Old and slow?

Do they say that while you are passing them around the outside???? :laughing6-hehe:

wow... that will be tricker than the factory RC30's by the time you are done with it... looks sharp!

Welcome aboard.
You are at home now for sure :fing02:

That list of mods is enough to make most on here drool. I know I did. :491:

If you're shooting for the least weight possible and spearing no effort, why not make carbon fiber gas tank? It doesn't even have to cost a ton. Do it yourself using existing tank as a mold? Just a thought.

Good luck with your build and keep the progress coming.

Thanks!

here is the carbon bodywork b4 it is straipped and repainted silver

The whole bike is getting redone and there is not much left on it not upgraded.

You can see the subframe but is is a wee little carbon fiber stump/seat.

I have intentions of having a billet SSS made too once i get the bike back with some more room for the tire

Thank you for the welcome

I have had a carbon tank sitting here for over two years i made wating to install it. I also have a spare tank being modded to accept top ram air tubes like the RC45 so i can build top carbon tubes for them too if i choose.

I bike has been getting worked on for 3 years and the project just slowly took on more stuff.

I have some many parts with me here now i am liable to just take her apart again to install the boxes of new parts to replace the old new parts

me too LOL

The bike still is a passion and i have loved then since 88

the motor is done i think and the heads are short port moriwaki race heads with new valves and freshened up. It had mori cams and HRC pistons. I was hoping for 118-120 rear wheel and shedding alot of weight

Welcome
You won't hear of anyone mocking your RC30 here, all of us wish we could have one next to our mass produced VFRs. If I could ever find one for a rebuild project I'd be elated (and have to get a promotion or a higher paying job)
Very nice work
#33

Kidding of course...beautiful work
#35
I'm working on a build right now too! ... however after reading this thread my project is looking slightly less impressive...

Regardless of that, the bike looks great :fing02:
#36
...wow... :beatdeadhorse:

your "old" bike is still 4yrs newer than my VFR project, heh. kids don't know squat about cool...they only know newer must mean better. amazing work, mate.
#37
Veeeery nice!!
All you need now is for toro1 to come up with a supercharger kit .
#38
Very nice ongoing project. I am amazed at the quality you have put into the parts. I would have been happy with the magnesium wheels you had on before. Very anal attention to detail, that is a compliment.

builds are builds and i enjoy them all. i will go check in on yours.

I have done a complete custom 2-1 undertail exhaust with GP tail and subframe on my RC51 and i am now going to do a VFR SSS swinargm conversion on it too

Thank you for the compliment!

Funny on how the bike got rolling with the build. I scored some suzuka moriwaki race heads with matching flatslides and wanted them installed. With no speedo on the bike i had no idea the condition of the motor so i wanted it opened and checked. The bike was not able to be worked on for like a year by my mechanic so it sat. With too little bike to ride and too much time to miss it i started to buy crap. Bought one off stuff from Mr.T, ebay, and some other contacts so i decided to have some custom bodywork done while the motor was out and stop, yeah right. I had swapped the triples to RC51 triples frm the get go and used radial mount brake adapters on them with tokico calipers but thought the new bodywork and stuff would make the bike look to nice for the RC51 forks and triples, so Ohlins, Gilles, custom Ohlins radial brackets and of course ISR monoblocs LOL ouch! After upgrading that stuff the mag wheels just now looked off, so a call to Matsu for a a custom one off rear wheel and i think you are catching the pattern, it goes fast.

My name is Mark and i am a RC30 addict

I decided to just go crazy-ish on the bike as there are only a few left and at this pont the resale value is out the window. I want to ride and enjoy the bike not put the box on top of it. I have tried to upgrade, replace, improve on almost all of the OEM bike except for the frame and engine while still keeping the kickassness of the V4 motor. While i know there are some who have said i ruined it and changed the look, there are others who appreciate the change and work. As i mentioned B4 i intend on having a solid Billet swingarm made with a larger cut out for the tire so i don't have to shim the wheel out and or shave the rubber to stop them from rubbing and make it 10-15mm longer like the HRC version but i have to get the bike back first.
#44
Spoke with the engine builder yesterday, good news 4 me.

Kibblewhites are getting installed. the heads are about done and the motor is about done.

The bike should be getting put back together shortly here and paint to follow

One more little tidbit. I have a moriwaki RC51 rear shock link going on the RC30 as the OEM link is the same as the aftermarket RC51 mori link. Not going to do anything as the height and angles are the same but it will look nicer then the OEM cast job
#45
just found these, older pics but cool nonetheless

I am hoping improved LOL

the OEM tire on the back was 160 and i could gring the pegs without trying and i am no rossi.

I now have a proper 3.5 front (rc51) wheel compared to the OEM 3.0 so slightly slower turn in but more grip and tire choices. People say Honda perfected the bike and making the rear a 185 and stuff makes the bike handle like poo i think they are just jealous or high. I have a HRC ride height adjuster on the rear with a penske so compensate for the new 17" tire from OEM 18". The brakes and forks are great-ish on the OEM 30 but i am betting the Ohlins and monoblocs work as good or hopefuly better. I currently have a mini ISR rear caliper but i am having my own line of billet race calipers made and that will replace the ISR with a new race rotor i have had made not posted as of yet.

the biggy is the billet swingarm. the RC30 has issues with tire rub although some who don't ride their bikes will argue. the chain adjustmet area is like 2" if that and if you don't use a certain tires and or a wheel spacer the tire rubs the swingarm. I am using a 2.0mm shim and the narrowest tire and if i have to adjust the chain it will nearly rub or i can shave the rubber, hence the need for a swingarm. the new swingarm will be slightly heavier in billet but offer more chain adjustment b4 needing to remove a link as well s be deeper so i can even run a 190 tire
#48
Just remembered to add custom one off Samco hoses. I was the one to donate my hoses to them for molds

I think my guy is using silver ones not the blacks as i ordered both colors
#49
I had a custom axle built for my VFR to fit a 180 size rear. It definitely helped with tire selection!!! I'm really curious to see the finished swing-arm, as I'm sure it's going to be quite the piece of work, based off of your other items. I know you make CF parts, as I remember you from Speedzilla. One thing that I'd like to get made for my VFR is a rear sprocket carrier like to 1098/1198's have available for them from some aftermarket companies, but don't know who to contact about getting one made. Have you done any before weight measurements to compare to the after build? I've been able to shave off about 15kg from my VFR, but wouldn't mind loosing a few more. I can't imagine how light and strong the billet items will be.

I am n ot 100% sure. I know i have added some weight with certain items like the forks and brakes and maybe even the larger wheels and tires but i have lost some on the exhaust and carbon bodywork so i will have too see. I know what the bike weighed stock so i will have to go from there.

shoot me some links of pics of what you woukd like made and what you have now and i can ask my machinest to look into it OK?
#52
I am not worthy . . .

It must be a law of nature that buying the bike is just the down payment on the mods and accessories. Maybe someday someone will post pics of the rarest VFR of all - the totally stock un-molested one with all the original factory stickers on it. LOL.

Seeing projects like this helps everyone up their game by showing what's possible. Thanks for the post & especially the pics.

After taking a look at them, I'm not 100% sure that it's feasible, but here are some links anyway...

quick change http://www.ferracci....ct_detail&p=992

http://www.ducationl..._sprockets.html

Ideally what I was hoping for was something that replicates the lighter Ducati part and replaces the entire VFR cush drive/sprocket carrier. My rear axle on the sprocket side is stock, so I'm pretty sure it looks similar to your RC-30. If you think it's possible, I guess we can go from there...
#54
dougless,
those are very hot parts for sure but as a one off they will be huge money. if i can get say 6-10 wanted and some deposits i can have my machinest do them and i can get them anodized and all too. My RC30 sprocket carrier is lightweight and a similar type od design and i am told the NC30 is the same, maybe if you can use something like that you will get what you need for weight loss too?

http://fiche.ronayer...roup/REAR_WHEEL

number #7. it looks like a #1. i have thought having a billet one made of that would be cool too but the OEM part is not so heavy.

what do you think?

OH Man!!! Motorcycle Porn is not often this good. And scew anyone that is commenting on your "old" bike, this is truely a thing of beauty you have been working on

Where in the 603 are you? I am in the Lakes Region. Do you run up at Loudon? I would really like to see this bike in person... as it was being loaded onto my trailer... In the dark of night or maybe just some of those one off parts...

Seriously if you do any events at Loudon I would love to see the bike in person. I also work with Fishtail Riding School and I know this bike would be appreciated by a bunch of us. You should see some of the "old" bikes that run the squids with the R1's off the track.

If you tell me what specific parts you're looking for, I can always look at ebay.de and other local ebay sites here. A friend of mine just got a newer VFR 400 a few months ago for right around $2500.00. Parts are easier to get over here, and shipping won't cost too much because of my Military status.

Did you blast them on purpose in order to get a certain look after anodize? If not, you can save yourself some time by chemically stripping the anodize next time - leaves a nice bare metal finish behind that serves a much better base for brilliant anodize finish. And it can be done at home with a solution of Drano crystals(sodium hydroxide) and water...

I've been thinking about an NC30 drive as well, I think my Triumph axle has the same mesh and axle size as the VFR750 (can check tomorrow) but I'm not sure if the length will be enough. Douglas, I'd be willing to buy one and try it out as long as the shipping isn't too expensive.
Looks like the stock gearing for the NC30 is 40T, stock for VFR750 is 43T. Know where to source sprockets? I've found that the '93-'95 CBR900 front sprocket is the same as the VFR, maybe something like that will work out

I did it because it was convienent really as they were there. I do want a new finish on them prolly black but as you can see they are a bit textured.

Do you have any advise on how to proceed with them and what type of finish will work best?

Thanks

i had already looked at your ron ayers deal b4 i posted mine neener neener LOL. i see it is a cush type of drive correct?

be nice to get one of those in my hands a NC30 as they might be able to work or with some mods like offset and stuff. I am in for some cool parts being made and i have a handy machinest willing to do runs of 6-10

If you tell me what specific parts you're looking for, I can always look at ebay.de and other local ebay sites here. A friend of mine just got a newer VFR 400 a few months ago for right around $2500.00. Parts are easier to get over here, and shipping won't cost too much because of my Military status.

i am looking for a complete NC30 rear eccentric, carrier and the all so i can do a complete swap on the 98 VFR arm. At the same time i can check to see if the NC carrier will fit the RC spindle.

If it does i would like to move ahead and get soem neat billet carriers made that would both work for me and my VFR arm project, my RC30 and hopefully some of youz

I found this on the net some years ago...
The info on it has become very helpfull when swapping over single sided components.
AFTER 1997, the VFR rear hub/spindle used similar dimensions to the rc45. i might be wrong there, but have read before. Any chance anyone could complete this spec. list below so we can know for sure???
I now use an rc30 hub and spindle in a 94-97 vfr swingarm.
Sprockets are not a problem. Im now running a 520 chain sprocket combo. Widely available aftermarket. 525 also available from Honda if you so wish.

Honda VFR ('90-'2003+), Hawk, RC30/45, NSR250 all use the same relative rear wheel offset. i.e. mix and match wheels amongst the various models and so long as the spindle face is unmolested the wheels will remain centered.

I'm interested in this as well, I've fitted a Triumph eccentric/hub/axle and Ducati rim to my '95 and just had to get someone to trim and rethread the axle and place some spacers to align everything. The Triumph axle will work with a 4th gen VFR hub (spacing is a little different), so I bet it would work with a VFR400 as well. If I can get an NC30 or 35 hub/sprocket carrier I can put it on my project bike and tell you if it works
