the 84-85 bikes has a fuel pump, and the supply hoses are slightly smaller from the petcock. in addition the 84-85 carbs are larger diameter, i have read

will the 84-85 carbs work on the 1986 model if the fuel lines from the 86 are used?

That is the setup I have on my race bike.
84-85 carbs on an 86 engine.
No problems at all, regardless of how full the tank is (and I routinely ran it quite low down into reserve to save weight.) I never experienced anything that felt like I was starving for fuel, including very long straights at WOT.
I just plugged half of the splitter that used to run to the 86 carbs (dual feed) and ran the remaining one to the fuel feed on the left of the carbs on the 84-85.
You can also experiment with the different airboxes. The 84-85 is bigger, it droops down around the cooling fan. I ended up using the 86 airbox to facilitate air flow (I also removed the fan).
