On the latest brake recall for a possible defective PCV valve in Hondas with linked brake systems, the dealer determined that my '04 ABS (manufactured October '03) required replacement parts. I'm curious to see how many bikes were actually affected. Was your's?
FWIW, I had noticed what looked like brake fluid appearing in small amounts above the shifter on the decal section of the chain guard. Another poster mentioned that there was a connection to the linked brake system above that area, and to have it checked. I'm not sure if that connection is related to the possibly defective PCV issue.
On a side note, the service tech was a bit baffled by the detailed measuring process, because it wasn't immediately apparent how all the initial measurements mattered (some were asked for, then not referred to again). The process was apparently quite intensive, and the parts could not be ordered until after a number of steps were completed.

That area above where you are talking is where the Proportioning valve is located.

Took VTECalicious in today for the recall. All is well in PCV land for me. The dealer I took it to has checked five Gold Wings, one ST, and now my Viffer and is finding no problems. Seem to be a few isolated incidents which is good....except of course if yours is has to be replaced.
Assuming that this poll constitutes a random sample, when do the numbers become statistically significant? Looks like the recall is affecting less than 10% of rides. unsure.gif

Probably later this spring when everybody starts pulling bikes out of storage. I'm able to ride every now and then, but I'm not taking mine in until vacation. In the mean time, I'll just keep a close eye on it for leaks. I can't take off work during the week, and I'm not wasting a Saturday if it's warm enough to ride. wink.gif
I got the notice from Honda (of course, after I called THEM to ask about it).
Funny thing - I don't OWN a 2004 VFR/A, I own the standard version. I'll take it in to be sure, but odd that I get a recall notice with the correct VIN for a model I don't have.

abs nonabs that doesnt matter its for the linked brake part not the abs part
My 03 check ok. The dealer told me they have not had to fix one yet out of all the affected models, but it's still early in the year here. Most bikes are probably still in their winter cocoons.
Took mine in a few weeks ago...no replacement was made. The shop guy said they checked 3 goldwings, 3 st1300's, and 6 vfrs since the recall was made, and none of them have had to have parts yet.
Mine checked out fine today. Tech said that it measured about 22.9mm and may have compressed a few hundredths of a mm after sitting on the scisor jack for 30min. Based on what i understand on how they measure it, it would be hard to repeat to .01mm even if it didn't move at all.
Tenth one they claim to have done with no bad PCVs yet.

its at the rear by the battery where the leak will occur....but its from pressure applied by the front left caliper secondary master cylinder
Not sure if they did or not - but they would not sell the bike to me until they did the recall on it. Nothing looks disturbed but I had to wait a week for parts? huh.gif
my dealer said it's ok, but I don't trust these guys. Here's how it went:
after having the bike for about a minute he came back (the svc mgr) and said "it's fine".
I asked if we could look at the 'instructions" for this (I had already seen them on vfrd, thnx) .
He tells me their honda rep said that if you press the back brake a few times and it's not spongy then it's fine.
I tell him the instructions indicate you have to check the front piston no matters what the back brake does, at least thats the way I read the instructions.
He says "well you want me to do that?"
I say "well I'd feel safer".
So they have the front caliper on a jack for awhile, then come and tell me it's ok...
I have my doubts they did anything but put the jack under it. And it doesn't sound like they did this procedure with any of the ones they've checked so far...
Hope ya'll have better dealers then my local one. H

hehehe that's what I thought. It's crazy, it's just crazy wink.gif I don't know how typical this is, but I hope not alot. I made sure they put the indication on the vin to show they did the recall. I just don't have much confidence in stealerships at all. H
