Well I've been searching for an online source for tempur (or similar) foam. Most of what I've found has been for beds (too soft and too large) or for wheelchairs (cover included, don't need it) Sooooo.....can anybody recommend a place to get the stuff?

How to get your foam cheaply in three easy steps:
1. Get a wheelchair with said foam cushions.
2. Take the foam, replace it with crappy foam.
3. Sell wheelchair to Dude.

I spent quite a bit of time searching for exactly what you are--a smallish piece of Tempur. There WAS a company that sold it in various small sizes and it was mentioned here under the "Titanium Butt" thread, but they have since stopped selling it.
Your best bet really is the wheelchair pad. Really.

THIS(clicky here) at Aircraft Spruce. It is billed as a TemperFoam developed for the space program. I have sat in aircraft seats crafted from this foam and they are very comfortable for extended periods. But keep in mind that seat crafting is an art few will master.

I can save you some trouble for I've experimented with 3 different Temper Foam seats and you want to build yours out of a 3 inch thick T-47 Extra Firm Green Temper Foam... Aircraft Spruce only sells T41 Firm Blue Temper Foam...

My wife has a seat cushion she uses in the car and takes everywhere. It has viscoelastic foam in it and I think she got it from a local back store.

Talk to MotoRob!! I just went riding with him and he is building a seat. It is somethin I tell ya!! It has mulitple layers of foam with a layer of gell stuff. Pretty awesome if you ask me. He is still shaving here and there but it is built-up very nicely for legroom as he is a very tall dude (gotta be like 6'-6" or so). Felt real nice. Also seemed to eliminate the ball crushing tendency of the stocker. He said he used a electric carving knife (as I guess is common with seat builders). He did mention some of it was from a wheelchair seat, but there was other stuff on it.

I gotta admit, out of the 15-20 bikes I sat on at the Moto show, the Aprilias' were by far the most torturous things I have ever experienced since my FZ600!! It wasn't even comfortable for 10 seconds!!!

i hope you were kidding! smile.gif they are know for their relaxed riding position compared to the japanese sport bikes and the other italian brands. my riding position isnt far off the VFR.....and no peg blocks needed thank you. 6'3" and quite happy. cant see why so many people havent adapted to the VFR rolleyes.gif

There is a place* nearby (40 minutes away) that sells this stuff in bulk. It was in stock the last time I looked. IIRC, they will cut this up into whatever size you'd like [fixed thickness, but the area can vary] - certainly they do it with all the other foam they sell.

I used my mini Dotco with 3 inch paper 80 grit... the trick is to easy shaping is to first get the foam nice and hard in the refrigerator...

Pink (soft) Blue (medium) Green (hard)... this approach doesn't produce the same comfort level on a motorcycle seat because we have our butt area impacting the seat whereas an aircraft seat has the combined area of leg butt and back...

Agreed, the seating position in an aircraft seat is completely different than it would be astride a bike.
But he was looking for suppliers of TempurFoam and this was all I knew of. It is good that you knew of another supplier with a more dense foam.
Talked to my buddy tonite who is a rep for 3 different foam companies and a glue company too. He can get it if it's made. He's gonna get me a trunkload of samples in various densities and thicknesses.

In all seriousness, had I realized your intentions with this thread, I would have stated that you would need a denser foam, (as a core). And so-on-and so-forth.
Something to keep in mind, a heavier rider might perfer a firmer seat compaired to a lighter rider. This would explain why some love the Corbin seat, and others hate it (I am in the later catagory, probably since I only weigh 170 lbs.). Additionally, some may feel comfortable initially, but still burn on a long ride. On the hole 491.gif , I think firmer is better for longer riding, just not rock hard.
