I'm having trouble installing my cam shafts in my 86 vf 500. The rear cyinders (1 &3) I have figured out but the front(2&4) are confusing me. I have a Clymer Manual and it sucks. It says to use # 4 cylinder which is the front right and with the TF mark lined up on the starter clutch, line up the intake lobe on the cam on #4 at 7 o-clock position and the exhaust at 1 o-clock position. If you do this for starters it doesnt sit in the bearing journals and #2 exhaust vavles are hitting the piston and the engine wont turn over. I took pictures before I dissasembled the engine looks like the marks are 90 degrees off. It ran fine like this for years, on the rear set of cylinders the marks on the cam gears line up everytime you rotate the engine I would think that the front should do the same. I'm stumped....
Not sure if this is helpful or pertains to your year, but...
On my cam gears, there are FI, FE, RI, RE and Arrow marks.
If the crank is at TDC for Cyl3, the rear cam gear marks will be at RI, RE while the front cam gears will be on the arrows and vice versa. You should be able to then turn the crank shaft and verify he reverse that when on TDC Cyl4 the front is FI, FE while the rear is on the arrows.
May want to search online for a Honda manual, through many vehicles I have found all after market manuals to be complete crap.
I just assembled my 1985. I have both the Clymer and Honda FSM and I am currently looking at the Honda FSM. For the 84-85 it says you can use the TR mark for both cams in both banks. For the 86, it says that you can use the T1 for both. All views are from left. RI cam lobe is about 1 o'clock RE cam lobe is about 11 o'clock FI cam lobe is about 4 o'clock FE cam lobe is about 11 o'clock
It says that you can use the TF setting if you are just doing the REAR BANK ONLY but the overriding comment in the box above when doing the crankshaft setting. And I quote the box:" FROM THE TR OR T1 POSITION, YOU CAN INSTALL BOTH CAMSHAFTS FOR BOTH BANKS. FURTHER ROTATION OF THE CRANKSHAFT FOR TIMING PURPOSES IS NOT NECESSARY.
the ri re fi fe marks are cast right on the cam shaft just to show the location of that shaft in the cylinder head. The gears that bolt on to the cam shafts have 4 lines marked on them 2 side by side with no writing on them and then 90 degrees opposite those marks are another 2 marks like IE etc. beside.
Using the TR mark you can install both the front 2 cam shafts? and view it from the left side of the engine? the fireing order is 1432 to install the rear cams you are supposed to have the TR mark lined up and then 1 and 11 oclock and then what do you do for the front 2 cams?
The Phantom, Apr 9 2006, 09:27 AMHe means the rearmost pair of cylinders.
Rear being 1 & 3, front being 2 & 4. The HONDA FSM indicated that you do not change the crankshaft position if installing all 4. It only changes away from the TR (on the 84-85) if you were installing the rear-bank only.
Dale: The Honda manual indicated to setup the front 2 cams at 4 & 11 o'clock.
If I can get it to work, I will try scanning in the appropriate page and emailing it this evening. I won't promise that I know how to post a proper pic here but if nothing else, I should be able to email a pic or two to those that want it. Perhaps you can P.M. me with your email address. I will be offline til later in the day.
dalesiemens, Apr 9 2006, 05:50 PMso when timing the front cams the 11 oclock and 4 oclock is lined up on # 2 cylinder? with marks 2I and 2E showing?
Dale: Ended up being pretty much as Honda FSM indicated. I had a real son-of-a-bi... time getting the cams attached, as I hadn't realized that the wire that I was using on the cam chain tensioner apparatus was partially disengaged, putting a lot of pressure on the cam chain when I was assembling the cam's and sprockets.
P.M sent and check your hotmail account too.
Are scans readable to you??
