In may I have to move to New York, and am trying to figure out the best way to get my stuff there. I don't own a car, just my VFR, I have Givi bags, but they won't hold everything.
Right now my options are: Rent a U-Haul. I can fit everything in there, but the prices I've seen from the Uhaul site are ~$1000 for the smallest one.
Rent a car, rent a trailer. Might be cheaper, still gotta deal with getting the bike up (inside a trailer?)
Get a friend to take my stuff up, Ride my bike.
Start shipping stuff now (I have friends who are there now), ride my bike.
Anyone have any other ideas? I'm trying to save $ on this move.
Sorry you have to move up north. I lived in Conn growing up and I would prefere to live in the south now. And you were so close too. Renting a uhaul, small truck should not be $1000. I have moved close to a dozen times (military) and never paid more than $500 one way and that was for a biggest Ryder truck they have.
Grew up in NY. Much prefer the south for many reasons. If you are military----most military bases have a uhaul concession thru the mwr facility-lots cheaper. Even if you're not military--adam18 is right, i've made a bunch of uhaul moves for under under 500 bucks.
Hmm... I just looked at Uhaul's site, and not sure how u ended up with $1000, Unless you're moving to Buffalo. My experience has been the following:
Budget Penske Uhaul Ryder (In NY Ryder seems to mostly do commercial short-term leasing)
Rates are far more expensive on the weekend, and especially at the end or beginning of the month. This is when people usually move, if you want to save money, move when nobody moves. Tuesday in the middle of the month.
From what I gleamed, going to NYC from Charleston would be about $500 for a 15'. Only save like fifty bucks for the 10'.
I was surprised how little fits in one of those big trucks. When I was in college I moved with a 15' Budget truck, and I filled the thing to capacity, no moto, and I lived in a 700 sq ft. studio, granted I didn't stack very high, but that requires some serious straping down.
I know with Budget, they have some 15' trucks with hydraulic lifts, but you have to specifically call and ask, otherwise a ~3ft ramp. From what I remember it would be scary driving a moto up that ramp, but it could be done. The back end is way too high to straight lift her in, unless you can clean and jerk 600 lbs.

Just came off the Bridgeport ferry, empty, make a right to go to I-95. Gun it, and the back end comes hopping around making noise.
:o Silly me, there's frequently a cop right around that turn since they built the Bridgeport AA baseball stadium. He was cool, told him I forgot it's not loaded down, and he let me go. :thumbsup:
And judging by avatar, your still in the military and they should pay some thing to move. See your moving office, every branch of the military has one of these.
I could have stayed here but chose to go to New York, I've gotten sick of Charleston. Mostly I don't like the humidity, the lack of decent roads (last weekend I rode on-ramps for fun for ~2 hrs), and the lack of intelligent, attractive, nice women (I have another way to say this but I'll refrain).
It's only until november so I figure that I should be able to ride most of the time.
I don't have that much stuff (my 3 Givi bags and my tv are the largest bulky items I own, no bed, no sheets, no chair.
I'll have to check into deals from MWR and check out how much I'll get to move (I know its at least a grand, but thats even for the people staying in charleston, so I figure that I should get more than that. Any money I can save will just go to my pocket.
I'm fairly limited on the dates I can move, I have from may 13 to 31 to get up there, but am planning on a sailing trip in the bahamas for a week.
