Rear Wheel

I couldnt find anything on a search so..

I took my rear wheel off and 2 of the lug nut studs have this white powdery stuff on them.i looked on the internet and its call "white rust" caused from the zinc coating oxidising.anyone else seen this stuff and is somthing i should be concerned about?i cleaned as much as i could and put antisieze on it.

What u did is probably fine!!

If your axle looks like this then it is suffering the effects of corrosion... mainly due to riding in the rain
and hitting your prize with a garden hose... both acts abuse a bike because it promotes corrosion in all
the little nooks and crannies... Pat lives in California and doesn't rain ride at all but just look at his RC30
axle after repeated sprays with the garden hose... pitfull as the metal is etched for life... BTW you might
wish to pull the axle and check the sprocket side as well... the cush drive is another moisture trap...

yea i never ride in the rain but wash it with the hose.it doesnt bother me only if its going to make somthing fail dangerously.

I would not use antisieze on lugnuts
clean threads with wirebrush and wd-40

By definition corrosion is the break down of essential properties of strenght in a metal due to the chemical
reactions with moisture... basically if a VFR axle is going to fail then one with corrosion will fail first...

i only put antisieze on the part that had the white stuff on it.you could tell how far the lug nuts thread onto the bolts so i didnt put it their.

Because you'll overtorque the lug nuts. The manufacturer's torque specification (80 lb-ft for VFR) is for clean, dry fittings.

Do a web search for "dry torque". You'll see that torque spec's are generally given for "dry" threads and must be reduced for "lubricated" threads.

Wow... A little overboard if you ask me... I could see if you are tightening head bolts or more sensitive parts that require clearances, but for lugs and the such... I believe it will be just fine!!

Agreed. I didn't mean to imply that the wheel would implode or spin off on the road if you greased the lug nuts. I was just talking about torque spec's in general.

Antisieze or loctite or whatever you want to put on your bolts will not hurt anything. Just subtract 10% for the specified torque numbers in the manual and you will be fine.

I've been properly trained on dry versus wet torque so I'm well aware of the differences... I want to
read the warning where Honda states dry torque only for the lug nuts...

Easy guy! No disrespect was implied or intended. I'm not a mechanic, just a retired computer programmer.
I never said that there was a specific warning about dry torque only for lug nuts.
My copy of Honda's "Common Service Manual" has this to say on page 1-14 of "General Information":

"It is important to oil the threads of specific fasteners when instructed to do so in the Model Specific manual. Oiling the threads of these fasteners ensures stable fastening tension in critical areas. No other bolts besides those specifically pointed out in the Model Specific service manual text require oil on their threads".

I think this is starting to turn into an oil thread :-)

Agreed! Loctite should most definitely probably never be used on lug nuts (or lug bolts if you have those on your car).

Be aware that Loctite is a brand name (not a product) and they make many different chemicals. The original poster may have been refering to Loctite "Anti-Sieze" compound, or Loctite "Threadlocker", or Loctite "Thread Sealant". Who knows?

The point I am trying to make is that Loctite is very generic, due to the scope of the Henkel corporation. To say Loctite is not the same as saying "Threadlocker".
