PAIR Valve Removal on a VTEC

PAIR valves are the same on the fifth generation VFR, so it should apply there as well.

PAIR (Pulsed Air Induction Reed) valves are an emissions control device that takes clean air from the airbox and injects it into the exhaust tract of the engine, on the backside of the exhaust valve. The main idea is that when an engine is running rich for whatever reason, particularly when you back off the throttle, the exhaust gas will have unburned fuel and no oxygen. Fuel vapors are nominally worse pollutants than combustion byproducts, so putting fresh air into the exhaust while its still hot will cause the fuel to combust inside the pipes rather than be released into the atmosphere as-is. It also keeps the catalytic converter warm so it works better.

Anyway, the wierd knocking noise you get sometimes when pressure suddenly rises in the airbox compared to the exhaust pressure is caused by these things. Your engine runs slightly more efficiently without it (how much I have no idea), but it also just sounds better.

Here's the stuff you remove in block diagram form:

The blue area highlights the solenoid control valve for the PAIR system. Its attached to the back of the airbox and has three large air hoses and one four-element electrical wire attached to it.

The red crosses indicate where we're removing the hoses from. One is the input to PAIR from the airbox, on the left rear corner of the airbox. Two of them supply air to the PAIR valves themselves on the valve covers.

To get to everything, you'll need to remove the airbox from the velocity stacks as if you were performing a starter valve sync. If you don't know how to do that, follow the Starter Valve sync How-To located here:

After you've lifted the bottom half of the airbox, start the mod by removing the PAIR hoses from the engine and airbox. Don't mistake the aft PAIR hose for the crankcase breather! (Its output is on the right rear corner of the airbox.) Then disconnect the PAIR solenoid control wire, and remove the solenoid and hoses as one piece. The solenoid "hangs" on the airbox and doesn't have any screws holding it in place, so you can just pull it off.

Since we're taking the hoses off, we need to cap the PAIR ports somehow. Several ways to do this...you can machine a cover to replace the one that's there, you can remove the cover and fill the port with JB Weld, or you can put a $2 rubber cap over it. I'm lazy so I picked the latter method. Here's what it looks like on the front side:

I used 5/8 inch rubber bypass caps from NAPA, P/N: 660-1696, and zip tied them around the base to keep them airtight.

To plug the airbox outlet, I used a 1/2 inch bypass cap from NAPA, P/N 660-1697, and pushed it in from the outside.

Last step is to put everything back together. Without the PAIR hose running to the front cylinders, its at least a little easier to set the airbox in place! After doing this mod the annoying knocking noise of the reed valves was gone, and the engine was slightly smoother. Of course, that's just an opinion, and I also did a starter valve sync at the same time.

Next step is evap canister removal...

I know I could be wrong on this one and I think it has been addressed in this recent discussion about the pair valve, but I think all you have to do to disable the system is remove the electrical connector to the solenoid. The solenoid opens to allow air box air to flow into the heads and if you stop that from happening, the pair valve's effects are disabled.

The next time I have things apart on my 5th gen, I will measure the voltage to the coil of the solenoid and see if it is open or closed when the key is turned on. If no voltage is applied until the EFI calls for operation, when it senses the need, then all that should be needed to do is remove the voltage source.

According to the manual, air flow to the cylinder heads is blocked until the solenoid is activated.

This is how I perceive the operation and as formerly stated, it could be not be 100% correct but without testing, it is the way I see the valve as working. ???????????

Ya that would be great if you could do that for us. I didnt think to do that and after haveing the top end open four times yesterday I'm to lazy to do it again! huh.gif Disabling the valve wire should be an acceptable result and that's what I did initialy. We only pulled the plumbing to simplify things under the hood and save a little wieght. Fixer sure put a lot of work in this stuff for us and here's one for him beer.gif

What I suspect is that PAIR is deactivated at the solenoid whenever EFI goes into closed loop, since PAIR would most likely interfere with the O2 sensor readings. Beyond that I also didn't want to experiment to see if it failed open or closed, as you're discussing.

Its really too easy to just pull the whole thing and cleans up the area around the airbox a little bit. Three caps, no screws, totally reversible if California were to mandate some kind of bike inspection... wink.gif

when it aplies voltage will really say nothing as to whether the valve is open or not. what we need in addition to that is whether it is normally open or normally closed when power is applied... or blow on the tubes when voltage is applied... that'll let ya know if it is open or not!!!

The manual states that air should not flow between ports "A" and "B" on the valve. The "A" port holds the air tube that goes to the air box and the "B" ports are the two ports on the valve that go to the cylinder heads.

To test the valve, you apply voltage to the coil and blow into the "A" port. Air should then flow out the "B" ports. So it seems that the valve is normally closed when NO power is applied because no air should flow when there is no voltage applied. The valve is closed.

The question remains, "is power applied with the key which opens the valve and then does the EFI close it when it deems it should or does the EFI apply the power to open the valve when it feels the need? Testing to follow.

On my VTEC, the PAIR solenoid valve is open when there is no voltage. By that I mean the plunger is down allowing an open path from "A" (airbox connector) to "B." Apply 12 volts and the plunger will move up, closing this path. On the bike, the valve is open (no voltage) at idle. If I rev the engine, the valve will close (12 volts) momentarily if I chop the throttle.

I've been troubleshooting an afterfire condition at idle which disappears when I manually close A.

Is there any concern that removal of the PAIR valves will foul the catalyst? I don't mind reducing it's effectiveness a bit for improved driveability, but if it's on there I don't want to toast it.

Are you refering to the catalyst that you're eventually going to bust up with a screwdriver and shake out the back of the headers? Is that the catalyst to which you refer? tongue.gif

I put on Staintunes last fall, the decelleration popping has been driving me nuts ever since. Last night I deplumbed the pair valve as stated above only I left the valve plugged in, just no hoses and voila' no more popping. WooHooooooo!!!!! The bike is smooth as glass on the decel now.

I am not sure that it is a fact that the EFI on our goes into close loop mode. I believe it is combination of Speed density (uses the map sensor at rpm) for drivibility and Alpha n system (for acceleration) - uses thorttle position sensor (TPS) or Alpha and engine speed or n that regulates the fuel delivery and ignition timing. Close loop would happen only when cruising at the same speed, which is quite rare on our bike, but I might be wrong.

Where in the world do you get leaded gas? I thought they quit selling that stuff years ago!
I'd be careful with that leaded gas because it will kill your cat, but it will plug it up in the process.



I run a cup of leaded racefuel every other tank, This is my first cat bike but the but prior history with other bikes, the race fuel keeps the fuel system clean and gives some valve protection.

Yes hopefully it doesnt plug it up , if it does I'll have to bust a hole in it I guess.

I've seen aticles on the lead doesnt necessarily plug them up, it just coats the chemicals and reduces their effectivness.

I'd like to see the empirical evidence from this scientific study you've done...i.e. "keeps the fuel system clean and gives some valve protection".

Hey shipfixer, Thanks for the great write up and pics. I am doing mine and bought the 5/8 caps with the same part #you have. Howerver they are way too small. I will get the next size up tomorrow. I wonder why the difference. Just thought I would share that and thanks again.

I was going to go out and buy some bypass caps today... How many, and what sizes do I need? I have a 2004 VFR (non-ABS).

I don't get it.

I plugged the PAIR hoses yesterday (used a cut-up ski retaining rubber doofer), then put them back on, just as a temporary measure while I assessed what difference it makes. The main thing I noticed was that the idle had dropped by about 300 rpm.
What I don't get is why it makes any difference at all, as all that you're doing is stopping some fresh air flowing into the zorst pipes AFTER the engine. How does that affect the way the engine runs? And what advantage is there apart from removing some noise and weight (if you remove the hoses, reed valves, solenoid, etc)?
The other thing is, if you don't have the O2 sensors disabled (I do), won't disabling the PAIR systme mean that the ECU will go, "Oooh! Lookitdat! There's a shortage of o2 in the zorsts - let's lean the mixture out some more!" , when in Closed Loop mode?

Someone explain.
I've done the mod, just because I could comp13.gif and to see what happened. 491.gif
But I can't see how the mod is any advantage.

gets rid of backfiring on deceleration with the throttle closed, and gets rid of the annoying "thwak" sound when opening or closing the throttle.

My bike doesn't do that (before or after the mod).

It *must* have some other effect, surely? If not, why does it alter the idle?

I thought the bike ran hotter this morning, but can't verify that.

Whelp, on the way home last night (before the bike fell over while I was motocrossing...) I thought that the enjun seemed to be running a bit better/smoother, particularly when cold. Normally, if I give it any throttle before it's totally warmed up, it's a bit spluttery and hesitant, but that's definitely gone.
Aside from that, and a tendency to fall over for a rest on grass verges, I dunno what PAIR incapacitation does. Yet.
But I will check it out some more.

When I ride again.
