Paint Matching - Colorite Or Hondaline

Decided to stop and put on a warmer set of gloves this morning on a seemingly level secondary road and watched in horror as the bike slowly rolled off the stand and layed over. Damage is cosmetic and limited to the hard bag. Will the '03 silver match better with colorite or should I go with Hondaline? Colorite offers an aerosol but I'm very leery of going that route. Thoughts? unsure.gif

I did my bags and some spots on the bike with Colorite. I was using Italian Red, so your results may differ with silver.

The color match was pretty good, but no matter how much I buffed/polished/wet sanded Ijust couldn't get that glossy shine that the original paint has. The first bag I just taped off the area I wanted to paint, and there is a definate "line" between the original and newly painted, even though the color matched, because of the glossy shine of the original. For my other bag I just taped off the reflector and painted the whole thing. Looks a little better than the left bag.

Spots on the bike are the same (lack of glossy shine), but less noticeable as I tried to only tape where there were 'natural' breaks, and tried to 'feather' the paint where I had room.

So in short, Colorite color match good, but almost impossible (for me anyway, but I'm a novice at this) to match the finish.

I had pics but can't seem to get my computer to recognize my memory stick.

Edit: Forgot to add - I was using the aerosol paint with aerosol clear coat after.

Since someone brought this issue up, I also have some scratches (driveway tipover) on my lower left fairing. Do you guys think a clear coat might be necessary to get the proper shine? huh.gif I know the tank is clear coated because the Honda wings are under it.

The problem with the silver is that it is very, very bright!! If you are not careful with repairs, it look white and not silver... so I would go with Honda's paint!! It is probable more expensive... but that is what I would do! Hope this helps!!

I am no paint expert but I think without the clear coat, the paint would look dull and unfinished!! The only reason I say this, is because of a past experience with my father-in-law trying this on his BMW and it looked pretty bad when he was done (with no clear coat)!!

This isn't quite how to match paint, but............

I saw pictures somewhere of bags that were painted with something like pickup truck bed liner. The pictures looked pretty good.

Colorwrong silver, is closer than there red. Really depends on how much you want to spend. Regardless, paint the entire bag. (Outter half).

Lefty...sorry to hear about the drop...but at least now you'll have it out of your system. And don't worry...the sick feeling goes away ina few weeks.

(I was going to play hooky one day last spring and dropped my yellow one right on my toes!!!)

I would just touch it up with a brush in the spots that are scratched. It is not going to look great, but neither is painting with aerosol cans. If you want it to look good, either replace the piece with a new one, or have it sprayed with catalyzed paint plus a clear coat in a spray booth.
