No, it's the total lack of real gear. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they've got to be prepared for fighting it out with bad guys but they are much more likely to get seriously harmed in a motor vehicle accident. Although I've never been pulled over by a moto-cop, I just know I couldn't remain silent if they gave me the ol' "we're trying to keep you from hurting yourself or others" speech while writing me up.

C'mon, who doesn't already think LEO's are hypocritical? The smarter ones probably don't stage pictures of themselves doing these shenanigans, though.

At least the guy on the wrong side of the double yellow (Ponch or Jon?) is wheeling low enough that he can still see through the windscreen.

I asked the guy that ran my rider class last summer about that point; every cop on a bike I have seen rides like that. Class instructor said the training groups have send request to the police services boards and officer's unions on this topic and never get a response back.

I hear you on that one, I've never been stopped on teh bike yet (touch wood) and ya if your not getting out of the ticket, may as well speak your mind about their gear.

I would love to see some costs for Medical Treatment ect for MC Cops involved in accidents. Then estimate how much could have been saved by wearing the "right" gear.

At least a armoured jacket!!!!! Lightweight mesh like a lot of us wear in the summer!!!! our local MC Cops are wearing full face flip up helmets these days. I ahve also seen them wearing the one piece "coverall/jump suit"

Yep, it dawns on me once in awhile that I never saw the guys on CHiPs wearing riding jackets or pants.
Boots? Check.
Gloves? Check.
Sunglasses? Check.
Inadequate brain bucket? Check.
Skin-saving leathers? Not a chance.

Heck, I think there are still LEOs who don't wear seatbelts. In fact I just read an article on that. Seems seatbelts interfere with their gun belts and they feel safer NOT wearing a seatbelt in case they have to draw their weapon in a hurry. I can understand that, but they still need to wear seatbelts.

There are several police dept's across the US using proper riding gear. I know Aerostitch is one company that manufacturers specifically for the law enforcement agencies.

That's pretty cool, the more bikes I see on the road the better regardless. But I seriously doubt these guys could catch many of us in the twisties, not that I would ever run with the blue lights on, seriously!
The last VA motorcycle State Troopers I saw was a few years ago at the Bristol NASCAR race and they were on Harleys. NO sheote. I'm no Harley fan for sure but it was cool anyway, with the lights, blue silver paint scheme and all, and VA troopers are some of the best there are IMHO.

Are there a lot of other state's troopers that use Harleys?

On a side note. A female LEO, drunk, out of jurisdiction, caused an accident, IN HER PATROL CAR, in front of my workplace, Mon. morning. Critically injuring a motorest, when she hit said motorest's V.W. head on, in the oncoming lane.

Nice. Paid leave, till, they sort it out. If it were you or I, STRAIGHT TO PRISON.

I think the better explanation on why the Motorleos do not wear too much protective gear is because most of these guys come for the HD culture, (You know, the guys with the beanie helmets, black t-shirts, fringed leather vests, Levis and steel toed Red Wings) as a lot of them still drive and I guess, enjoy using HDs to patrol in.
Minds should be changing on this soon though, as the California and other Highway Patrols have now mostly switched over to the BMWs. I noticed some local talk about the CHiPs at least considering more protective gear as standard in the future. The hot California weather does not help either. Imagine being geared up for a whole 8 hours a day all year. The possibility of heat stroke is really there if they are not careful.

I think they could catch us. What those dudes have to go through to get on the Moto Patrol is amazing. They practice at a stadium near my house. I bet everyone of them would put the hurt on dang near all of us.

Well, at least they would catch me, afterall, I am the capt of Granny's racing team.

In my observation of the Cop Track Days, it seems most Portland area forces use BMWs. Some use Harley and a growing number are on ST1300's.

(IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/+1.gif) I think that is one sweet pic! The advanced MSF Course that I took in San Diego in 1985 was taught by a 27 year veteran of the CHP, 25 years on bikes. He had trained M/C police in 11 different countries including Saudi Arabia and much of Europe.

That old fart was a Hell of a Rider and I learned more from him in 3 days than my accumulated knowledge of street and trail riding during the previous 11 years.

They don't CARE if they drop them because they don't own them and won't have to pay to have them fixed. They are owned by their constituents. NO, I don't like LEO in general because there is too high a population of asses in that profession. It is what it is and that is stupidity of two LEO's proving it on the internet. Happy New Year.... I don't know about state troopers, but a number of the cities do - including SF, and Boulder, CO.

Couriers ride for living. I know I was one, and logged way more miles than any motor officer. Motor officers spend more time of the bikes and sitting on their bikes than they do riding them. I should know, I used to chat while waiting for a call with the CHP guys that would get their warranty work done at the BMW dealer in Hollywood.

I'd always give them crap about gear, and they's always have a lame excuse that I could cut through like butter. Eventually a few would crack and admit that they are woefully underprotected and it's a uniform and they have to wear it. Change happens at a glacial pace at police departments unless it has to do with some spotlight grabbing issue. So that's why they are still wearing boots that seem more aproprioate riding a horse, deerskin gloves that tear like paper, wool pants, and open face helmets.

What I wanna know is what's up with the mustasches? So many have them have them, some weird bike cop thing. Total mystery to me.
