As I was leaving work in Van Nuys yesterday on my way back to Pasadena (about 30 miles) I noticed my trip odometer was at 185 miles, and my fuel light was flashing so it was time to fill up before I got on the freeway...
Anyway apparently my mind was elsewhere, because as I pulled into my driveway at home I noticed there was a little blinking light on my dash which confused me at first and then I thought OH **$#!!
So I now know that I can go 216 miles on a tank of gas under normal commuting conditions (quick starts from stoplights but not redlining, cruising in 6th on the freeway, and occasionally down shifting to pass). How much farther I can go on a tank of gas I'm not entirely sure, and I hope not to find out. I haven't filled up yet but fortunately there is gas station very close by.
As a side note, I've been riding for 16 years and this is the first time I've ever done something like that.
So what is the farthest any of you have gone on a tank of gas? Or better yet have you done what I almost did and completely run out of gas because you forgot to refuel?

I went about that far once and I don't think you'll want to push it much more than that. I was near Iroqouis Falls Ontario and they don't have a Shell on every corner up there. I was convinced I was going to run out of gas. I had to run into a bar and ask for directions to the nearest station.
Funny though...they had PLENTY of beer!
Usually 30-35 miles once it starts flashing. I'd say your on fumes, now.
I've heard of 250 km.
Mine's in miles and I have pushed it at times, getting up to 190 miles. Don't recall ever seeing 200 miles. The other day I filled up after pushing the limit and squeezed 20 � worth of fuel into the tank. I had never got more than 18.50 � in there before. Gas is worth just over 1.00 � per litre over here. I sure as hell notice the difference in corner handling between a full and an (almost) empty tank!!!
Well Yesterday on the way to work I needed to stop I was at 205 Miles and put in 4.734 gallons. I have gone to 220 once, I knew I needed to stop but spaced it and continued on I thought I would be pushing it home but made to the station. Now I try to keep it below 210 Miles between fill ups I commute mostly highway miles at about 75 mph.

I've run many miles with the Flashing Red fuel bar blinking and have always seemed to have at least a Gal. of fuel left in the tank. Holds 5.8 gal.
I'm sure bikes will very on both the gauge accuracy and mpg so test it several times and see how far you can go so you'll have an idea in an emergency situation. :thumbsup: Just carry a 1 gal. can on the big and see how far it will go! :rolleyes:
I think it varies from one bike to the next.
I went 52 miles, 2 up, with the light flashing. When we stopped to get gas it only took 5.0 gallons. Does that mean I could go another 40 miles? That is the longest distance I went with the light on. I would say my system is very inaccurate. I can fill it to the rim on the c-stnd and the gauge will drop one bar in the first 2 miles.
During my 2006 Sierra Trip, I pegged 242 miles on a tank. Being on unfamiliar roads breeds caution and less wrist turning. I have to believe if I was in Colorado (even higher) I could do better still.

High altitude helps along with a steady hand. Winter gas blends usually lead to less mileage.
I've been guilty of pushing my luck quite a few times: my record is 425km without running out. But this isn't the norm. Usually the light starts flashing around 300 km and can easily add 60 without being careful or 80 if I keep it off the vtec.
I have been wondering the same.. I tried pushing it at least I thougt I did. 188 miles twice and it still only takes 4.5 gallons to fill up. So I would say in a bad situation I could get around 220 out of it.

Nope. From Kelowna to Abbotsford by Kamloops. Was with a friend who wasn't very fast so the vtec hardly kicked in at all. 6th gear 120/km - steady. Just before, we had to stop and I did 390 with the light flashing for close to a 100km . . . couldn't find a freaggin gas station. Next stop 425 km. If I remember well, it took less gas than when I stopped at 390.
So I just took the bike out to have a new front tire put on, and coaxed it to the nearest gas station imagining the entire time that the bike would run out of fuel a couple hundred feet down the road. Anyway I filled up and that was not far from the truth as I put 5.6 gallons of gas in the tank! I don't know what the fuel pickup looks like inside the tank (if it's actually capable of using the entire tanks worth of gas) but I'm guessing .2 gallons would not have propelled me much further.
Some quick math shows that I was getting 38 mpg... that's really not very good. During the break in period I know it was getting around 45 mpg with being really easy on the throttle. I haven't calculated mileage recently but I have to say I'm rather disappointed. I figured it was getting that kind of mileage when wringing the bike out in the twisties, but I was hoping to do much better during my commute.
Oh well, I still love the bike and it's a heck of a lot better than the 12 mpg my truck was getting.
Tank is 5.8gal, right? I filled up within 10 miles of the light flashing and it took 4.6 gal.
Yeh once the light starts flashing you have a good 40 miles left

Cal gas is not very good, I hear 20% mpg loss in some areas. I run 100 mph twisties and stuff , get around 42/43, in the heat of the summer I've seen 45/47. But I've never done a full interstate run , I'd expect near 50mpg
how many miles do you have, wouldnt expect more than upper 30's during breakin or a few thousand miles

I have a little less than 12,000 miles on the bike. I do run into the vtec fairly often when passing on the freeway however I was really expecting more to get the kind of mileage you're seeing.
Man, my bike is sucking for fuel mileage right now....165 miles is 5.0 gallons. I need to check it out I guess....sheesh
I hit 404km last summer on mine and it took 20.5L to fill it back up. Most times the light starts to flash around the 320km mark. And thats slab riding around 130km/h back and forth to work.
I like to work out my milage when ever I can remeber to write it down and in theory my VFR should go 440km on a 22L tank of fuel.

In the summer, about 190 miles when the light starts flashing. In the winter, maybe 160-170 and the light flashes. I probably ride like a pansy compared to most of you guys though... WINTER GAS SUCKS!!!
I too have had 408 kls out of a tank and from memory it took 20.4 litres to fill. That is about 255 miles for 5.36 us gallons. I live on flat country and all miles were very sedate, no two up and no WOT. Maximum speed was 100 k.p.h.
When I get out of town on the country back roads the mileage comes way down.
I have never run it dry to see just how much fuel it will take but 20.4 was the most it has ever taken. Has anyone ever tried this exercise, that is drain the tank and refill it to see how much actually fits in it?
I got over 210 miles from a mostly-full tank during a trip last year, and that was all freeway miles but with a loaded-down bike (me, soft bags packed, etc.)

Anything wrong with this? I know in a car if you run her out of gas you can sometimes seize up the fuel pump. I'd like to take my bike to at least 200 miles on the tank... it will probably start flashing at 150 - 170 ish. I don't want to mess up anything with the F.I. (first bike with F.I.)

Agreed. I never run that risk.
I have seen 200 miles several times and still had a bit in the tank at fill up. I have often thought of packing a small 1 gallon can in a saddle bag or trunk and finding out just how far I could really go before flame out. The only worry there is that I'll run out either in traffic or in an unsafe spot to coast to the roadside. Maybe someday on a long interstate run with a steady throttle to help boost the mileage as well.
This morning I ran another 40 miles after the Flashing Red light started and filled the tank. It took 4.89 gals. so there was still a gal. in the tank. :fing02:
I took the FI out today after MotoGP for a 4.5 hour trip. One hour in total of highway time and the rest was like this:

On the way back, when the last block started to blink I set the tripmeter and decied at 20 miles to fill up... I've been told that 30 miles is a safe bet... but BR has demonstrated that 40 is possible!!
I checked the air filter before taking off and it didn't look at all clean, there were even a few small feather stuck in the pleats. The area corresponding to the two rear cylinders looked excessively oily:

I removed it and blew it out. I'm wondering if it can be cleaned... I believe it's the OEM filter...
On removing it I discovered the rear right-hand air intake has been spitting oil out...

I hate to hijack the thread but can you guys explain what's up here and what to do about it? Doesn't look right to me!! Oh yeah, and at the front of the black casing the filter fits onto there is a forward facing and slightly downward trning snorkel-type vent... should this have some sort of filter?? As mine was completely void... :S
I usually get around 36-38 mpg during my normal riding; sometimes up to 40 if I'm taking it easy. Yesterday I had to ride from Austin back to Fort Worth--206 miles, all freeway. Cruising speeds varied from 80 to 100, never leaving 6th gear. 4.282 gallons when I filled up afterwards, for 48.1 mpg. That's 7 mpg better then I've ever done before, even before the PCIII.
Well after joining the VFRD a few months ago to aid with my valve adjustment I'm finally going to throw in my two cents!!
My best mileage on a full tank was 257 miles. After a fill up, to full 5.8 gallon capacity I figured that I had approximately .4 of a gallon left...surely enough to go a few more miles. :fing02:
I have been riding street bikes now for 15 years and I always think that you should know how far your machine is capable of going. Once you know you can utilize your "reserve" and perhaps not worry so much if you'll make it to the next gas station!
I have an 04 vfr and the reserve seems to be very conservative, so if you always fill up as soon as the light comes on, you should never have to worry, but in that rare situation when your 40 miles deep on your flashing light, and still looking for a gas station, you'll probably be sweatin it out!!!
ps. on that 257 mile day, I was actually only going 55ish!
WOW I've just got back fromn my trip to Wales and on the way there I got 195 miles before the reserve flash kicked in :biggrin:
