WOW! what a difference!!! The bike sounds much meaner than before! I took the snorkel out and I also drilled out the plastic rivets that hold the plastic flap. Of course the air valve thing is gone too. To all those thinking about doing this mod.....DO IT!! You'll be happy, and if you don't like it, you can always put the crap back on.

Here's a quick rundown of the noticed advantages:

-Sounds much better, has a BLUB-BLUB-BLUB sound now
-My low speed hesitation is drastically reduced
-More HP!?

While I was at it I also replaced the stock fender with a fender eliminator.

Next is the Buell peg mod....ahhhh the sickness wheel.gif

You have any pictures of the MOD?

I'll post 'em when I get a chance...

I have to agree that this simple, free, and completely reversible mod has greatly increased my riding pleasure.
Dr. Weasel, check out AuburnVFR's gallery for pics of a modded airbox.
The next step must be to disable (or remove) the PAIR valve in order to maintain the rumble through acceleration/deceleration and eliminate the "tok" sound.

P.S. AuburnVFR's airbox still retains the snorkel on the front right. I elected to remove mine which is also a very simple operation. It's pliable enough to just pull through the opening. The only drawback I've experienced is an increase in the appearance of Daddy-longleg spiders atop my filter. rolleyes.gif

Here's mine on a 5th gen. Should be similar on a VTEC:

yup, thats it! just put a bolt in the tube for the Pair valve with a zip tie...and your ready to rock!

I'm fairly certain that you meant to say "in the tube for the Flapper valve" as the PAIR valve has several hoses and requires that the outlets at the bottom of the airbox also be plugged. I haven't yet performed this part of the un-emissions mod but there are some valuable posts on the forum regarding "how-to."
Veefer800canuck, I've got a pal with an '01 who is entertaining the idea of de-flapping/de-snorkeling. Does this mod effect 5th gens as significantly as 6th gens? I assume it would but you know the whole "ASS-outa-U-and-ME" deal. wacko.gif

Yup that's what I meant... wink.gif so the pair valve is for emissions? Similar to an EGR valve? Whats involved in the "un-emissions mod"?

Yea, from what I understand, the PAIR valve allows fresh air from the box to be piped into the exhaust immediatly after the combustion chamber (seems kinda like cheatin' to me). I think this is as far as I'm going with my ride as far as "un-emissions" go. I guess the extent of the un-emissions mod would involve removing the flapper valve, PAIR valve, and O2 sensors (my budget won't yet allow the latter). Some folks are adapting their 6th gen rides with pre-cat 5th gen exhaust systems but, judging from this forum, that appears to often result in performance complications

Have you already done the Pair valves? I want to try it out this winter and would like to check yours out since you are close by. My flapper has been disabled, and the exhaust gutted, I would also like to go ahead and remove the snorkel, pairs, evap cannister, and install the O2 eliminators I have had laying around.

Haven't yet done the PAIR valve surgery. I'm performing an oil change Friday and plan to at least disconnect the electrical plug (I think it's in a rubber boot below the oil cooler). I'm also gonna look at what removing the evap canister will involve while the fairings are off (I'll search the topic first).
I'm anxious to hear your ride's gutted exhausts. I would imagine the new note overpowers the difference resulting from de-flapperization. I hope to get a little ride in this weekend. My 5th gen pal from Salisbury will be probably interested (just turned 45,000 mi. on bike he bought new!). Drop me a line if you're free and we can meet up. BTW, we had a new member (jev) come on board from Clemmons a couple of weeks ago.

Hey does anybody know what that noise is at low RPMs with the flapper valve gone? It sounds like another valve moving in/out...

I want the "TOK" to go away but I don't want to make this too complicated. I'll look in the service manual again, but I'm in over my head. I fitted a KN filter and as you guys already know I have a "TOK" noise that comes and goes. I'm getting used the low speed hesitation, but is the noise harmful or will it just drive me crazy.

05 VFR, Dunlop 208s and the KN thing.... 2500 miles - oh god now that's a laugh...

Well, I didn't dyno the bike before and after, so I have no hard evidence.

All I can say for sure is it sounds WICKAD! wheel.gif

I dynoed 100.6HP with the airbox opened up, but no "before" figure, sorry.

It certainly doesn't 'feel' slower at any rev range.

Tell your buddy to try removing the snorkel for awhile and if he hates the noise he can always go back. If he likes it, then he can de-flapper it later on.

Hey ProMed, have you sanded your cans yet? blink.gif Sorry, I hope you don't think I'm getting too personal. goofy.gif

Not yet, will probably give it a shot once work slows down a little now that it is getting colder. I would like to see a few close up pics of the new finish on the guards of the '06 VFR. Will probably just use a scoth-brite pad and work my way down to a very fine grit. It works great on the aluminum frame of my CR250 dirtbike.

Before you eliminate the O2s, you might want to check out this thread on Turbo City's fuel pressure regulator mod: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.p...60&#entry179774
