As it turns out, yella just ain't my thang

Okay - so I love my Viffer. I do, really. So much so, I'm willing to go to war with the wifey over selling it (she wants me to, I... uh, well.... don't). ANYWAY - as much as I love the bike, I don't love the color. Yellow just isn't me. I was thinking about going down a road like this:

But, I've an open mind on the subject - not opposed to painting it another color (even flat black, Timmy). Please restrain yourselves from posting up pics of bikes in the latest 'Hello Kitty' colors. But, any suggestions on color that I should consider for the 5th Gen?

I suspect that you're going to get as many answers as there are members on this board. Although that blue pic you posted up there looks good, it wouldn't be my first choice. I would prefer the dark red we see (candy red ??), or a dark green. My all time favorite however would be bright orange (Repsol type of orange). But that's just me.

PS Have you thought about buying one of them aftermarket kits from China? Veefermadness installed one and I think his comments overall were positive. Prolly cheaper than having the entire bike repainted and you still have an extra set of fairing if you even decide to sell it or go back to original.

The blue looks good, but i would use the Lapis Blue Matallic that the VTEC model got overseas.

Oh yeah, and the wheels should be black, not blue.

I'm a sucker for Toro1's Tangerine Pearl color, but I like the blue as well.
The wheels should be silver or black, though.

What's that sound I hear? Sounds distinctly similar to the rattle of a ball in a can... and it's coming from the DC area...

Gunmetal silver would look good...

Well, lots of colors and designs to go with. If not for a design, then I'd say either asphalt black, pearl white, or that metallic blue.

I thought about orange, too... really no where near a final decision - dig the blue is all. I looked at the kits, but with the 5gen kit, I'd still have to paint the tank. NBD, I suppose - will look at them a little closer.I'm more interested in something a bit more subdued than the REPSOL set up (looks good, but not for me).

Matte black, maybe, but I think I'm going to stay away from the silvers... I think Burns is considering a color change in that direction for his 4Gen.

But, yeah, I think the wheels, regardless of body color, should be black or silver (call me old fashioned).

I'm with PolarBear on this one...orange would be my pick. Not the Repsol scheme, just solid orange. I've seen pix of a 5th gen. in that color and it looks great. Also, I'd leave the wheels black or go to silver.

I'm still new here, so I don't know if my opinion counts or not :goofy: but I really like the stock red color of my 98. It looks super on the 5th gens. The only thing I would do different is incorporate somewhere to put some "gear driven cam badging" and chrome the wheels. I think these wheels look great chromed. Now I will go back to my hole. :lurk:

Question though is if you want to keep the bike "forever". Because only then would the invested $ make sense (unless you got a free respray somewhere)
To a potential buyer, respray will always smell like "crashed".

How about Subaru Rally Blue with the wheels gold with matching Gold logo's, or silver logo's.

I think that mexican colors are in order... solid with a metalflake over... maybe a fade coming up from the lowers... :fing02:

You planning on doing a lot of the work yourself? If so, I've got a set of 6th gen fairings you might as well bang out at the same time... :comp13: Otherwise seems like a lot of money relative to the value of the bike just to change the color.

I hear ya, Dutchy... I got the wife about 7 years before I got back into riding - at first she was okay with it, but now it's just an irresposible risk that I shouldn't be taking. And, as for the bike - found a deal that I couldn't pass up... for $2.7K and a little work, I got me one VERY fine motorcycle. I figured I could always change the color if I had to.

So, did you end up getting it painted???

I don't believe they're interested in your safety(insur), I think it's the fun time you have without them they don't want.

I know I'd have a hard time deciding what color to use were I to paint mine. But then I like my yellow one.

Why don't you spend some time visiting auto dealerships of all brands, and maybe a color will just say to you "this is the one". Or check out some hot rod and custom shows. Those guys do some awesome paint jobs with unique colors.

Dang. Painting over the factory yellow fairings. You're gonna make some people mad. LOL You could probably sell those fairings and make a good penny.

Go with what you like. Just to add more contrast, I would make the wheels a different color.

The VFR I picked up had been painted in a metallic, darker red that I think looks really nice. Also, they added a black accent under the windscreen, ontop of the cowl and over the bodywork by the tail-light. I think the black and red has some nice contrast.

I have an inside source to the "rattle of a ball in a can" industry!! I can hook up about any color from Ballet Slipper Pink to Leather Boots Brown!! I might start thinking about repainting now!! :fing02:

I second the orange, but I like more of the copper metallic orange rather than a solid bright orange. I also like the blue but prefer a lighter metallic blue.

I worked in autobody for 9 years and always LOVED the look of a satin metallic basecoat. I would love to paint a bike a bright tangerine metallic orange but put a matte clear over it. I have a feeling this love would fade eventually though... Who knows...

This is Toro's and I was just having this conversation with Burns two days ago...

Right now, the repaint is a toss up between something VERY similar to this AND a dark metallic blue. I really like the blacked out frame. Though, I think I would flat black the fairing ducts instead of putting black in front like that.

So, I'm rummaging through ebay like I often do in the last few minutes at work waiting for my car pool ride when I happen across a RWB fairing kit out of Korea (I'm sure it's just Chinese by way of Korea)... ANY WAY, I had to stop for a moment and contemplate the possibilities of a 5th Gen RWB. That's when I remembered seeing this pic. Is yours a kit or a custom paint job??

Your blue is a great color, but you need to break it up. Use some black and grey stripes or accents. Check out Tapeworks for ideas. Whatever you do, don't keep the blue wheels. I say paint 'em black.

You might also want to peruse the various factory WSB or MOTGP teams for good ideas. There's always a handful of bikes with great paint schemes that you could take something from. If you like that blue, check out Rizla's colors.

Actually, it does -- Black Gold. It's how I painted my RC51 front fender and did touch up to other areas. The color matched perfectly as it is real HOK paint, and every HOK color is available -- kandys, pearls, metallics. As long as you don't need too many basecoats, use a good clear coat, and take the time finish it properly, it can turn out very very nice.

IMHO, I like a 5th gen blacked out, it just looks modern and badass. Someone posted a pic. recently.

I am not a fan of blue, however I love the blue we didnt get in the US.

I'm thinking about redoing my fairings Ducati 848 white some time down the line. How would I find the paint code for that color? Or if there's another way to get the information to give to a shop, I'm all eyes.
