The OEM wheel weights are the type that clip onto the center ridge of the wheel. It looks to me like using these weights repeatedly will scratch the wheel, as they are held in place by spring tension on metal tangs which dig into the wheel.

Stick-on weights avoid this problem, but they cannot be centered on the wheel. Is this a concern for getting a good balance?

The dealer will be changing the tires, and I think I'd be better off with the stick-on weights if for no other reason than to avoid some ham-fisted type prying off the OEM-installed weights and scratching the wheels. So, I should take the OEM weights off myself before taking the wheels to the dealer, and tell them to use stick-on weights. Yes?

Not an earth-shattering issue, I know, but opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I Would :-)

I have stick ons since I replaced the tires from the factory and they're fine. Just see if the dealer can out them up next to the spoke (if possible) so they're mostly out of view.

Curt,

Yes, the clip-on weights will leave scratches on the center ridge of the wheel. Mine are scratched not from the dealer removing the weights, but from the actual spring tension digging into the center ridge.

If you want some stick-on weights to bring to the dealer, I have a TON (more than I'll ever need). Feel free to give me a call and we'll figure out how to get them to you.

I just reuse what was on there before. I remove the old double sided tape, and install new double sided tape. I also use the clip on type, but they do scratch the rim.

If you're not doing them yourself, yes remove them ahead of time. Stick on left or right has no effect on balance. They are all I use. Tip; if they are silver weights, use a majic marker to color.

That's a good tip - I've got to remember that one!
