife is on me about getting rid of mine till we get some bills paid off. 03 VFR with 7500 miles I would let go for $6500.00 (well I think I would).

I just bought my red '02 w/ 2200 miles (on Saturday, yippee!! :wheel: ) for $7k. If the dealer knew anything about any recall, he didn't say anything about it. Yours sounds like a good asking price though.

This is what I got from my dealer:

"Chris,

You can expect to see a letter from Honda on that recall any time. Your bike is affected, so we need to inspect ASAP. The problem with certain units is that the linked braking system proportioning valve will develop a leak, losing brake fluid slowly, then, once the fluid is gone, you lose rear brakes. It is a problem that occurs over time, and can be indicated by leaking fluid. The best thing to do is get it here so we can inspect it, (about a half an hour process, which we can do while you wait. Just give us a bit of a heads up before coming in. We can even do it on Saturday if your so inclined.) If you have any questions, let me know.

My '03 that I just bought used came with the recall notice. The guy had it with him when I picked it up. As soon as it's warm enough to ride to the dealership, I'm taking mine in. The letter says, "Our records show that you are the current owner of a 2002-2004 VFR800/A involved in this recall." Apparently the recall covers a couple of years.

Got an Email from the Ex-wife.....that is not the story...

She received my recall notice in the mail from the dealership in Delaware.

I am going to set up an appt with the dealership here in Rapid City, SD to have them look at what they need. They shouldn't charge for the inspection/fix according to the letter.

I don't know exactly the problem. They are talking about a PCV (i thought that was positive crankcase ventilation) Valve that is like a proportioning valve for the linked brakes.

I hope this doesn't become a big issue!! :(
