VTEC Upper fairing replacement

A while back my motorcycle was hit by a large truck in a parking lot. (Some of you might remember the post)

After waiting for the parts and time to do the work, I managed to get it all together to get ready for the riding season here in Colorado.

Here is the "how to" on replacing the upper fairing ona VTEC VFR.

remove the mirrors and set them aside. I do it in order to make things easier.

remove the trim covers for the windscreen.

Then the windscreen itself.

remove the left and right fairings.

take out the 2 special clips by pushing in the center and then pull them out.

remove the bezel by pulling,with medium force on the 2 pins on either side.

remove the colored trim piece on either side of the bezel as well.

the only thing holding the fairing now is 2, 10mm nuts...remove them and drop the fairing down

take all light connections off and the temp. sensor.

While it is removed, take out the light housings (phillips head screws) and the temperature sensor.

don't forget the grommets or

the screw clips to go on the new fairing.

install everything back on the new part and connect your lights. Check them before going too far into the install.

Go in reverse order as shown here and put it all together again.

While I was at it I changed the oil and cleaned/lubed the chain.

It has new tires as well.

Need some pinnage, here!

I just pulled mine off a couple days ago and couldn't, for the life of me, get the little black guage cluster cover off. I pulled and pulled but was afraid of breaking the mounts off of the cluster. I also couldn't unplug the lower headlights (dims). I was able to separate the headlights from the upper with the help of some "little hands." The turn signals and temp sensor came off with it which were then easily removed. Good write up though! In case you don't have the manual, follow this post; it's step-for-step!

Back in the old days my mum could work wonders with a tin of spam. No more of that now... can't even look at the stuff on the shelf or... on the screen.

Nice write up on the fairing. With a new Zero Gravity windscreen on the way I'll only get part way through this process, but every little thing helps at this point.

Yeah those 2 hidden "pins" go into rubber grommets and they don't wan to let go at all. Just keep some even pressure on them and they will come out.

I also had problems with the low beam lights and getting the connectors off. I just kept at it. I did remove one of them from the housing and then removed it from the socket.

BE SURE YOU DON'T TOUCH THE LAMP WITH A BARE HAND. Fingerprints limit the lifetime of the lamps.

To get the low beam connectors off you have to squeeze the sides of the connector to get them to let go.

I still remember taking that stuff off to my buddy Craigs bike after he hit a deer.

Now just imagine trying to remove this stuff with deer fur all over the place and half of the right side scrapped off from kissing the pavement. I had to remove the front subframe on Craigs bike and put it in a vise and go to town on it with a pipe bender after he ran over that deer 2 years ago. It was pretty bent up, he radiator too. All of which I just picked the same point on the subframe (looks like a deer antler when off the bike actually) and measured it from the center to get a feel for how close I was to getting it bent back into shape. I had to heat it up with an acetene torch to get it to bend in some places. Then touched it up with some black spray paint and reinstalled it, good as new!! The wires sort of wrap around from the left to the right and there are little nubs on the frame for sensors to hang off of. I wrapped the sharp parts with electrical tape after reading about Havagan and his problems with wires chaffing. Hes been riding it ever since, fixed for less then $700 bucks in new plastics.

I left the headlights on the frame or whatever and removed the plastic
for repair and paint...
Now the nose has an orange tone to it.....
Any thoughts on how to get the right paint R157 .
The delaer has a 2in bottle....worthless..
