Well I got my nose fairing back after having the dumbo ears filled then the whole thing repainted. The paint match is not as good as I was hoping for since you have a butt joint with the side fairings its really easy to tell any difference. But then again stock pieces don't all match either on any bike.
My question is will color rites paint match to within fairly acceptable parameters or perhaps these guys who say they can do factory color matching?
I know I know...local local local. I did use local, and the best we have here. I just got an email from cycle finish, the link I post above and he said PPG may have a color code. So I jumped on their site and they do. They list it as being for Honda Motorcycles from 98-99 with the same color code, Y124P, as my 2000. Could this variation in year be because maybe this same color was used on bikes in other countries during those years?
I just checked the web and in fact Canada had yellow available in the early 5th gen years.

Sorry, didn't mean to rub it in. I willing to bet, that even with the same color code, you'll find it will be off. Luck of the batch. A lighter color is gonna give problems, due to fade, on top of everything. The only 100% sure bet, is a full re-paint, from the same batch. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/sad.gif)
yea I know and I am not wanting a full match as I know thats unrealistic but it CAN and WILL get closer than what this it. I will post some pics shortly.

And YES, I forgot to have them fill the inner screw holes for the dumbo ears which I will have them do on the repaint.

Right now I'm not going to do anything with the signals. I may end up running LED's to the mirrors like was done in the original thread

A custom guy I have been emailing said he has matched the paint and it involves some translucent black, translucent blue, pale yellow and sun yellow plus the pearl and clear of course.

I am curious to know if you brought your upper to the shop along with a fender or panel for them to match to, or just the piece to be painted along with the paint code? I've had great results when I brought two parts and said, "I want Part A to look like Part B please". I watched a guy match paint from my yellow(sunset pearl) F4i fender on a scrap bumper out back in under 30min using stuff off his shelf, no paint code, no calls to supplier, no reference books. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand codes (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif)
You are right, the number of coats of pearl will definately change the look of the finish, but in your case my guess is that the base color was off. I am pulling this hypothesis from the last pic, where I can see the level of metallics in the sunlight(the pearls are reflecting the sunlight in this level of light, so you see them more than you would in low light, where you look 'through' them at the base color). It looks to me like the they have their mid coat mix very close, but the base is a bit light, or 'white'. Ever notice the difference between a Ford Mustang yellow, and say, a GM Monte Carlo or Corvette yellow? I think that's what you're dealing with here. The Ford color(Lemon Ice) has more white in it, where the GM color(Performance/Sun yellow?) has more pigment and is a darker yellow. You need to start with the darker yellow, because the color will 'lighten' as you add the layer of pearls. Make sense? Hope this helps you Mike! (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/smile.gif)

Wow, I don't know what to say. Did you bring it up when you picked it up? Maybe they'll redo it for you?
Here's an example of how pearls can throw off the color of the base coat, my F4i has blue and purple pearls sprayed over black. In the areas of low light, you can see through them to the black, but otherwise the bike looks blue. Second pic is a closeup of the left air duct cover, where it meets the tank.
On second thought, the tail cowl may have thrown them off a bit too, as it would have the highest amount of sun bleach. Giving them a left or right fairing may have been a better idea(although a bit unsettling, the thought of anything happening to it... (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/unsure.gif) )
