Replace bad wheel bearings I have been getting my bike ready for riding season, I had a warped front brake disk and it tore up one of my wheel bearings from all the rattling when I used the brakes. I don't know if the disk warped first or the other way around. I just had a day of bike maintenance today, new chain, new tires, new bearings, new front disk, new pads.

You can tell your bearings are bad if you can move them back and forth or in or out, they should spin but not float around inside there.
Remove the brake disks 6mm hex 6 bolts. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings02.jpg)
I pried out the oil seals with a large flat screwdriver, then pushed a rod thru the inside and made contact with the outer bearing and hammered it out. You have to move the rod around so you don't get the bearing twisted up. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings03.jpg)
They were in bad shape that spacer needs to go back in, cleaned it up and greased it. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings04.jpg)

My bearing hammer heads, I use the threaded rod to compress the bearings into the slot first. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings08.jpg)
Make sure the bearing hammer is big enough to catch the outsides but not too big it wont fit. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings09.jpg)
The hammers have a handle on them you can attach and then bang the bearings in the rest of the way. I don't hammer them in right off the bat to keep them in strait and not damage them. (IMG:http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/uploads/bearings/bearings11.jpg)
I managed to rip away the inner race and bearings on one side leaving the outer race in the hub. Since the hub covers the back side of the outer race it is not possible to hammer it out from behind. Anyone have any suggestions? Would the Honda tools be able to remove it?

Sorry but no you have made the job much harder, the tool is a collet slide hammer type puller & since you have riped out 20mm inside bearing race, she no work.
You have really only 1 option to get that outer race out & that is small grinder (like dremel tool) & carefully grind away race till nearly through in two places & it will come out (don't rush be very carefull & it will be fine). You can't lever out because you will damage wheel hub & it is press fit so you have no chance. Heat is not a good idea with alloy wheel. Collet puller larger size if aval will try to expand outer race that your trying to remove.

Kind of what i figured. Spent a few hours last night with a dremel and cut off wheel - still a long way to go.
I'd better change my front wheelbearing as soon as possible. Can anyone give me the dimensions of the tool that is used in the pictures above...so I can make my own tool to compress the bearings.
The bike is a 1997 VFR and I need the inner and outer diameter of the outer bearing-ring and also the inner diameter of the inner bearing-ring.
If someone also have the bearing-number so I can order new ones from www.skf.se then I would be very happy!
the pocket your bearing is in is not structral to the rest of the hub. i would drill two small holes through the back from the other side and than increase size to a quality 1/8"-3/16" drift and knock it out. honda gets $23 each for the bearings, but any bearing supply house has them under $10 each. at that price i can buy them individually or by the truck load! i changed mine even though they felt like new cause' i was changing the rotors and was right there. ONCE AGAIN HS HAS BROUGHT YOU GOOD INFO ON A "HOW TO"

You really don't need to go to all that trouble. Just get yourself some metal stock just smaller in diameter than the bearing. Lightly seat the bearing then place the metal stock on top and being tapping it in with a hammer. Takes only minutes to get the whole job done.

OK I'll try that. Have two more questions though! :unsure:
1/ When removing the old bearings I have to hammer it out with a rod. Is it very important only to hammer on the outer bearing-ring? I mean it dosen?t seems to be much place in there for me to hit the outer bearing-ring while the "distans bar" is in place. Or is there a way to budge/move the "distans bar" somehow so I will get the space needed?
2/ I have found some cheaper bearings now (cheaper then Honda org.). These new one I will buy are dust-sealed on both sides. I wonder if there is any need to replace the dust/oil-seelings, that now are covering the bad wheelbearings, with new ones? Or will these new sealed bearings be enough so I can use my old dust/oil-seelings on the outside???

you should be able to push the distance bar to the side and get your punch on the bearing just fine.

A bearing puller/installer is a pretty common item. I bet if you asked the local parts house they may have one for rent. You could also ask the local shop if they can replace the bearing if you brought in the wheel.
As for cost of bearings, check with an Industrial supply house, something like Munnell and Sherril (SP?). Everytown has a buisness that caters to industry. In the past I have purchased items and saved plenty of cash.
They want to know the bearing size so take your old one with you. They could care less about make and model, but if you have the ID and OD they can find many many options.
Great Write up Miguel, I've been feeling a shimmy under heavy braking, so maybe it is time to look at my wheel bearings.

The easiest and quickest way to now get that outer race removed is to weld a bit of flatbar inside the race. Then you can hit the flatbar with the same drift you used before. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/beer.gif) Dave

Or order a pair from All Balls for $15.57 which comes with the seals as well.
