Sorry for the late notice all. It's that time of year again, the Fall Catskills ride is back! We have a new location and new lodging this year!

Please post in this thread if you know you are coming for sure or think you might be coming.

----------------------------------------------------------

Due to the unfortunate decline of the motel we used in the past, we have selected a new location that shows promise.

Here is the hotel info: (ask for the VFRD group rate, Confirmation #2454, I set this up with a guy named Brian)

87 Motel

403 Main Street (Route 299)

New Paltz, NY 12561

Information: 845-255-9220

Reservations: 1-800-879-8787

http://www.87motel.com/index.html

***Room rates are a bit higher than last year.

Friday night = $70.98 + tax.

Saturday night = $103.38 + tax

Total for both nights, tax included, = $191.80

-24hr cancellation policy-

***You must call in your reservation and mention the confirmation code listed above to get the discounted price!***

***Smoking & Non-Smoking available***

***All the rooms are the same price(king bed and double beds available)***

Cold continental breakfast is included, as are towels, toiletries, pillows, blankets, etc.

Some notes about this motel:

- it is located directly off the Thruway(I-87)

- all rooms were renovated this spring, about 6 months ago

- I am copycatting this location from a ride that some guys on CB1100F.net held this spring, and they were satisfied with the place

- there is a decent restaurant and a gas station within easy walking distance (200ft!)

- it is close to some good area roads

-----------------------------------------------------------

Not only is this thread good for counting heads, but it would be a good way to get together with someone to share a room.

Thanks!

Here is the info for the diner next door. I will be in contact with them soon to work out a group price for breakfast & dinners.

Of course, there are other options as well, New Paltz is a pretty good size town. This place seems good and is only 200ft from the motel! :fing02:

Due to Hurricane Irene, many of the roads in the general vicinity of our previous rides have suffered damages. This area is (as I type this) suffering from the effects of another storm and after 4 days of steady rain we are experiencing more flooding.

THE SHOW WILL GO ON!

As a result of all this, we are compiling new routes that include the same type of roads you all keep coming back for, year after year. We have shifted the entire ride south to avoid the worst of the damage.

Ultimately, I will not be able to post routes and gps tracks prior to the event. I will try my best. As always, I will be requesting volunteers to cover some lead and sweep duties - this year these kind folks may carry the extra responsibility of leading their groups with printed turn-by-turn directions.

I apologize for the somber tone this post might convey, I think the weather may finally be getting to me... but have no fear! VFR people are the best people, and we always manage to have a great time!! I look forward to seeing lots of faces both new and old!! :fing02:

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback Travis. I'll be calling there to find out why that is, that's not what I had worked out with him. I won't be able to call until later this afternoon, but I will post up what I find out.

I recommend you grab a beer and prepare to call several times to get someone on the line, then speak slowly and be patient, and you just might get a room. :fing02:

Say, Seb, did you inquire about a fire pit? Beverages in the parking lot, and other such sundries?

They have a "BBQ stand", whatever that means... they are cool with parking lot bevvies, not sure what they'll say if we make our own fire pit...

For those of you that are trailering in, if you could bring some lawn chairs that would be great. I don't think this place has chairs outside like the Franklin does.

I was out on a slightly modified (from last year) Catskills loop today. We may have to avoid a couple of roads because Irene washed a few bridges away,

but I hit 250 miles of clean road and had a great ride :fing02: . Also took a quick tour of the 87 Motel parking lot...........things were clean and quiet on a

Saturday morning.

#29

Brian and Seb speak the truth as the progress of the clean-up is moving right along at a quick pace.I live about 10 miles from Motel 87 and ride all the roads Seb will probably map out .I went out Friday for my first ride since before Irene and most roads are in good condition. Some sand and gravel in corners that were rivers a couple of weeks ago,but overall better than I expected so don't miss out if you can get/plead for a hall pass from your better half.

I'm working that weekend but could meet up with you Brian and give you some lawn chairs and figure out how to get them back later.

Also anyone who can't make it this weekend ,I'll be around through mid Oct so I can show anyone the "good stuff" if I'm available.I freelance so I'm available weekdays and weekends depending on the week.A friend is coming Oct 10-13 and we'll be riding those three days, colors should be peak.We may go to Ontario, stay local,or New England.Depends on weather, our mood,or direction of the wind.

The Genesis is a convenient distance to the motel but New Paltz offers a lot of great food choices that are walking distance to the motel or a short cab ride. You could also go to the end of main street and walk back to hotel pub crawling on the way, theres about 10 of em"Some of my favs,..

Guilded Otter-Brews made on site  , good gastro pub, outside seating with heaters and eye candy aint bad either  ,..

Harvest Cafe-High deck facing the Gunks ,great food, service and wine list.

Gadeletos-Great fish/seafood and I grew up in New England FWIW

Pizza place in Gadeltos plaza-Cant remember the name, back off the road a couple doors down from Gadaletos(Not Pasquale's) I lived in Italy for a while and grew up with mostly homemade pizza and this is pretty damm close,...

Enjoy!

#36

anybody know the WiFi and coffee status at this yankey motor lodge?

#37

Wifi - yes

Ok Seb. And as to the avalability of the whores?????

 miss a TexMac... miss a lot.

#40

I think the rooms had mini coffee pots.......I'll double check. The diner and gas/minimart are 100yds away, good pubs and restaurants

are within 1 mile........everything we'll need is close! Is anyone planning on local riding on Friday or Sunday? One day just isn't enough

to hit some of the better roads here.

#41

Might be able to pull off some Sunday morning riding...

Any status on FIRE?

#42

I plan to roll in sometime Friday late morning, me on the bike & wifey w/ the car so we don't have to pack & load the bags. Might head south to meet up with northbound arrivals (Timmy?) and make a leisurely run back to the motel. Likewise I could head north the fun way on Sunday with anyone who's heading north in search of twisties.

#43

As of right now, the Atlanta trio are planning on leaving Wednesday morning and missing as much slab as possible. Looks to add about 300 miles to a 900 mile trip but you never when you may get the chance to ride that stretch again...sure as hell don't want to do it on the interstate.

If it works out we could be there Thursday night but more likely Friday before lunch and could be persuaded to ride some other roads.

#44

Is this a "Leave the mesh at home and pack the heated liners" time of year?

Help a brotha out, and remember I'm a native Floridiot!

#45

Typical temperatures for early October would be mid 60's during the day and 45 - 50 overnight. You should be safe

leaving the mesh at home. Expect very cool temps when we leave in the morning...........it will warm up in the valley near

the motel, but stays fairly cool in the mountains. In other words.........make sure your heated grips are working before

coming north..........and pack your hoodie for the nightly beer sampling.

#46

Had some troubles this past weekend with the MOTY starting my RC51 in cool morning weather. That'll be a fun experiment for the ride!

Yessiree, what he said. The lower temps are the price you pay for the wonderful sights and smells of fall here.

If I can figure out how to make the gps files, you're welcome to them... unless you want to volunteer to create them? :491:

I'm going to lead the Intermediate Fast, maybe have you and Brian tackle the Intermediate and switch up duties as you wish, and then there's the Scenic group which Tom usually heads up.

Seb, If you can get the routes mapped I'd really like to have them so I can load my Zumo...unfortunately I am technically challenged and have to rely on others to do the actual mapping... unless you don't mind unexpected "detours" thru the woods sans roads & trails!

#60
twitte

Hey Twitte, email me at stevelynn.peterson@gmail.com, I'll give you my cell number and see if we can't meet and ride up together... anyone else?... will be leaving Wilmington DE around 11am (Fri)... will be linking up at a rest stop with at least one friend in northern NJ around 1 or 1:30... join us if you can... sounds like Twitte even knows where we're going... has a map and everything

As far as my riding style...almost 50 and not the rider I used to be (used to ride a lot with some great friends, we played rugby and some club hockey at Illinois...won the Mid-American Cup one year, but then got married, stopped riding and became boring as hell)... gave up riding when kids were little...getting back into it... just bought the VFR this year...have an adventure bike also, because I really enjoy touring/hiking/camping which I do with my brother about once a year...can't find anyone else interested...groups I ride with locally are all Harley people (or metric equivalents thereof)...not very exciting but really nice people, and we ride to really nice locations--good meals, good people, good fun. It is a little frustrating riding with Harley's though... constantly holding back on the throttle...dyno'd a brand new Harley with the optional horsepower upgrade and it didn't even make 75 hp at the rear wheel... My VFR dyno'd almost 170 (with Akrapovic and PC-V)...think most Harleys are under 60 hp... back roads are fun for me, because I can pass traffic like it's standing still... the groups I ride with can't pass a semi on a back road, so they just lumber along with that annoyingly loud exhaust ... did I mention they pull over every 30 minutes to wait up for the stragglers... (on one 6 hour ride, we averaged less than 20 mph when adding time in the saddle and dividing by distance)... that's when I decided to get the VFR and see about finding other riding groups ... I'm hoping this group might save me. Parents live in Asheville NC and my job takes me to Blacksburg VA, so I am out that way often enough... hope to meet up with some of you guys in the Blue Ridge Mtns one day... don't worry about me... I can keep up..

#61

We don't want anyone to "keep up", we try to group people with similar riding styles and paces so that everyone has a lot of fun.

#62

Steve, I think you've been saved!

This is a great group to ride with but do remember that NO ONE needs to "keep up". We're all about riding within our limits. No one here will ever bust you for not keeping up... I feel I'm a decent rider, no track experience but pretty comfy in the twisties. There are MANY guys (and probably gals!) here that can ride circles around me but I have never felt any pressure to "keep up". I know where my limits are and remember every time I ride that I need to go home safely.

I'm sure you will be quite happy riding with VFRD!

I'm prolly be arriving Friday night and leaving either Sat night or early Sunday morning. That will depend on the amount of 'fun' Saturday night.

I'm still trying to work out a few kinks to be able to make it this year. Is it okay if I'm a last minute addition?

Pat,

We're really hoping it works out and you can join us! Joe & I will gladly share our room... I don't think they have rooms with 3 beds but they did say they had "air bed" avail if we needed... that is unless Joe doesn't mind you spoonin' with him... then in that case you won't need the "air bed"! Your call! :laughing6-hehe:

And ya, what's with the Canadian connection?

Any word from Poncho, Tumbles & crew or DDO-VFR? It just won't be the same, eh?

#68

If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the Eh-Team.

(I'd link to the video, but can't figure out this new forum software).

Take off eh...

I can't commit either way until next week. Life sometimes gets in the way of my riding! At this point it is still 50/50. Good weather (dry) will definitely make it hard to stay home (tires are approaching end of life, so riding in seriously wet weather will be dubious).

BTW, last year I plotted out Seb's routes into Garmin .gdb format. If it helps, I can do it again, but I haven't noticed anything posted on this thread. If it isn't already done and somebody PM's me a route (google or whatever) I'll give a go again.

Hello??? Teach a brother to fish. How do I link to video (and can I link to photobucket video)?

#74

Jim, quote my video post and insert your video link in place of mine, then edit your text. You should be able to figure it out then...

Brian

Ah ha! Thanks for spurring my memory Brian! Look for a PM from me tomorrow!

Really need to learn how to do that myself at some point.

#77

Can you post the link code?

It better be good after all this hype... :goofy:

Hear hear! or is that here here! I really need to learn how... I've downloaded gpsbabel but just waiting for Seb's PM to jack it into a garmin file....

#80

Did we forget to tell CornerCarver there's a new board? :idea3: He's been awfully quiet lately...

My upcoming schedule pretty much means this is the last day for bike prep before the ride, so new tires and oil going on and in today! See ya in a week, or so. :tour:

#81

I have been out of town for the past week and am heading back out again this sunday....returning Tuesday night and on the road Wednesday am...MiniCarver will have to mow the neighbors lawn to get his tires mounted at this late date...they aren't even arriving until Monday or Tuesday....

any GPS files avialable. I know the route is open to revision due to the storms and road conditions...

#82

I haven't seen a PM yet, Keith.

#83

Travis, you and Brian have PM.

I can do his tires Tuesday afternoon as a last resort. Or Sat if he wants Power front and rear (I have an unmounted set in the garage)

You got my number...

#85

Thanks KevCarver....it may have to work that way.

We were working on getting his heated grips wired up today and the connector from the stator to the reg/rect has one very brown wire.

We will be cutting it out tomorrow and chacking other stuff before I head to Dallas on Sunday.

Once the gps routes are sorted, I will distribute them via PM on a per-request basis.

I was going to wash my bike, but it's going to rain for a few days so I think I'll just leave her outside for a bit...

Seb, I would like to get the route files when you get them... .gdb for Garmin preferred but will take what's available & do my best to convert. Unless someone else can do so easily & send it to me...

And today's weather reminded me of the torrential downpours Jack, Joe & I rode out to this ride in last fall! Hoping that this year it's a drier ride out!

Excellent - we're talking slabin' it from here to there, then? It's about 4.5 hours from my AO to New Paltz going I83-I81-I78-I287-I87. If you roll in to the Ettoh around 0700 and with gas, smoke and food stops, that's just about a 1230 - 1300 ETA. You wanna see about meeting up with North Jersey contingency and backroad the last 1/3 of the ride?

May have a couple guys riding with us, too - PainterBob and a buddy who live about 20 miles from here.

#90

After talking with Timmy, I think that's the opposite of what he wants to do - he was telling me about his plan of meandering up here with no set route or time, and just wanting to avoid toll roads/interstate.

Looks good, Timmy. We'll have to figure out where/when to meet up. It'd be easy-peasy if you shot up I-83. The ride would pick back up on that map around Bethlehem/Easton. It's about the same mileage/time. But, if ya gotta go that route for some reason, we can meet up there (Bethlehem/Easton) for chow/break/smoke and run. NBD.

PhatPat33I'm still trying to work out a few kinks to be able to make it this year. Is it okay if I'm a last minute addition?

Same here.

I'm prolly be arriving Friday night and leaving either Sat night or early Sunday morning. That will depend on the amount of 'fun' Saturday night.

I'm sure we can fit both of you in somewhere. Pat, any football games you'd like to put a beer wager on before the weekend?

#115

I had originally replied that I was going to try to make this ride. Well, to keep a long story very short - I lost in my attempt.

That weekend has me triple booked - and all at events that I'd rather miss. TMAC this year was fantastic to be with all you clowns, and I really wanted to be a part of this one.

If there is a miracle - I could swing showing up for Saturday night - only to leave first thing Sunday - but that would be sufficient to reconnect with you hooligans. FIngers are crossed - but it doesn't look good for me to get to the ride. ENjoy yourselves - and I hope TIMMY makes another movie or 12 to document the trip!

Big thanks to Seb and Brian for making this happen!

I got home just before 11:30am, made a quick run up the slab to get back. Had just enough time to roll the bike in the garage and unload the car before heading back out to pick up the boy from grandma's.

Please post up your pics and stories and general thoughts about the weekend here in this thread: http://www.vfrdiscus...-home-safe-too/

Made it to Harrisonburg, VA. Circumstances conspired against us making our goal of Bristol or Johnson City tonight. We'll give it a go on the morrow.
Tire lost about 2-3 psi at the most over the day. I'll check it out in the morning.
