So yeah....I had my rear tire explode today at about 80 miles per hour on the freeway tonight. I thought I was goin down, my rear jumped around so eratically. I managed to limp my bike off the freeway to find myself in an industrial area with no pay phones around to be found. I ended walking who knows how many miles to find a payphone when finally a lady called AAA for me (I don't have a cell, but I'm getting one after this).
I couldn't believe it...a motocop passed right by me and slowed down to see me pushing my bike and didn't stop to help. I had my hazards on and all. I was pretty ticked off. :pissed:
Anywho...three hours later I arrived safely at home to post here, but holy crap that was a scare.

Must have done the Euro model mod to get the hazards. Sucks that a motor cop would ride right by. Also curious on the tire issue. Do you buy internet tires?

04 models have flashers. Figgah good job in saving the bike. I had the same thing happen on my VTX a couple of years back. I was running about 85 on the interstate and had a passenger. Pucker factor was high and I wondered when I would finally get all the seat out of my ass. :blink:
I have had a few nails in my time, but never a blowout. I just noticed that the bike was steering a little heavy, looked down, and saw a flat. Glad you saved it. Please let us know what caused the problem, tire make, model, milage, etc. :thumbsup:
does anybody else use SLIME .my dealer put some in last wek .Ihad it also in my last vfr with no noticable handling difference.no punctures or at worst a slower deflation. well saved FiGGaH !!!

Glad to hear you're OK, but you should have waved a donut at the cop, then he would have stopped for sure! Did you notice what kind of cop bike he was riding? Must have been a Harley or a BMW. That could explain it too! :P
Thanks guys. =] Sorry, I didn't get any pictures of it as I had the rim went to the dealer before I had a chance. Theres only a slight scratch on the rim which surprised me.
* Tire: Metzler Sportec Z6 * Mileage: 3k approximately (All commuting, plenty of tread left) * Cause: I dunno, but there is one large hole (it's actually circular, about the size of a sharpie??? The other puncture was about an inch away from the hole. It was about .75 inches long. What really gets me is that I don't know what I ran over. I was just passing somebody and checking my rear view mirror when it happened, but I didn't feel a big bump or anything. I don't remember a bump, but I guess it could have been part of why my rear tire initially jumped so erratically. My tire lost pressure instantaneously.
I have no idea what could have caused such strange puncture patterns. *shrug*

I used Slime on my earlier bikes with some success, but I think Slime works best for sealing small punctures that come from staples or nails. In this case, his tire seemed to have had a catastrophic structural failure and exploded with a big gash. The slime would have just added a spectacular spray of green to the incident.

If you ever change a tire with SLIME in it... you'll never use it again... it's a mess and a half...

You could have caught a stray bullet... I think the tire should be analyzed carefully by someone at Metzeler...
Sounds like you had fun. Look at it this way... At least you can get to 80mph on the freeway. So much traffic here you're lucky make it past 60 for a minute or so. Vegas is packed...

I've been super busy with a new job out in Ontario. Once I learn the systems it'll slow down a good bit. With the messed up roads from all the rain, I've also been reluctant to ride. I don't care for the slip sliding on dirt and all that. :P
The more I hear about mishaps with metzlers, the less inclined I am to risk my a$$ with them.

I didn't lose confidence in the Z6 due to the mishap I had. I don't know that the Z6 handled the mishap any differently than any other tire would have. Maybe, I dunno. I lost confience in the Z6 because my Bridgestone 020 felt better than the Z6 to me.
I was going to replace my Z6 with a Pirelli Diablo just for kicks, but the dealership didn't have any, and I need shoes right away as I commute on my bike. I ended up getting the BT014. It's not the best commuting tire, but I know that I'll be riding in the twisties soon and it will be nice to have the extra stick. That and I just wanted to try something new. :D Next I'll maybe go with the Pirelli Diablo depending on how long this rear lasts me. My commute is almost half of what it used to be, so it should last a bit longer.

What are those slits from? That is really strange.
At first, (first slit), we thought maybe he ran over something. We were far from home, and weren't in a position to do much about it, so we filled it with rubber cement, crossed our fingers, and rode easy. Then the others come. We figured it might be a manufacturing flaw, but...........

Pirelli's sound like the ticket.
I have the Z4's with about 1900 miles on the the front and half that on the rear (rear got nail in it at 900 miles and was replaced). I have not experienced any weird slits in the tires, although I will watch for them. Metzeler is owned by Pirelli (or visa versa), so they possibly use similar manufacturing and design techniques. The Diablo is a nice tire, although looks very similar to the Z6. I wonder if there is any major difference between the two.
