I know the pump itself is working. I tried bypassing the whole pump system and running the fuel directly from the tank to the engine but it stalls (due to lack of pressure when accelerating I imagine)...
Are there any other models that would work as a substitute? Are there 'aftermarket' relays available? I'm looking at various salvage shops but anyone if has any insight it would be appreciated.
i was looking for one for an 85 the other day and the pump relay and fuel pump for that model year are discontinued. not sure if it's for the 86 or not too. i'm pretty sure yours will run without the fuel pump. i've run mine without and it's just a bit harder to get started, but once it's started it should run fine. my understanding was the fuel pump was mainly to get fuel to the carb bowls when it was starting up, but gravity does most of the work thereafter.
i did bypass the fuel pump entirely and it started up and ran while stationary, but when i accelerated even moderately, it would sputter and stall out. And further still, by doing that bypass, i would have to fill up much more frequently, and run the risk of the bike stalling out on me when i really don't want it to.... (does anyone ever want their bike to stall on them?) Gravity will work only when the tank is more than 25 % full and i like to ride it for at least 200 km between fillups which would surely not be possible anymore....... I'd much rather just replace the relay for a few dollars and be done with the issue? Any online vendors thay may have this in stock?

Try these motorcycle parts stores. DENNIS KIRK aftermarket parts...PARTS UNLIMITED aftermarket... they always have a line on parts or can give you some places to try...
thanks for all the help so far. I've checked out all the resources mentioned and no luck so far. The closest thing i've found is the part that Dave0042 ordered for his '86 vfr 700 (part # 36100-mb1-701). My bike is an 86 VFR 750, so maybe they are the same part or very similar...
My part # is 36100-ml7-013 and the parts look quite similar on the service honda microfiche, but the pics are pretty poor quality and don't show the connectors which is the key issue. My local salvage shop said they had had a three pronged relay connector which i would have to modify to try and get it to work..... I'm caught between buying the one off my local salvage shop and trying to modify it or buying the same one Dave0042 bought and hoping for the best (with a modification). The main drawback is the salvage shop is 20 minutes away and ordering the part online will take at least a week to get it up here to the great white north biggrin.gif .... and i have so little patience .....
My VFR gets here in about a week and a half, so I am not sure about the exact setup of your relay. Most of the relays that I have seen are all basically the same shape/size. Little cubes that have a few prongs on one side.
If you are considering modifying anything try this first. Go to your local radio shack, or your local car parts dealers, and try to match up what you can. A relay is a relay, is a relay, so if you find on rated at the right power/voltage, and you can make a new one work, then you will be far better off than modifying a used relay.
If you have a really hard time, you could go completely custom and buy a relay and install it as you see fit. They are really easy to wire.
-neg battery -pos battery -device pos -device neg -turn on neg -turn on positive
You can combine the 3 negatives if you want/need to, or they can go to ground if you have a good frame ground connection.
PS. have you checked the switched lead to the relay? If you have no power going to the relay, you will not have a functioning relay.
What i did end up doing yesterday was finding a salvage shop called Sonic Cycle in London Ontario who had just parted out three 86 VFR's (accident damage) and so they had three of these relay's in stock for $40 each. They were the only place i could find that had them in stock, as i prefer to get OEM parts if possible. They will ship to you if need be, but i preferred to go for a 4 hour ride to see their shop. Nice people to deal with. Prior to that I had called about 15 salvage yards in Ontario and a variety of online parts distributors Stateside. So for me, I am going back to the shop right now where i left my bike and i'll put her in and see if she fires up nicely.... Thanks again to all for your help and happy riding this weekend shane

she rides like a beauty and i was just telling my girlfriend that i almost forgot why i bought this bike (i hadn't been on it for 3 weeks) and when i installed that newish relay and she fired up again ..... whoa - with those twin brazen kerker cans and i just got a sweet LED system put in the tail and for the indicators...man.... no more riding of the 450 nighthawk for me....... ( i'll post those pics later of the LED setup)
As for the relay, I would recommend that if you prefer to go with OEM parts and not modify something yourself, then visit the servicehonda.com site and look through their online microfiche and you can get your part #... (then call them and see if you can order it brand new -somewhat unlikely- otherwise call your local salvage yards. I have a list of about 15 in Ontario if you like). All the other suggestions mentioned can possibly work just as well, just a matter if the distributor has them in stock or if you feel like fabricating them. As for me it was the relay that was the problem, so i am relieved.... now I just have to get my front headlight working again... blink.gif
