It's hard for me to believe this kind of crap happens in real life but it does and I've seen it on our last trip to Yosemite. Guy with his family in a white mini van with Arkansas plates tries to run one of my friends into a ditch on purpose as he was making a legal pass over the broken double yellows. No possible other reason except to try to be a dick. Luckily no one wrecked but it took the police to keep us from taking matters into our own hands. There were about twenty of us on that ride.
I don't have words except that I'm glad you were lucky enough not to be more seriousley injured. Take it as a sign from the big man. Time to move up into that big new VFR. I'm telling you. If you don't I will. In fact I might even if you do. Way to survive Miquel. :blush:
Now for all you would be hill billy run a bike off the road types out there. This is what happens to hill billy bike haters who mess with my friends.

I went to the emergency room even though I felt no real pain, that 1400 dollor suit is definitly worth its price! I have a muscle strain in my shoulder, groin and thumb but its just minor. the bike has a couple of crushed forks, a crushed left radiator, and the side plastics, the givi wing rack, snapped the radar slider off too. Snapped off a foot peg too - scuffed up the givi bag.
I was not at fault at all, driving 30mph up a hill to town - hillbilly in a van pulls right into me from a double yellow head on, ran me off the road and cliped me knocked the bike right out from under me. Idiot, I layed there cussing then got up when he came over to me ready to punch him in the face but some witnesses stopped me, then the cops were there before I could figure out where all my stuff was! The hit was absorbed by the bike and not me, I rolled around in some gravel and grass and hit on my stomach - short of breath for a few minutes laying on my back wondering wtf just happended, checked out for pain, nothing yet so I got up and started making a fist to hit the guy with. I think I said somthing like
"you alright"?
"I was untill you came over into my lane and hit me, YOU BETTER HAVE INSURANCE"!
If he said no I was going to kill him! but he said he did, some guy offered to be a witness, saw the whole thing and ran up to a cop and told him what he saw. It was completely his fault, he got 3 citations, following too close, wreckless driving (more like wreckfull), and crossing the double yellow causing an accident. Cop said he had insurance, but they carted me away in the ambulance before I could get all that stuff.
I am going to the meet and riding houses bike, then come back to Nashville to settle the insurance issues. Probably fly home and have Kevin fix it till it can be ridden. Come back and ride it home.
well Kevin and I are trailering over to tmac now so thats it so far!
Wow sorry to hear that. I haven't been on here long, but didn't you just finish getting the bike together? Sorry man, glad to hear it didn't go any worse.
Man, glad you are okay. Always enjoy reading your posts. I always hear how the gear can save our asses, we can never have too much. Try to enjoy the remainder of the trip.

Still, I know the feeling all too well of putting tons of time into a bike and then have it all taken away shortly after. Not fun at all. Kudos to you making the best of a bad situation. :+1:

Sounds like you've had an incredibly tough year with your bike. Glad to hear that you're alright.
You're especially fortunate since it was head-on. Take lots of time to heal and make sure the soft tissue injuries are fully healed before doing anything too strenuous.
Lawyers will tell you not to do anything until about 6 months after the accident so that if you have to sue there is no doubt as to where your injuries came from.
I had a sinking feeling when I saw the picture after pulling up vfrd this morning :+1: . Sorry about your rebuild, but I'm very glad you're mostly OK, Miguel.
Haven't met you yet Miguel, but huge prayers and sympathies to you man. I've been reading your posts about painting your old bike and fixing it up just so...maybe not another more personally customized VFR out there. Just so glad you are mostly OK. Be sure to let the docs follow up before you sign any kind of an insurance release. Like others here, we so value your contributions to this group of guys and gals that love the VFR! Heal up and enjoy the get together as much as you can. Hope to meet you at the PCNW meet some day.

Wow!! Glad you are OK too Miguel, and in the end that's all that really matters, as we've all said before the bike can be fixed or replaced, you can't. You did well not punching him, not sure I'd have had the restraint. Good luck with the claim and enjoy the TexasMac.
My two bits: Take it easy this week. Tomorrow you're going to hurt like a suminbiatch and you prolly won't feel yourself for a week or two. Document all injuries (however mild) and economic losses. Be prepared to either deail with the insurance company when you get home OR hire an attorney to give them hell.
Your van driver, HillBillyBob = negligence per se. All you gotta do is prove losses and you're gold.
But, life gets REALLY complicated if you injure yourself while riding this week (can't tell what he did to you versus what he didn't).
Sorry hear the asshats got another one, but it's good to hear you came out of it OK.
There might be something to the "plow the proceeds into letting the board members buy you a 7th gen. You could always keep the old girl and spend some (more) time putting her back the way you'd like her.

I've been sweating about this all arvo as I only saw the photo and couldn't find the thread... so relieved to hear you're A-OK... although tomorrow you're gonna be one sore SOB (but lucky to be alive)... I had to get between a cager and a biker today after the cager backed into the biker's Red-wine VTEC... I figure the driver didn't punch the biker 'cause the latter kept his helmet on (and didn't react) and I jumped in and told him to calm down... only had a little idicator light broken... unfortunately it was the biker's fault, I saw it happen... but no cause for fisticuffs... yours is a different story.
So you've had some good luck within the bad luck there Miguel... take it easy at T-MAC...
What a shame to come all that way from CO to TN and then have such a thing happen. Best wishes hoping that you're able to restore her back to what she was. She's a beauty.

What a shitty thing to have happen, but glad to hear OK. Take comfort in the fact that statistically, you are no more (or less) likely than the rest of us to have another one, rider skills etc. assumed to be more or less equal. With annoying regularity, I see Harley riders in shorts and flip flops not covering their front brake (hell, not even USING his front brake) in traffic and generally riding like loud pipes make them invincible. Although I would not wish an OFF on anyone, I have to confess that my charitable nature has limits and I often end up thinking that somebody has to fill up those statistics - better that guy than a VFRD'er!
My perception by your original post you were riding up a hill 30 mph strightline, you see oncoming vehicle and all of a sudden when he gets close to you, he crosses double yellow and plows into you?

Gill - my friend, coworker and general rabble rouser. As to the poll, and your prospects, get the 7th Gen, I'll back you with a Jackson.
As everyone said (and as I told you this weekend at the event) I'm glad you're OK, Miguel. Sucks about your VFR or course, but it sounds like it could have been much worse for you.
As for what to do now, I'd say either buy a used 6th gen. w/OEM bags or do the 7th gen. thing and add the luggage later. You seem to do a lot of long days and trips, so I think a bit more touring oriented VFR would be a good option. Plus there are tons of mods for 6th gen's now, so it wouldn't take long to customize it.
Oh man.... Werry glad your OK, but man you just got the bike together after hard work and now this...Maby a sign, get a nother bike????

I don't think it'll be that easy to swing a 7th gen, if you wanted one, that is. Even with the VFRD pledge and a fair return on the 5th gen, you'll probably still need another 5/6k for a decently kitted 7th gen.
I'd like to see that 5th gen put back together frankenviffer style. Hopefully they don't total it.

Looking at it on Kevins lift, shes got a busted flat header in front. I pulled off the left front fairing and the header stud fell out, its snapped right off with the engine threads still on it. Front forks are bent way back and snapped the right side tube like a pop and fresh roll of cookie dough. Oil leaked out all over. The rear seems un harmed since the givi wing rack took all the hit back there, it however did not make out in the accident it broke off both sides. The front brake lines stretched and are about to snap off too. All the fairings took damage, the left side split into 3 pieces. Tank has a big dent on top and a scratch on the side too.
I pulled off all my accessories and put them in a box to mail home. The staintune is in good condition, the ohilins shock is good, the scott oil filter is good. My f3 fork tops though are shot, race tech springs I dont know probably bent. The Racetech gold valves we will try to salvage.
I decided not to fix the bike, its got way too many miles and 4 times it has been down, time for a new bike. I left the bike just took a lot of pics for the insurance before I started in on it and removed the accessories.
I will give vfrd first crack at my stuff that I am willing to sell, the ebay the stuff that nobody wants. Still waiting for the insurance people to contact me after filing a claim. I also talked with a lawyer, I think I may have dislocated my hip too since it still hurts to walk I am glad I did not ride anymore after the weekend, its gotten worse.
Tommorow I fly home and get back into the routine of things, I am glad I went to the tmac anyway, and thanks to everybody who offered help. House, KKEN, Terminex, LDSRIDER, and many many more I sure I am forgetting. I appreciate all of you, and the members of vfrd very much for all the well wishes.
Sorry about that, but as seb said, you're doing the right thing. As for everything in life, it is just an opportunity! In your case, to get a new bike! :blink:

Prove it! That is all I got to say? The 1200 Guzzles fuel and eats tires? prove it? Come on now you dont own one and are regurgitateing what some rag reporter says he gets. It is not your own personal experience. So prove what the average rider will get! The guys I met from the TMAC area that ride there all the time they all get maybe 1300 miles out of a sport tire and 2300 out of a sport touring tire on a vfr 800 vtec, thats not typical I am sure they would say the same thing about an 800 that your saying about the 1200! Double the general running cost in fuel and tires alone? Get one and keep meticulous records and maybe then you can say that with some authority.

After it brakes in, a trip or two and you get in the rhythm of the new bike one of many questions I have is how is it with the 4.9 gal fuel tank? I now it wont be a problem but I want to here your thoughts on it. And no more chain, clean wheel and no adjusting!!! :bliss:

After sustaining a fair amount of front end damage on my 4gen years ago and rebuilding it ,I wouldn't go that route again as it's always more time and money than you think it will be once you start taking her apart,so I think your making a wise decision,especially since you got so many miles out of her.
Don't remember if I committed to the 1200 fund but if you go that way,I'll throw in $25 clams.
Insurance + VFRD fund + a good discount from a connection, and you might be able to ride a 1200 out for no OOP $(and maybe a uncrashed 5 Gen to boot!)

Yes and I had to get myself under control since I am sure one of these people are gonna be packing a gun! I did that to a guy who lives a few blocks away from me after he failed to stop at a stop sign 400 yards from my driveway and forced me to the curb since I obviously was not there! No stop, No yield, No bike I guess is why he did it I suppose? He noticed me when I turned at his turn, and the next turn, and then stopped at his house right behind him.
I told him,
"there was a stop sign back there..a guy like me on a bike could get killed easily when you do things like that!"
Then I rode off on my piggy, and stopped at a 7-11 to get a few items (my original destination) still agitated and hopped up on adrenalin waiting for the guy in front of me to pay for his gas, he had a gun in a holster on his right hip. It really made me think, if this was the guy I did that too, would I have gotten shot? So now I just toss a finger and ride off, I don't chase people down anymore cause I would rather live to ride another day, and just ride like people are out to kill me, knowing they are going to do something stupid and riding cautiously avoids most to the 80% percent of stuff you can actually avoid.
The Centerville incident happened so fast I had only one option - ride off the road or get hit head on, and the guy still managed to give me a whack strong enough to rip the top bag off the wing-rack, mounting plate and all, and fold my forks under. I am just glad the bike took the hit and not my body.
Have you guys ever had any exp with H-light modulators? In the short time and rides since my install I've noticed a huge difference in being seen. Still won't take it for granted and "defense" is the word.
Modulators should be standard equipment on bikes!!
It's quickly becoming one of the best mod for the bucks item.
