This year, Le Tour de France will start from Utrecht and will pass through my "backyard".

Along the route, preparations are underway

Need to do some work on/underneath the tank so decided to see how far she'd run until she stop....

Reserve came on around 220km, and came to a complete stop at

314km

Had s small fuel canister with me so rode to the nearest station

That's a big reserve. Very handy to know that.

The last 4 liters on reserve I was VERY conservative. On average I got 18km on 1 liter

Once fresh DOT 5.1 was in , I realized I forgot to clean the little window...

took a Q-tip, started cleaning the little glass but then a cloud appeared....

the left bottom was black as well so I carefully cleaned things and flushed a lot of clean fluid (the bottle is open anyway...) through the system.

Put on a new vacuum line from carb to petcock.

The petcock on OFF doesnot stop the flow of fuel; I have a revision kit, but then the racing started and afterwards took the VF out for a 100 miles spin over some dykes. :cool:

oh no!!!! OIL QUESTON!!! :goofy:

PO told me the last few oil changes (while he owned the bike) have been with 100% synthetic 10-40W (Shell X7 or something).

Whereas some say not to do this as it will dissolve the build up from prior use with semi-synthetic too quickly. I get that.

But since the last 2-3 changes were done with full synth, what is wisdom?

A) continue with 100% synthetic: it is better oil for high revving engines; any dirt build up will have been removed during the -at least- 3x times full synth was used

B) no, go back to semi-synth as the engine was build in 1986 and it will like this oil better

The bike does like revving and I like revving it (after it is well warmed up of course), it has done 44,000km/27.5k miles.

In summer, we can get 30C/85F days..

The manual says change oil every 8,000 miles; that seems long no?

I was historically using dino oil (non synth or combined) on my first VFR, on '01. I called someone, I cannot remember exactly who, that I considered an expert and was told I could switch from dino to synth and back at will. No harm done.

On the 8,000 mi oil change interval subject, that same '01 got irregular oil changes at 5,000 to 8,000 mi with one at ~10,000. When she was KIA at 105,000 mi. I had taken a sample of her last oil change and post crash sent it to Blackstone Labs to have the oil analysed. That oil had about 4500 mi. on it. The analysis report (in my gallery) said the oil has slightly more metals than their standard measurement oil which was 2,900 mi. The difference they attributed to the extra miles on my oil compared to the standard 2900 mi. oil. They concluded that given the high mileage on my bike, the sample was better than average implying my oil change routine was fine. The comments concluded "Nice bike!"

BTW: your new machine is fabulous.

As long as it's a decent oil I doubt it will make much difference. I change mine (10w40) every 3K miles which is probably ridiculously excessive but it's a fragile engine so it can't hurt. My engine does get very hot and the fan kicks in a lot in slow moving traffic even when ambient is around 10degC. Maybe a 20w50 might work better in the summer as long as you let it warm up OK.

You've gotten your hands on two sweet ones in just a few months time and you get the full fairing to boot!

Dutchy, they are mild steel, prone to corrosion. The only company that makes a system for this bike that I could find was Predator Exhausts in the UK, they do a full system. Not sure if you can get originals anymore, they will just rust out again :(

Yes is does, but getting fresh oil in is a bit more work.

My shop manual has a procedure but it requires a press to compress the shock.

The thin black is battery breather, the one whit a black cap is engine breather/waste pipe, and yes you can, as should let the water/oil mix out of there, just yurn the blug whit a canister below. The other big go to the coolant system.

Inspecting the fuel tap, I realised that fitting the vacuum hose to the little fuel drain is not clever....

It also found that the repair kit "fits vf500f2" will not.

It is way smaller..

The new smaller diaphram is very flat whereas the oem one is is a "hat" shape. No holes or tears.

So is this one eol or is this normal?

According to the manual, there should be a small siff/filter inside but it is not there. There was a tiny bit of crap inside the cap that is screwed on at the bottom.

Worth getting one or adding an inline fuel filter?

The petcock is the achilles heel on this bike. There us a bix box headed your way with a rebuildable one in it.

Use fosforic acid for removing rust. Works better. The working part in coke is strongly diluted fosforic acid. The stuff is sold in Holland as Rustyco.

The pH (acidity) of Coca-Cola is about the same as white vinegar or citric acid in lemon juice ~2.2 - 2.4... as VFRBert said it is dilute phosphoric acid. Acid reverses (technically, it's called reduction) the oxidation of the metal that results in "rust". Use something made for the task of rust removal like he suggests or try the vinegar... you won't have the sugar, caramel, flavorings, etc. to deal with like you would with Coke.

One thing I learned last night is that with the rear shock +3mm in length, I need to adjust the headlight aim up a bit........

That double piston rear brake caliper sure grips fine, to the point of locking up the rear (or I should slow down a bit at night???)

Thats a importan thing to do, as a to low adjusted headlight gives a short light range, spechally on low beam.

I recall the VF500 headlight had a supricing good light pattern adjsted correct, did ride 6 hours+ in the dark going north in Sweden early May.

Ok could be a bit brighter, but still good, far better than I tought it would be.

Today she got a "cup fuel filter". As per the fiche, 1986 model no longer had them but I want one!

There is no room/space to fit an inline filter under the t[image: IMAG28061.jpg]ank.

I had also sourced new tank decals on Ebay (plug here for Ebay seller hielorojo who gave excellent service and his prices much better than a UK seller -with silly shipping charges-) since both had faded.

Armed with youtube knowledge, heat gun, plastic scraper, WD40, kerosine, lampenolie I started removing them.

Well, that proved not as easy but he who perseveres, wins!

Ok not quite... the old warning decals had what appeared air bubbles but upon removing the sticker, it looks like the sticker got somehow "etched" in the paint. After trying every trick I very very carefully scraped the surface and the paint came off.

So I ended up degreasing the surface and put the new decals on.

It looks much much better than before, but not "factory new". But then again, The Netherlands is no Japan![image: labels.jpg]

Nice work Dutchy.. Allthough I have a different mindset... All I need is an oil light and a RPM dial (and a really big RPM dial if possible).

But I like the style.. Was afraid it wouldn't fit the space, Think there is marginal any room left between the cowl and the back of the dials, but I am glad it worked out..

How are the steering stem bearings holding out.. Still no play, or did you have to readjust them ??

Btw, until now I used to own 1 bike only, I have never had anyone else ride redslut for more than a short spin. But last night a visitor from South Africa put her through her paces. Jason a Blackbird/R1200S kinda guy so we attacked the dikes with vigor! The Akrapovic sounds even better following it..

Unless you install cartridge emulators, there is not much around to improve the old damperrod fork.

The only thing, whitout cartige emulators, is to play arround whit diffrent brands of fork oil to get the one that performs as close as you like. One brands 10w is slightly diffrent to a other barands 10w I have noticed, and some brand have a broder range of viscositets, like Motorex that have 2,5w, 5w, 7,5w, 15w as a multi grade 10w30 , where many just have 5w, 10w and 15w in there range

The problem with thick oil is whilst it improves the damping, it reacts badly over harsh bumps. I fitted ReaceTech emulators to mine & they were excellent. Rather than remove the dampers & enlarge the damping holes, as per their advice on installation, I fitted them as they came on minimum setting & used 5w oil. They also add 20mm of preload which is great.

Hidden from view by the lower cowl, it shoudl be ok in this spot. One of the FIAMMs on redslut is close to the header too with no ill effect.

Unless you install cartridge emulators, there is not much around to improve the old damperrod fork.

Do I simply take out the springs, drop in the emulator, put spring on top and button up?

Or do I have to take the forks apart and drill/machine something?

My 4th gen has rods attached to the stanchion caps that slide inside a hollow rod (that is screwed ont othe cap)

My VF500F2 has none of this; caps have and air valve and once I take the springs out, I pretty much have empty stanchions (with as per the parts fiche) soem parts at the bottowm

Your take off from a stop would be tougher but top speed would increase. See if thi helps at all...

Top speed would theoretically increase. In reality it wouldn't because the VF500F was never able to redline in top gear on level ground, even with the stock sprocket. With that in mind, you'd be hurting performance in every gear and RPM.

That's just going by my experience 25 years ago. My college roommate owned a 1984 model and I owned a 1986 model. You might get a little better fuel mileage if the RPM drop isn't enough to lug the engine at cruising speed.

Well your launch would be harder, but your top speed would NOT increase, drag stops the bike accelerating before gearing does !

A bigger rear sprocket would increase your acceleration rate & the right one might allow a minor increase in top speed at the red line in top. But you have to weigh up the extra revs at all times, verses the extra fuel burn & do you need it ?

Run the numbers via gearing commander.

Yeah that bargain price for the set looks wholly unattractive with this knowledge!

Check the battery fluid levels.. If the battery gets a bit low on level, it might get up in that range.. Not to worry, not as long it gets in the 14.5+ range..

Oh I am not worried with the voltage, that idles at 12+ with lights on and heated gloves.

The thing is all years had a 15T front sprocket, not a 16T, and the US Interceptor versions had the rear sprockets you say, but the European model (or ROW) had 84-> mid 85 43T rear and mid>85->86 had a 41T rear sprocket. that according to JTsprockets.com. Mine had a 43T rear and have to say I would not had mind a 41T on the ride home from Dutch ground. And as strong mine did pull in low rpm, I would not mind to test one If I still had the bike... But look what size you have now, and how you like it and if you like it, stick whit the gearing you have. The 120/90 rear tire you have will also have same effect as one tooth minus on your rear sprocket, as it has a larger OD than the stock 110/90. Mine had a 120/90 also rear on the ride home, did change it for a 120/80 that is recomended size for the stock 2,75 rim.

If you have a 16T front now, a 15/41 will be slightly lower than a 16/43...so faster acceralation

Yesterday did a 200km trip on narrow dike roads on redslut. Liked that route so much I pretty much did the same route on puma.

The rear is still looking very good indeed, with measure thread depth next.

Front is a different matter, it wears much quicker,

Apart from the wear in the centre, stroking it counter roatation-wise I feel the edges in the pattern "stick up".

She rides ok (was out yesterday for a couple of hours of twisty dikes) but I reckon the 30yr old suspension has something to do with the edges wearing in that manner.

Well that front tire wear is called cuping, and very common on the the BT45 front. Your shoot head bearing might have made it worse, but your front suspension I think not, well if whit to thick oil in there it might.

You still have a selection of a Metzeler Lasertec or a Pirelli Sport Demon if you like to test some other rubber up front, Both OK, have tested them.

I recall I did use 2 front tires before a rear on my old RC24 also....

Nice stories, Leon. I'd almost forgotten I used to have a VF500 (1985). My mufflers rusted out too, so I had some custom stainless steel ones made; the only stipulation I had was "to make them a little louder". They sounded great - loud enough to emphasise it was a V4, without being obnoxious or attracting the wrong sort of attention. My VF had problems with the inside of the tank rusting; even though I cleaned and treated it (with 'Kreem", IIRC), it had one annoying pinhol leak that never went away. Should have had it brazed, I guess.

The decals for both my girls came in today :-)

Undecided on which color scheme would look best I simply made "3 generations"....

I won't be taking the case of each time I stop so am thinking of a semi-permanent method.

Givi sell -for their own line of cases- a LED system that contains a flug one fits to the bottom of the case and the base plate so it "clicks" into place.

Dutchy, I´m afraid it looks like the front sprocket axle seal is leaking..... Can be the outer or the o-ring that sits betwen a collar (inside the sprocker) and the axle. Might be good whit just a clean and a now o-ring, worst case its a engine split to fix.

But look at the head valve covers if they have also been leaking, becorse of cold temps... the last pic of collector box looks like engine is wet all back part.

You know older laidies might have problems whit small uncontrolled leaks :wink:

Time to clean it up and sell, it was fun while it lasted...

The glistering wetness all over is condensation inside the garden shed, only redslut is parked in a heated garage....

If there is a break in the weather AND my work schedule, I will take puma out, remove the mufflers, front headers and collector box to give her a good clean underneath and hopefully trace "the source".

There was but still is a lot of grime underneath.

Having put a new rear shock in a sourced RT front fork emulators and springs, I'm not ready yet to consider letting her go.... In the few months I had her, put ~ 4,500km's on her, I like her a lot...

Known suspect for an oil leak is the clutch pushrod seal.. Unlike the VF750, 1000 and 1100, this seal originaly can only be replaced by pulling the engine.

Other option is to dremel the outer ridge of the engine case off and then pull the seal. Installing the seal back with an O ring will do. On mine I made an extra lip on the sprocket cover that prevents that same seal from running out of the engine case.

I have that seal in stock..

Other known leaks if it isn't oil based. Is the waterpump..

The Dutchy gave me a tip to pull the rod and put shrink tubing (the stuff you heat up) over the rod area where the seal would be. Tried that, but it kept leaking. So I put another bit of tubing on top and reassembled once more. But then the rain started. So I will try tomorrow if there is dry spell.

Made myself a nice gin and tonic and call it a day.

If it keeps leaking oil, there is only one option: Replace that seal...

It looks like a normale seal on the parts fiches, so why is pulling the engine necessary ?

If you take a look at the pushrod and seal pictures posted by Dutchy, you can see a ridge holding the seal in place..

So the seal is placed from the inside of the engine.

On the VF750F/1000F and 1000R the final drive has a cover that can be removed to replace the oil seal from the inside.

The VF500 series don't have that cover. To replace the seal from the inside, you have to split the engine case.

Another option is to cut that ridge holding the seal away using a dremel. Than the seal can be pulled from the outside, and a new one can be installed using some RTV or other sealant to keep it in place. On my 500F I made an extension on the sprocket cover to keep that seal in place.

So far, so good. The engine ran for about ten minutes, pulled the clutch a few times. And no leakage.

You think you could find a seal and put it on the current one whit some sealant around? Did that on my VW Golf gearbox change shaft that did leak even it got a new seal becorse of a worn shift axel. Did work on that VW gearbox at least..........

Once the weather improves, actual riding will tell how good this fix is. Have to wait till 1st March anyway.

The clutch rod oil leak fix seems to be holding and I do like the RT emulators initial feel. Roads too cold for any serious pushing, but less dive yet planted feel for now. I fear the new lights might hit the fork lowers, the orginal turn signal holders did so on my as other got slightly bent just...so if paint come off the fork lower just below the seals, and you hear a sharp snapp as you brake, you know what the problem is...

I will have a closer look in the morning, raise them if needed!

A kind member from a Dutch forum gave me some chemical&heat resistant shrink-tubing to try and stem the leak on the clutch rod after the regular stuff clearly failed.

But nope, still leaking............ So Satruday it will be Dremel Time!

What can I say, I'm a man of few words, and even fewer thoughts...

Joking aside, this shield is close to perfection for me. It is well put together, and this design is very good, to the point of not interfering with the airflow that goes over the helmet. I do not notice any difference when I switch from this shield and the clear OEM one that came with the helmet for night riding. It is sometimes a tad harder to lock it in place, but it's not bad. I really like the design which puts the tinted visor outside and keeps the structural integrity of the lid itself. I think it is very smart, and god knows that in case the unlikely event of a front-end collision, I will use all the structural strength and integrity I can get. 

The only beef I have with it, and I have with other shields as well, is that it does not fully close and lock on my Arai. But I suspect, because I have the same issue with other shields, that it is because the plastic rim around the basket is about 2mm off and the locking groove just does match the visor's. I should try and fix it myself. 

In any case, I recommend this shield, I think it is an excellent one.

Yes they refuse to put a visor inside as they believe it compromises their design/technical philosophy

so they come up with "Pro-Shade" for some of their helmets (not the ones with the new VAS visor yet), the sunvisor is clamped on top of the regular visor

Can't help but think that this will increase wind noise for sure.  If anyone here can tell us otherwise.... :-)

It also allows them to remain SNELL certified. As far as I am aware there is no helmet that has an internal sun visor that also has a SNELL certification. Not only is having an external sun shade keep you from having to redesign your helmet, it can allow for other helmets to be retro fitted as well.

Yup. Makes total sense to me to not mock about with that designation. Means the world to that company I'm sure. 

Did I mention that this visor makes for a pretty good ice breaker to start conversations with total strangers too?? Hopefully, it may get lady riders to start talking to us too... just saying.

Currently all modular and helmets with internal sun shades will not have a SNELL rating. Regarding your ill fitting CL-17, it would appear that the helmet is either the wrong size for you or the wrong shape. I would go to an MC shop and have someone help you get a helmet fitted properly.

Whether you choose a full face or modular is up to you. For me there are only two modulars that I have tried and felt worthy of buying, one I actually own. These are the Schuberth C3 (now C3-Pro) and the other is the Shoei Neo-tech. The Schuberth, for me, is my favaorite and is what I own but the Shoei is a very close second. Both helmets will run you a decent amount of $ but IMO the fit and finish of both these helmets is top notch. From my experience the liner shape of the HJC is close to Shoei but only it shape, not in fit and feel. If that makes sense.

Well, it all started last May, with an invite to ride biatch with Mamola on the GP16 2-seater.

snag was, weight limit (with regular dress) = 90 kilo.  Ooops I was 96 in the buff..

6 weeks later though, I did make the "grade" and was feeling good in a smaller set of leathers...

Nice leathers Leon!!! I still fit my 48 leathers and use the sliders even I dont slide them in the road. They where usefull as I did hit a deer back in 2012! So now you only need one more thing....come spring and warm sun !

This is awesome Leon. Looking good in those leathers.  I was wondering what your secret was, and now we know: ETFH!!!   Hahaha. I might try that myself and loose a wee bit too. No doubt it will make a difference when you ride too, since there is less weight to throw around, especially on Puma. You will notice for sure. 

BTW, what happened to the high-viz approach you had with the old helmet? Will you add a high-viz vest of some sort to these leathers?

I really liked the ABBA stands, especially the Sky Lift model.  Expensive, but way cool and easy to use!  They were in process of building new models so I held up the order.  Maybe a Christmas present, hmmm...

So far the focus of the physio was stretching the tendons, not so much strength. started with that and the prognosis is good. Just have to be patient and keep at it.

I *think* the bodywork is aftermarket since there are no Honda markings or partnumbers on the inside.  No biggie, I got her at a very good price and condition is very good.

Yes I have a (2002) SP2 and will take it to the suspension guru that did my VF500F2 next year.

I still have the shims and compression valves from JD; he told me that is would be good for an SP too.. 

Front fork oil 10W+seals were fitted 3,5 years/10k miles ago so they are due for a service anyway. according to the PO, they are standard, set up for his weight. He's about my size and weight...

I've yet to properly RIDE her, so let's see how I like her.

The brakes (the rotors are by Braking, come from a 4th gen/VF500, they are awesome!  (my left wrist was not very happy,but a man has to do what a man has to do...)

The only problem is the 190/55 is always the most expensive tyre in the catalog. I am pretty sure the 190/55 did not exist when this bike first came out, so the manual specs the 50.

Yeah, looking at the Metzelers, there is some $35 premium.

Dunlop is due a new sport tire and in spring to usually do a "money off" offer....

With the Abbastand, I can take both wheels of a drive to my rubber man; the dealer simply is too expensive...

Oh man.  I've ridden a couple Rc51s.  One when they came out, right out of a crate.  Then another later that was moderately set up.  They get more comfortable and handle better the harder you push them.  Could not live with one as my only bike...  Which is not your problem!  Hell yeah!

The original final gearing is, I believe, 16 tooth front/40 tooth rear which as Timmy noted allows supersonic speeds in 6th. I switched to a 15/41 sprocket combo, ~10% difference, and although it's still high the improvement is dramatic and will probably double your clutch plate life.

In addition to what has been posted here, below is advice from luvtoleanit when I got my RC51 last summer. And I have included a photo just because I can't help it.

   When you can, the minimal list:

   15/41 gearing

   Kyle Racing Clip Ons (raises them up an inch and out an inch)

   New Seat

   Ohlins Rear

   Kyle Racing dogbone

   Kyle racing modified front forks

   Slip-ons and a tune

   Remove soft limiter and flapper

yea, I forgot to mention the flapper and the soft limiter (both done on mine).  I am in the minority about the seat though.  I ride on the stock seat even though I have the option to put on a sargent.

The seat (and other) ergonomics I will experience soon I hope (wrist and roads ok).  ~7 years ago my gut prevented me to reach the bars properly when I sat on a SP, that is now solved. Want to check her out the "as is" first.

Will direct funds to the technical side first, oil, coolant, hydraulics (speedbleeders ordered) and suspension. The Ohlins rear has never been serviced afaik, not by the PO who owned her 4 years.  The front got new 10W 2 years ago but remains oem. I kept JD's compression valves+shimstack so they can go in.

Add new rubber so that in total will approach a grand....

Flapper noted,  I will test if this 2002 EU model has the soft limitterr or not. There are still some german autobahns left w/o speelimits!

If and when the ergos bother me, a set of adjustable clipons might be next...

Decided NOT to rework the SP's front end myself, but will bring it to a shop.  Few things lead me to this....

I have taken standard forks apart and rebuild them, but for an USD, one needs specialized tools I read in the workshop manual.  and if The Dutchy confrims is a a biatch to do, I believe him! :goofy:

The compression valves that I bought from JD for redslut (but didnot get to fit in time for the Ace of spades tour) have a bleeding hole. Whilst good for the RC36 forks, the SP's already have a bleeding hole. So fitting these is off the cards. Gaining knowledge on RC51forums as well, so yeah, bring the Ohlins rear and -reportedly- OEM front end in. still deciding where...

Does this mean Dutchy will stop farkling?

The undertail is aftermarket, fitted by one of the PO's and they removed the seat lock. The release cable sticking out underneath, a simple pull suffices.

Last time I played that venue with redslut (which had an Akrapovic), the traffic cop did me a favour, clocking off at 39kmh over the limit (I was double that..)

He commented on the nice sound and glancing at redslut he asked in fact if she wan a SP....  :-)

The fine was 10 euro per KMH over.....  +9 euro admin fee..

So I will be very cautious next time round..

The PO had the aftemarket rear lights fitted, which means cutting of a section of the undertail. I'd preferred the tail to be oem stock breadbox lights but there you go...

Anyway, that meant cutting away the part that held the lock for the rear seat lid lock, "solved" by simply letting the release cable hang out.

No bueno.

so sourced the lock mechanism and got the 19mm hole drill bit  out.

Having established (with JD) that the compression valves I bought of him for redslut will NOT be good for the RC51, I will post them up in the classifieds next.

The valves have a bleeding hole; good for fork internal that donot have one already. The RC51-SP already has them (linked to the rebound adjustment that 3rd/4th gens don't have)

With it, I will sell the bespoke shimstacks for the compression valves, as well as shimstacks for rebound.  The OEM rebound valves are ultimately deemed good enough.

AFAIK, RaceTech initially never sold rebound valves but since customers kept asking....

I doubt there's clearance, but you could clamp to the cross-bar.

The fairing stay bar is ripe for U-bolt RAM attachments.  One for GPS.  One for radar.  A drink holder mount up there would be an instant touring upgrade!

Surely the fairing stay vibrates too much?

Stopped by the mechanic today to discuss going +2 up on the rear sprocket and long and behold, they were already fettling her... hussy...

Checked that there will be enough "room" for it; the 190/55 is larger (it now has a 190/50) and a larger sprocket mean moving the wheel back a bit.

As the chain+sprocket set is on for 3k miles, we'll just put in a new sprocket alone.  front sprocket will stay as is, it will want to wheelie enough as is thank you..

The oil in the Ohlins was sticky, so that was well due

On redslut, the fuel light would come on  after ~300km (21 litre tank)

the SP will probably be ~180km....  (180 kitre tank...)  :goofy:

Yeah, me thinks, aside from the degreased fuel capacity, that light is gonna light up more frequent...

With the PO "not sure" when the spark plugs were changed last, I get me some NGK's. Ordered a Canyon Dancer in the US so they price of them sparkers was very fair.

The gap of the old plug is still ok (~1mm where 1.4mil means worn) so these will go in the "when I need one in a hurry" box...

Also got rid of them pesky little clear lens front indicators and fitted a set of OEM's I picked up cheap!

(still need a pair for the rear; but not rush since the PO chopped the OEM rerar inner cowl for an aftermarket undertail..)

The headers are stainless, so I did a quick check if Autosol+scothpad would make an impression, since I had the Ohlins refurbished.

Verified that both fans come on at 103 celcuis ok.  Looking forward to a pair of fins that will direct extra airflow over the rads.

Only time I got be on the Autobahn was in a rental Opel.  I was flat out (prob 90-95mph?) and a black Mercedes went by me so fast it rocked my car.   Flew into The Netherlands, visited the coast and went to Floriade.  Then down into Germany.

More and more, large sections of Autobahns have a speed restriction, be it "polution" or "noise".

There are still enough places where freedom runs free!

Those Lasers produce 103~105Dba (Douglasthecook would be proud). One has no damping wool left, the other has some left (and is louder...).

Even with new wool, they will remain way to loud for my (and police) liking.

The RC is allowed to make 94dba with +2 leeway...

They stock and sell Power Commanders, but there view is that I do not NEED one. Curve not perfect by far but if they were me, they'd leave it (too).

All in all I was there a good 6 hours (including coffe and lunch breaks).  A great father and son shop.  Mile a well know and succesful racer in the Netherlands.  Carl Forgerty got beaten and he reportedly said "WHO the HELL is this Pajic guy???"  :-)

JMHO, the Laser  set does have a better look then the BOS cannisters. However... These BOS cans look good... I would have changed the link pipes so the cannisters would follow the line of the of the rear cowl... They are just a bit steap to me currently...

My 86 VF500 is converted to 17 inch wheels. I will admit yours looks a lot better on the 16/18 inch wheels. With the 17 inch wheels you  do get a better choice of rubber but on the whole, I think the OE wheels and tyres you can get are fine.

Ok, dual headlights on redslut didnot prevent the Lithuanian driver from not seeing me, but nothing ventured nothing gained...

OEM is 1 headlight mirror "normal" and 1 shaped "hi-beam", both use regular H7.

Connected the hibeam through a control unit that allows me to adjust the strength down so it matches the normal beam/stops ongoing traffic from getting annoyed.

Full power Hi beam/flash function remains.

And yes, there are different light bulbs (one yellowish) in the "running lights"..

When I teach my students how to safety wire, they MUST do it by hand first and be competent with that, then I show them how to do it with the pliers. To me, safety wire, well it's important, but it is also art. You can tell alot about a mechanic by the way they safety wire!!!

When safety wiring, remember if one bolt loosens, it should tighten/put tension on the other one. The best way to think about it is a reverse  or mirrored "S".

Looks good on the top pic, not sure about the tension, but the twists per inch look consistent, and it has been done on the correct direction. For the caliper bolts though, I can;t really tell how many twists per inch, almost looks like it isn't. Should be right around 6-8 full twists per inch. It could be correct, and the angle could be deceiving. Overall, I give you a solid B+. If I was able to tell the tension, that could raise you a full letter grade. It would most definitely pass track scrutineering though, so yeah, you did good!!!

Aye, Gilles they are! Rode some 300+ km today and the "action" is just superb.

Wee snag is that the side stand point where one boots his boot to kick it out is obscured by the longer rod to the gearbox axle. Used a few spacers since the mounting bolts are a tad too long/too close to the swingarm. I will figure/tinker something out!

Really pleased with the feel of the radial clutch MC; the OEM is not "heavy" but I reckon it is even 20% lighter still. My wrist is thankful!

My dealer is inquiring if he ordered the "wrong" one from the distributor as the lever adjustment know touches the tacho at full lock.

Pending that I'm holding off ordering the brake MC too.....  (and pending funds :goofy: )  I *do* love the feel (and looks, I admit...) of the Galespeed...

Ok....to solve your sidestand issue, just have the side stand peg cut, and lowered when in the down position, or aft in the up position,that's what I had to do to mine. As for the radial MC's, yes, they are quite nice, I like the consistent pull/feel, even after a full day on the track, they still feel the same! Perhaps you could move the MC outboard 2-3mm, if there's room.....

That's a good idea!  

I can move the Gilles' "in" by 7mm; used their spacers as the tapered M8 bolts I got with it (not Gilles) are too long are barely clear the swing arm w/o the spacers.

Ordered new shorter stainless torx ones; if that does not solve it, relocating the peg is next! It sure helps to know a friendly welder (who likes single malt too).

Need to see what that will do to the actual spring coil though....

What you can do is have a spring stub welded in the current position, it doesn't need to be very long, just long enough to keep the spring in the proper position/location, then you have the kickstand lever/peg moved down. That way the spring has the normal/correct tension, and you maintain function of the kick stand. Easy, no?

Racing is dangerous, saw  the superstock 1000 crash right in front of me. Reminiscent of the Simoncelli incident, seeing how anothet bike rides right over a body is something you donot wish to see.

Packed up and left as seeing the medics franticly working for a looong time and ambulances arriving took me back to Lithuania... :-(

Once home read that Fritz is concious and injuries appear to be "ok"...

Replaced the fake cf ones for much brighter (21W halogen) ones that look more Honda OEM.

The topframe should have 2 holes for "proper" oem Honda indicators (as per the fiche) but their is only one... Och well..

Gilles Tooling stopped producing chain adjustors for the RC51 a while back and despite some 40 owners showing interest, they were not interested in running a batch.

a member on the RC51 forum found a company in the UK that was willing and able.

Yeah, one thing he didnot think off was getting his logo "right". If you fit the axle as it came from the factory (nut on the RHS), "RACETORX: will be upside down.

Something for the next run I reckon.

Interested in how it performs up and down at high speed , whistling, buffeting etc

At high speed (ok a mere 160kmh on the VF) it hold up well; no discernable extra wind noise.

With the sunshield UP though, there is a noticeable extra whistling. If I tilt my helmt a tad forward, it disappears. So the combumation with my VF it is not perfect. I will hold on to my clear lens.

I will try tomorrow on the RC51 as the position it a bit forward/lower.

The screens are optically perfect, to be expected as they are made by Aria and not Ali :-)

Some comment that the sunvisor should be longer/lower but I find it just fine

"Always look on the bright side of life" and on the shielding bright light, this piece of kit does a grand job. Clearly manufactured by Arai from Japan versus Ali from China, very well.

Owning already a clear and a smoke visor but not wanting to carry either as "spare" all the time, this seemed the perfect solution. With the sun visor down, great! No discernable extra wind noise. Perfect blended vision. Happy chappy. Put it in the middle or high up position and a distinct whistle appear which rises and falls with the variation in speed. Not a happy camper. For reference: with the entire visor up, there is no whistle.

With main visor down and sun visor 1/2 or completely up, I can make the whistle go away by placing my hand over the rubber strip on the sun visor, but that was not in the design brief I reckon. Or tilt my head 20 degrees down (which then stops the whistle) which doesnot allow safe viewing of the road ahead. Both on my -pretty much sitting straight up- Honda VF500F2 and my -Ducati here I come- Honda RC51, this annoying whistle is always there. with the sun visor 1/2 or completely up.

Acceptable for a 10 second ride though a tunnel or a shaded forest section. But absolutely not for say riding home in the evening after a day riding in the sun. So no, for me, on my bikes, this is not what I expected and see this as a unfortunate purchase. But as always, YMMV Ride safe!

The blue/red ones are very delicate, would not survive the trip. The latter ones I reckon that farmer would object  :goofy:

With the OEM undertray having made it across the pond, I took the aftermarket LED undertray+(cut up to fit) OEM one off.  Found out that the oem taillight needs specific grommets so I will post picks of the completed work in the next couple of days.

While reorganising my "spares" cabinet, I came across 54 shiims in various sizes plus the OEM RC51 rebound compression valves. I have no use for either so I put them up in the "Classifieds".

Dutch CL had a set of "race bodywork" for the RC51 "from Japan". So I swung round to have a look. 

Hmmm, all panels still properly wrapped but the shipping paperwork said "Hongkong".... :-)

The seller (the father since his son was in hospital follwing his wreck) looked puzzled... "Hongkong is Japan no?"

I am pretty sure he feigned ignorance, but we agreed a price we were both happy with....

Plenty horror stories on the web on Chinese bodywork, but one wintry/bored day will test fit it.  In the attic space now, hope I never really need them :-)

Accompanied a 4th gen friend who had been tinkering with his carbs's internals (dynoyet kit) for a dyno run this morning. Yeah it rained persistenly, but there is no bad riding weather is there?

While there, I decided to put the VF500F2 up for a run as well. Just to see how well a 31 year old bike performs.  Never really saw a lot of VF500 dyno charts posted anyway, only reports that the 70BHP claims by Honda were "optimistic"....

As the OEM muffler design doesnot allow for the CO2 probe to be "in" properly, we skipped the A/F measurement

When you drain the tank, instead of a suck, how about getting some paper towels? I have never had to taste gas, but when it gets low, I put on gloves and grab a few paper towels to soak in the rest of it. The last thing I wanna do is put gas fumes in my lungs, or gas in my mouth. 

That being said, it looks like you are doing a great job at making that old girl a new (virgin) again! Will be a great bike to ride I'm sure!! And a looker too!! Well done!!!

And (as other RC51 owners reported) the cover's design 1.0 makes it interfere/push against the panel. So what is the best method to remodel/shape/bend outward the ABS a bit? Like half an inch.

The stickerset came in, quality looks really good. And as per their instructions, the material is bubble-free allowing air to be pushed out. No soapy water etc since the stickers can be pulled off for 2 days. Any wrinkles in the material will be "righted" with a hot air gun. We will see!  

Will fit and ride with the chinesium panels for a while first, see how they hold. Before putting the decals on.

Asked (and I got) to replace the stickers that emulate the headlight with the stars and stripes from another RC51 set

and since I will be running PIRELLI instead of MICHELIN, they changed those as well

(OK one set they made in black; whereas these go on the under cowl; they will fix this in Yellow or yellow/red)

The chinesium ABS panels' (no idea of pressed or molded) tabs look like this.

Reportedly they can break, so what can I do in advnace to reinforce? Sperglue&bakinf soda (sodium bicarbonate)

The "radiator surround foam bits"were not included with the panels and the OEM bits are like $7 a piece (and you need 6....). So I bought some "Soudaband". A self expanding foam (20x20mm) with a sticky tape backing. $8 for 5 meters or so  :goofy:

Nippy but nice, 1st ride in 2018. Testing the chinesium (side/rear) panels and the new FactoryPro shift star kit.

All good!. 

I had a problem with hard to get into neutral and that is 100% solved. Shifting feels solid/smooth.

The chinesium side panel on the right side fitted ok to the oem upper (top hole needed to be expanded). But the lhs requires some thought...

They look good. Let us know if you can tell the difference. The OE lines on my two 500s have held up very well compared to other bikes I have owned. They didn't skimp on quality in those days.

There indeed seems nothing wrong with the OEM ones after all these years....  but that 20% discount on the brake lines and a super deal on the clutch line was too good to pass up.

Not forgetting the 0.05% interest on one's savings account these days..... Not spending is actaually COSTING me money.....  :goofy:

When firing up the engine for the 1st time since a cold winterstop, something was smoking.....

Had to put the bike in the shed (priorities...), but sniffed some fuel the next day and saw a small wet spot...

Yep, fuel tap is leaking....  In the off position..... In ON not so much.

Any pointers to a new seal??

Had put the tank brimful with ethanol free fuel, so......

I drove off very slowly to the main road and once on it, opened up. Only for the engine/gearbox to protest heavily.
Tried shifting down but no, it felt like the gearbox was jammed..... Not matter what I tried, could not shift down so pulled over....

Fitted the heated grips on the SP so took her out.

After 3 hours, my hands are still warm, but the rest is not.

First thing I've always done is install front VF500F stays on all of my VF's that run OEM signals.  And the Honda parts micro fiche had the part numbers mixed between front and rear.   Had to re-order for a few customers before I figured that one out.

Honda certainly didn't believe in commonality of parts. The ones on my UK 500F2 have 7 grooves on them, so different again.

Nah......   I did the job prior to watching the race on the telly  :lurk: :goofy:

Will take her down to Luxemburg in 1,5 weeks time for the "1,000 curves" rally.

350 clicks route, 2,500 participants. This year will take us around Nurburg, pretty sure we will NOT be riding the Ring itself...

Ok I could ride the Tail of the Dragon 3 times and call it a day.....

When you got those RT cartridge emulators did you swap springs too?

Will put these to the test for the rally. Picked them up a few years ago, yet to be used...

Tent, sleeping bag, mattresses, bottle of single malt and a fresh pair of underpants should fit.
