Didn't Bubba Shobert die in a house fire a few years ago ?? I remember watching him race , god was he great at tearing up the tracks...

He ran into a rider that had stopped to do a burnout (before that was common) and suffered brain damage. This was about the time that he was switching to 500GP. I haven't heard about a fire, but he's been off the radar since his brain injury and it may not have been widely reported.

Has anyone seen the RC30 that's up on Ebay right now?

Where and when did that accident happen? I remember watching a motorcycle race when I was a kid of someone stopping and doing a burnout after winning a race and getting wiped out by someone hitting him. I wonder if that was the race I saw.

Sweet bike, but seems kinda fishy. If you know that you have a $15k bike, how are you going to wreck the plastics unloading it from a van???? However very nice to look at, dig the rothmans paint.

I believe Bubba is still alive and well... the guy he ran into was Kevin Magee. He was managing 250GP teams for a while... not sure if he doing that anymore or not.

OT, but it kinda shakes you when the careers of some great bikes get wiped out or snuffed by one accident. Bubba wa such a rising star when it happened to him. Ohter notables that got "eliminated" were Russel (track accident, rear ended during a yellow flag), Nagai (freak accident when the Ducati in fron ot f=him blew up and spilled oil on the track. his bike low sided but got caught on the edge of the track. it flipped on to his head when it landed), Kato (his still largely unexplained high speed crash into the barriers), Rainey (his world championship ending crash into the kitty litter that snapped his neck), Joey Dunlop (His Estonia race crash that happened on hi retirement season that killed the poor guy.)
Sadly, motorcycling still seems to have much more tragic incidents compared to a lot of other motorsports.

Very much still alive. I got his autograph at the USGP last year. smile.gif

The rider who was killed in the fire was Ricky Graham, Bubba's Honda dirttrack teammate in the late 70s / early 80s.

Ricky went ot the same high school as I, and struggled to balance his personal life and racing career. He spent a number of years in rehab for addictions, and seemed to be on the way back in the mid-90s.

Ricky dabbled in roadracing, but never seemed to make the transition as had Roberts, Lawson, Rainey and Chandler. When he was "on", though, Ricky was a master of dirt ovals.

Ricky Graham died in a house fire at his place in Salinas in January, 1998.

I love the '86 AMA 750s; they're the "top dogs" from when I began riding.

Which is original? The pic posted above has a double sided swingarm...the one on e-bay has a single side. Sorry I know they are wicked fast and I lust the lines...but I am not that schooled on the RC30...perhaps I shall google.

The bike pic'ed above is an '86 VFR750, and the RC30 is a separate bike model (although blood related to the VFR).

The other guys are correct, IIRC. MaGee, however, didn't win and was doing his burnout in frustration. Shobert finished well considering he was on an older NSR-500, not the top tier stuff. Shobert was waving to the spectators on the cool down lap. He had no clue that MaGee had stopped in front of him in the middle of the track.

Thank youy for the info... Sorry about the mix up....Yes i used to watch ricky graham race also ... Was he the HONDA rider that blew by the harley riders on the flat tracks and the Duqoin Mile in the early 80's....???

Hell yeah, on RS750s, speaking of really cool '86 750s...

It's really cool when manufacturers other than freakin Harley can hold their own in the Grand Nationals. Honda did pretty well back then, Suzuki is currently doing great with Jake Johnson and Kevin Varnes, and Yamaha should be making a pretty solid entry into that class with JR Schnabel on the Vision- based machine.

In a twist of fate Magee suffered a brain injury in the same year that ended his racing career. Magee recovered eventually but never had a factory ride again. Karma!!

Mike Hailwood - was killed when going to pick up some takeaways for dinner.
Mind you, he'd pretty much retired from bike racing by then.

Russell got hit from behind on the grid right at the start, not during a yellow. Might have been a restart, but it was on the grid.
From what I heard Magee struggled for years with guilt over the accident. Eddie Lawson was riding right next to Bubba still at a pretty good pace; I think near 100 is what I read. Eddie saw Magee at the very last second and managed to avoid him but Bubba never saw him. I read an interview with Eddie and he said that it bothers him when he's at races and people are mobbing him while he's standing right next to Bubba and no one has a clue who he is.
I think Rainey won the race, and I read that if someone mentions that race to him, the only thing he thinks of is the accident. It was also the beginning of the decline of the first era of gp racing at laguna seca. It's popularity waned from then on.

Some of the worst moto crashes I've ever seen have happened at Laguna:

WSB when in Race 1 Chandler's ZX-7R took out Yanagawa in the Corkscrew

Then Race 2 of the same round saw 5 riders down in a startline crash

Doohan's heartbreaking crash when his leg injury was just starting to come good

Speaking of Yanagawa, his crash, roll and burn effort with the ZX-7R is still one of the all-time greats, thankfully he was not hurt in that one!
