VFR Discussion Group -> Electrical Problem

Here�s the deal. I rode about twenty miles out to Barbers� Track Sat AM. I put the sidestand down, engine off, turned the key to the off position. Problem: all lights remained on (headlight , tail dash ). No amount of playing with the key worked. I figures I had a bad switch and better get home before the lights ran the battery down. It was a little hard to start and , after it did, I tried to kill it with the key but no doing. I rode 20 miles home and decided to check it out with the voltmeter before disconnecting the battery to kill the lights. This time it was really hard to start. After it started, I was getting about 12.4 at idle. I revved it to almost 6000 and couldn�t get it to reach 13 volts. I do this drill a lot and usually I would be seeing well over 14.

Now I�m thinking RR; although I don�t see any way the switch problem can be caused by a bad RR. Since I just got a spare RR last week I decided to try it. I wanted to make sure they sent me the right one anyway. I disconnected the Neg lead from the battery and before messing with the RR reconnected it to see if the lights came back on. They did NOT . I started the bike and it was putting out the correct voltage. Key works fine.

I�ve checked all the threads on RR problems; and haven�t seen this problem. I a little hesitant to head to the Gap Friday. Any advice would be appreciated.

2000 VFR with almost 16,000 miles - NO problems of any kind prior.

A voltage regulator cannot have an effect on whether you can turn off your bike. These two issues are unrelated.

The order of the day:

1) Check all wiring, and all connections, and all switches, and all relays, and all light sockets: repair-replace as needed.

2) Clean all connections-connectors, light sockets, switches, etc with Caig Deoxit http://www.caig.com/

3) Replace RR

4) Replace battery

Do I want the 100% solution or the 5% of DeoxIT? I think most people must buy the 5%. I moved this to the electrical forum, I think.

Yellow might be the root cause, but at least it goes faster when it works. :lol:

Your ROOT problem is you're a dumbaxe! And , instead of degrading my beautiful yeller bike, you better come up with a fix unless Birmingham is on your way home from the GAP.
