I purchased a 2002/ABS with really low miles. All the recalls have been done, including a new alternator. It's pristine. I don't have any pictures because it is being shipped to me. Maybe it will show next week.
In my research the poor little VFR takes quite a beating so let me share what came before it just to prove that discriminating riders still buy this bike! :)
I've owned:
03 FZ1
05 FJR1300
06 GSX-R1000 - This bike was truly faster than light but what do you do with all that power? It really wasn't fun after the first 30 minutes of any ride.
And I currently own a KTM 990. I hope the VFR will make a great stable mate.
I'm excited. I hope the low miles won't be an issue.

Can I ask what you paid and how many miles? Any *FARKLES* on it?
Welcome to the club. I think you will enjoy it . I love my 99. Also post up some pics of the KTM also... I really like those too.
Welcome fellow rider. I've got an 03' and am lovin' it. I'm curious if why you let go of the FJR if indeed you did. Is the VFR to supplant it?
Welcome as well! You will no doubt enjoy the VFR. I purchased an 07 VFR800 about 1 month ago and it is exactly what I hoped - a very well rounded bike that can be both sporting and comfortable on an all day ride. A great group here. Enjoy and oh, BTW, it is not real until you post pics! LOL

FINALLY! :excl:
Between here and STN.com I was about to go off on you non-committal ass!
I bought my first vtec on ebay, 900 miles away, and had to truck it home since it was a wrecked salvage unit. yeah, big gamble but I fixed it up and put many, many happy miles on her.
Good luck.
Welcome to the VFRs. I have also had an FJR1300 and an ST1300, but so far like the VFR over both.
Congrats on your VFR! :)
I've loved the 990 since I first saw it at the Cycle World show a couple years ago. If I could choose one naked sportbike to own, that would be the one. :fing02:
Way to go Idaho! I've often thought of getting a sportier bike but keep coming back to my 98. VFR's are good all day rides. I'm always the guy who is thinking why are we stopping? When riding with the pure sportbike crowd. Sixth gen. VFR's are as sporty as I'd like to see the Interceptors get. All it needs is a bump up in displacement now and then.

Well that's a good question and a long story. It's the GSX-R's fault.
My wife bought me the 990 so I decided to sell the FJR which was one of the dumbest things I've done because they are great bikes. So that left me this summer with the 990 which I love, and it tours and handles very well but I kind of want to save the miles and maintenance for multi-surface trips if that makes sense.
I'm glad I've been able to try some different things and that's what makes it a fun hobby. :)
It's the 990 Adventure. Some of the best days on a motorcycle have been on this bike. They are fantastic.

Heh heh heh, I am sometimes slow to decide. :)
Also is there an oil changing thread pinned somewhere or is it a no brainer on the VFR?

Here's one thread that I found giving some info but for the most part it's super easy. Aluminum foil over the headers to redirect the oil filter oil helps keep the mess to a minimum.
Oh yeah....congrats!
Hey thanks everyone!
So damn, I was just reading up in the wiring and recall threads. My head hurts.
The recalls have been performed on this bike I bought as well as a new alternator and battery. Am I to understand that even after the recall there are still ugly problems? Shit. I don't know much about electrical stuff I make software for a living. :)
Someone just tell me it will be OK.
Welcome to the group.
This season is pretty much over for us, but next season we will have to get some rides in.
If you are going to the Colorado meet next August, we'll meet up and go.

Thanks. Yeah I may ride over there depending on how much vacation time I have. It looks like I'll have the bike for it. :)

Seriously tho, electrical gremlins can obviously be a pain, but it's one of the very few issues with VFRs. And if you're a decent mechanic they're not usually too tough to figure out. Of course, this forum helps quite a bit, too. There aren't too many issues that pop up that haven't already been addressed here.
Your bike will probably be fine. Just do a search or give a shout here if something comes up. Many folks here know these bikes better than any dealer shop ever will. :fing02:
Congrats and do post up pics when you get the bike. Should make a great stable mate IMO.
XLR8, you forgot all about your Husky 610 when listing previous rides.
You do realize we'll have to swap bikes now, so we each can see what we're missing.
Is it there yet?

Yeah but mine will have the evil V-Tec! :) Actually don't think it will bother me. The FZ1 used to hit hard at 7K. You had better be holding on as it was pretty violent.
It's not here yet. It's still at the seller's awaiting pick up. I'd like to get it in time to change the oil before this weekend but I don't think it will make it in time.
Welcome to the club XLR8. Yup. It's me Rogue.
I don't know much about the early model recall details except that they are electrical in nature. I figure if the recall was done, any issues shouldn't crop up. As for the VTEC engagement issues other people like to complain about, I am told the problem is usually rider not bike. If you remember Viffer Vern from ST.net, he told me the VTEC engagement strength/feel depends upon throttle position and gear. A hamfisted rider will get the VTEC to engage abruptly. But a smooth rider will get it to engage smoothly. Those riders who are capable of adopting to different machines will have no issues whatsoever. But riders who can't handle change very well, will have problems. I have only owned a 6th generation for less than 6 months. I can tell you that the VTEC has never been an issue. Even when I'm riding in low gear and tight twisties, it's not a problem I've always been smooth with the throttle anyway so maybe that's why. I mean, I can go from one extreme to another (Buell to VFR) and make that transition smoothly so that could be an indication.
There is one thing my 6th generation does that I don't like. That's the lean condition at small and steady throttle openings from 4k RPM to 6k RPM. I'm sure this has been discussed to death here. It basically is an ECM driven issue. The end result is a surging condition that manifests itself at steady state cruising or right before the VTEC engages. It is not debilitating or anything. But it can irritate some. There are several work-arounds to it. Some cheap, some expensive. The most expensive is to simply slip in a power commander. I'm leaning towards this some time in the future as my '01 VFR800 (God rest its soul) had a power commander and that bike had throttle response that was as smooth as Goats Cheese/cream pudding/Haagen Daz ice cream/a prom Queen's.....well you get my drift!
Looking forward to seeing your '02.

Hey Rogue!
Well still waiting on the bike. I got the keys and title though! Thanks for the info on V-Tec. I'm not sweating it. I am more concerned about electrical gremlins although it has had the recalls, a new alternator and a new battery. Hopefully it will be good.

Sorry, some of you guys from ST.N have to put up with me here too. :)
I had my first couple rides over the last week or so. Wow. I absolutely love the engine. It's nice, smooth and has plenty of power which is something I was concerned about after owning some bigger bikes. There is something about the engine that's very pleasing. That's the only way I can describe it.
And V-Tec ... I don't get all the drama over it. Sure it's not needed but it's there. It's a non issue for me. To tell you the truth my FZ1 had a much bigger hit at 7K than V-Tec does. I was kind of let down at first but after playing with it it's kind of fun.
I'm really pleased with my choice. I think the VFR is a very classy machine even my today's standards. It's still a very relevant design. Anyone on the fence about this machine, just try one. You will probably like it...a lot.
I took a few pics over the last week

I love love love the color scheme of that '02. Red with black wheels... So Sweeeeeet! It's nice to hear that you like the VFR over the FJ1300... I've contiplated the FJ... but I believe the VFR is far superior of a ride for what I want.
Congrats! on your first VFR! I have a 1991 (3rd Gen) and I love the chit out of it ;)
d
Well now you know what the BEST bike is
I wanted a VFR for A LONG time... basically every time they came out with the newer model I wanted one of those..
Maybe before I die they will actually MAKE a 7th gen... I might actually have to buy something new if they do.... I have an aversion to buying new things ;)
Enjoy the VFR :fing02:
Silver is faster :goofy:
