The Throttlemeister ™ for the VFR is a rather simple install, much simpler than I had anticipated. The instructions are concise however not complete, a few details are not explained. Such as where to put the washers included in the kit, or where the inner adaptor was? It takes a bit of improvising to get it to work when your missing parts too, I should call and get the parts but I want immediate satisfaction, I can make it work right!!

I found the inventory to be incomplete from the parts list in the box.
  • 1 Inner Adapter IA3250 - Assembled on Draw bar
  • 1 "O" ring R-016 - missing
  • 1 Draw Bar DB3250 - included
  • 2 "O" ring R-206 - assembled on Draw bar
  • 1 25mm SHCS S25 (friction sleeve) - included
  • 1 Outer Adapter OA 565 - included
  • 1 Inner Adapter IA1125K - missing
  • 1 Mounting Bolt - included
  • 3 Washer W055 - see below
  • 1 Puller Tool - included
  • 1 Puller Bolt - included
  • 1 on/off decal sheet - missing
I visited Throttlemiesters website for info and found several different sets of TM's for the VFR, brushed finish, polished finish, extra weight, and 2 sets for Heli bar owners (old and new)

http://www.throttlemeister.com

I found the site to be somewhat informative but the same old site they always had, still unsecured, no provisions to order on-line other than an email address and a fax number, 800 number, they urge you not to email Credit Card numbers for security reasons - good advice. In this day and age a secure on-line ordering system is really not too difficult to get running! I mean if I can run VFRD than they can get a secure webcart ordering system by now.

I was up late as usual since I work graveyards and well calling in the middle of the night is not going to work, I am not going to leave a message with credit card info on a freaking machine. Nor email it so I went with another source.

They seemed to have the same prices, cause my local dealer was going to charge retail, make me come in to get it (which I hate - hate driving to that place) so I just ordered it on-line from them. This is their website - I used them once before for the original VFRD picture contest and found them to be OK.

http://www.sporttouringusa.com

It took a couple of weeks as they did not have them in stock, but they did not charge me till they had the item shipped, and sent me notice that was going to be the case - very good communication about order status I like that, then sent it UPS Ground for a reasonable $7 ended up costing $137 all together, and 2 weeks to my door (yea no driving to that damn dealership!) We all know what happens when you drive to the dealership, bike envy sets in, gotta sit on the new R1 or slobber over the KTM dual sport!!! A guy like me cant take that kind of pressure!!

The Set I bought was the Standard brushed style FT & AHR2-----------$130

Like I said before they have different kinds, longer heavier bar ends for added vibration damping, polished, different adapters for heli bars, but basically they are the same for Fuel Injected VFRS and they have them for VFR's built from 1986 to present.

Remove the old bar end weight Throttle side

The old bar end shown with the puller tool and puller bolt

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm05.JPG)
Slipped the puller tool in the slot, and threaded in the bolt

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm06.JPG)
Crank off the puller bolt - you will need a 4mm Allen wrench

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm07.JPG)
When you get it out far enough you have to wiggle it out with your hands

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm08.JPG)
All the pieces removed - that was rather easy!!

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm09.JPG)
Slip on the Friction Sleeve (25mm SHCS as it is in the inventory)

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm10.JPG)
I cut off some of the gel grip end off with a utility knife, where it had a ring cause it stuck out too far. Inserted the draw bar

That left a bit of a gap but I have a universal grip helper that fits over that gap. I have had that thing for years and it helps with the carpal tunnel pain I get from time to time.

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm11.JPG)
Gave the draw bar a few gentle taps with a rubber mallet to get it in there

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm12.JPG)
Inserted the 6mm Allen bolt into the throttle bar end

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm13.JPG)
I tapped the whole assembly in to about 1/8 of the friction sleeve per the instructions then tightened the 6mm Allen bolt to 15 ft/lbs but I also put red lock-tight on the threads.

The thing worked right from the start, no adjusting, as the instructions say you may have to move the draw bar in and out to get the TM to work properly, no binding when disengaged, and when engaged makes good contact. It worked right the first time!!

Washers?? where the hell do you put the washers? I have no idea cause there is no instruction as to where these things go? I suppose they are there to put between the draw bar and the bar end if you tap the draw bar in too far and then cant get it out? To be used as spacers? Beats me, none of the drawings make reference to them, and they are not mentioned in the text? I did not use them! One of the drawing has what looks like could be the washers for the non throttle side but does not label them?

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm16.JPG)
You see my Universal Grip helper covers the gap

Non Throttle - Left Side

OK here I ran into problems as the part was missing the, Inner adapter that was supposed to be included, I figured I could improvise something easy enough which I did by cutting off the end of one of the old Bar ends to get that stepped half moon section to line up.

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm14.JPG)
When parts are missing improvise and adapt - cut off the end of the old bar end

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm15.JPG)
I sanded off the rough cut metal and stuck it in the new bar end it fit alright, good enough! I used the small portion on the left

(IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/throttlemiester/tm17.JPG)
I put some red locktite on the bolt and screw it in nice and tight!

One big question. Do you have to reach over with your left hand and twist the bar end to activate the Throttlemiester?
#3
Well I havent put them in practice yet but they tighten the same direction as the throttle, and it takes a good 1/4 turn to get them to engage - I believe it is a one handed operation but will require some practice. they certainly look a lot better than my old scratched up OEM ones.

Oh when fully engaged they hold tight enough to keep the throttle pinned but not so tight that you cant adjust the throttle as you crest a hill or somthing. I mean if you find you have to roll off you can do it easy enough with it engaged.
#4
I had the same setup on my bike and if you use your pinky and the edge of your hand you can twist is quite easily without letting go of the throttle.

ex. Touch your palm with the tip of your pinky finger. Do that while your hand is covering the TM and the throttle and you can control the TM.

#5
I have the same setup except I put mine on the inside of the grip? Huh wonder if it would be more comfy on the outside?

HS -- thanks for listing the play-by-play, and for removing some of the mystery -- the tm option has moved a bit higher on my wish list. John

Got my Throttlmeister from:Arizona Motorsports

Total cost: $105.30, with vfrd discount September 2003.

Ah the last 3 times I have ordered stuff from AZ I have had to call them to get the whole order? I would get part of it, wait, then wait longer, finally I would call them and then all of sudden it would show up a few days later? I think the order fill guy has narcolepsy or somthing.
#9
i find that i could not afford to spend the 100 dollars or so to get myself a throttlemeister. i found that 3m superglue at 4.99 a bottle liberally applied to the throttle housing keeps the throttle open just as well. you just need to prepare ahead with liberal doses of acetone 5 minutes before you intend to slow. :)

Maybe their service has taken a nose dive. The TM was my one and only purchase from AZ 1.5 years ago

BTW, I got the standard satin finish and polished them to the bright finish, using 320 grit emery cloth followed by "Blue Magic" metal polish. With the help of a long 6 mm cap screw/nut/washer, I could spin the TM with a variable speed drill while using the 320 grit emery and Blue Magic polish. Excellent results.

Yeah, Curt's TM bar ends did come out nicely. I don't know how long it took him to polish them up so nicely, but at least it gave the old man something to do!

I couldn't figure out where the washers were supposed to go either. In addition I think on the left side all I did was pull the old bar end off and put on the TM one. It was last year so I don't remember exactly the procedure. It works great once you get used to it. It's especially nice that you can micro adjust the throttle when the TM is engaged. It makes the long flat rides that much more comfortable.

LOL the Kamakazi method !

I purchased a used throttlemeister on ebay for $40, it is missing the throttle side bar weight. Do you see any reason why the stock bar weight cannot be used over the throttlemeister bar weight? It seems to work fine so far.
Thanks, Rod

Well what holds the stock inner bar weight is that clip that wraps around and sticks a tab through the hole in the handlebar. If thats intact I suppose using the OEM weight could work, but I imagine it might flop around a bit as it is not a precise fit.
