VFR Discussion Group -> Rothlesburger Dumped it

I read this thread earlier tonight and held off on comment. I just saw the picture in the paper and had to comment for the poor guy. The back tire looks to have some fairly small chicken strips. goofy.gif

Has anyone ever seen a full face helmet after an impact with much of the force directed on the chin bar? I'm serious, I'm not trying to be a wise ass.  I've often wondered how well that chin bar is really going to hold up.



Anyone have experience with this?  blink.gif

Yep, been there, done that. I had a lady turn left in front of me years ago and I hit face first right where the top comes down and meets the body of a Camaro. I had just bought a full face helmet a month before. I sure got my moneys worth out of that helmet. The chin bar didn't break in my accident. I hit at about 40mph into the side of the car. It hurt BAD dry.gif

We all take risks every day.  If we are sensible, we will do what we can to minimize the risks that we take.  We each have to draw our own lines about this stuff.

I assume that every cage driver gets up in the morning with one goal for that day.  That goal being to kill as many motorcyclists as possible and then absolve themselves with the cute little phrase, "I didn't see him."

I operate my motorcycle accordingly.

But I still expect drivers to operate their vehicles responsibly.  I also expect that they will be held accountable when they do not do this.  We pay a lot of tax money to cops, courts and prosecutors to hold drivers accountable.  We have a right to expect that this will be done.  And like other rights, if we ignore this one it will go away.

So I see this as two separate issues.

One is my expectations of driver competence.

The other is my risk management strategy.

Neither one is meant to replace or cancel out the other.

I think that traffic laws should be enforced.  I think that those who are paid to enforce these laws have been allowed to shirk their duty but still get paid.  I think that our expectation of drivers have lowered to the point where we tolerate anything.  I also think that this is wrong and should stop.

I think that if we abandon our expectations of competent drivers, our streets will turn into something like a Mad Max movie.  I don't want that to happen.  So if I don't complain, I am not doing my part.

But that doesn't mean that I won't try to anticipate stupid moves by drivers and do what I can to save my life and limbs.

These are two separate issues and shoud be treated as such.

It is like having a cold and a broken leg at the same time.  You can't expect one Rx to fix both.
