If you haven't done so, or moved and need to update your location (VFRnGTP), make sure you check your map location.

1) Go to http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?act=gmap

2) Click "My Location" at the top to open the new window

3) Scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN and click on "Quick Search"

4) When window opens, type in you address OR ZIP code OR city (Note: if you don't want the coordinates to focus on your exact address, just type in your ZIP or City/State.) and hit "Search"

5) Use the Longitude Box and Latitude Box to Copy into the VFRd map (Note: It may not be the most accurate spot) and Click "Save Location"

Hope this helps in locating other VFR guys in your area

Been ther just done that..

Hell, guys don't even put their location in their Profile info....so phat chance they'll do the Map thingy.

I still think Profile location and type of VFR should be mandatory.....give everybody 30 days or their password dies. To log back in, they'd have to complete those two fields. Of course, I'm spouting all this site management stuff like I know what I'm talking about, which I'm absolutely sure that I don't. But I'll bet $50 that our 9800-strong membership would drop to 1700 real quick. The $50 would be a VFRD contribution, in the name of Enzed Viffer.

I agree....even started a long thread about it a good while back. Especially location would be nice. Makes it a lot easier for meeting up for area rides if you know they exist..................................... dry.gif

Woah... that is a cool feature!

Done!
#6
Started beating the location drum and forgot......I'm already in the middle of that Tennessee cluster on the map.......mine is the one with the halo above it in that group of rowdy "bikers"................................. tongue.gif

That is a cool feature. The quick finder screen that pops up has the lat. & long. reversed tho.

Egg-Zakly!! fing02.gif fing02.gif

So....that must mean that most of the 9800 members DON'T want to meet up for rides, correct? Well then, hell with 'em!! wink.gif

Sweet..never even realized that existed.
Updated....I think.
Went back to check to make sure mine took, but I see no pretty little VFR icon smack dab in the middle of GA? Sure, bunch of 'em up in ATL, but not mine. Can I just not see mine own, or am I being retarded again?
And yes, I checked to make sure my Lat. and Long. were straight.

Yours is in antartica! goofy.gif heh

you can click on mine or any user name in the topic a dropdown menu will appear, in it you can see "find members map" click it and it will got to where they are on the map, or just an empty map if they did not use it! You can do this for yourself if you entered the coordinates. There is all sorts of stuff in those drop downs, find blogs, find gallerys, find posts, find topics and so on! Also when you click the username to visit a member profile there is also a link to" find me on the map" there too! rolleyes.gif

and yes I did have the box labels reversed, fixed that now! sorry thats probably why your in antartica! heh! rolleyes.gif

I feel like Steve Martin in the movie "The Jerk" when he gets the new White Pages and he runs around screaming "I'm in the Book, I'm in the Book!!!" I feel like running around screaming "I'm on the map, I'm on the map". Thanks.....also all of my personal info is in my profile...so I'm in on that end as well. fing02.gif

I am working on adding EVENTS to the map as well! This will be done when entering calender events and will cooincide with a placemark on the map! I have been testing it and it works, just need to figure out how to make an input box for it in the "add event" screen

Check it out here all the events I made! the pop up maps are wrong yet - they need to be fixed! its a work in progress!

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.p...;code=allevents

or individual events - here is the cycle world show in Chicago

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.p...event&st=60

it will be cool when your posting a ride and need a map for the starting point!

Thank you for getting that straightened out Slammer.

I am slightly dyslexic if you can tell!

ok, I'm feeling a little stooopid here... shouldn't I see a map w/ all the members that are pinned on it, when I use the link PhatPat posted at the top (which I'm guessing is the same as the map tab on the main page)? All I get is an empty box where I think a map should be.. I CAN see individual pins if I go through profiles, but that's it.. what am I missing?

Looks liek you are missing a browser plug-in to display the map.
Download and install the latest version of your browser.
If it is IE, clicky HERE
#24
I'm on IE6 (work machine) and it's got all the current updates (and they haven't approved IE7 yet). Like I mentioned, I can see individual pinnings no problem, so I don't think it's a plug-in issue.. Just would be helpful to see all pinned members so I can see who's close.

I'm surprised we have no documented VFR's in the 4 state "Big Sky" area...Are they all in some sect compound up there ? Or do they just not wish to share the road with a douchebag like Janklow ...

Very Nice. Done

Done too. For security reasons, I used my office postal code where my bike is never parked. Wouldn't want to let everyone know where I keep the beast.

There is hope yet. Actually I was hoping that we could get a icon group like they have on SportTouring.Net

it is quite extensive and fun to use.

finished adding the event map modual, its all custom vfrd only exclusive map stuff I made heh - fricken genius (sombody besides me wanna help me out and second that) . When you put an event in one of the calenders it has a box for map coordinates, an all-in-one box (makes it easier to code, I dont have to split it up in long & lat and do 20 lines of splitting code mumbo jumbo) its just both coords with a comma in between in decimal format. I have a line for it in the geocoder tool!

I also put a button below the box to open up the geocoder map tool I made, same one as the "my location" uses. You just type in the address or the zip and google will spit out the coordinates, it uses google maps to find the coordinates, makes sense since the maps are also google maps! sometimes it puts the pin a bit away from the actual address, but close! I wouldnt use it for programming a cruise missle by any means! Its accurate somewhat but not 100%.

I am trying to figure out how to embed google maps into posts and such to easily add a small map to a post or an event, havent been sucessful yet but I get a mean looking space where the map should be! I am good at making spaces now! I love maps, maps show me places where I can ride!

Oh one more thing, coordinates for google maps are in decimal degree format - that is ONE decimal for latitude and longitude no decimals for minutes and seconds.

FORMAT THAT WORKS
DD Decimal Degree (49.500,-123.500)

FORMATS THAT DONT WORK
other formats with decimal type rendering stil use minutes and seconds not digits
DM Degree:Minute (49:30.0,-123:30.0)
DMS Degree:Minute:Second (49:30:00,-123:30:00)

as far as adding different pins that should not be too hard to concieve just time consuming on my part adding code for each pin - a new database table for the different pins, a menu to select them and actually making the pins, small - changing the colors, different generation bikes. Thats somting I am not so good at I am not a graphic artists, it requires two images one for the bike and one for the shadow! Any takers here who like doing that sort of grueling image manipulation crap?

here is a tutorial if your interested in making a bunch of vfr pins!
