Well, I finally got my recall work done. They replaced the front and main harness as well as the R/R and stator. Once I got it home, I started the tear down to check their work. It wasn't bad, but there was a definite lack of attention to detail. some relays just laying around and some screws in the wrong positions.
I also removed the PAIR valve & EVAP canister as well as the associated plumbing & wiring.
I swapped out the front CCT, but there was a small problem. The metal cap did not come out with the CCT. I did not remove the throttle body, so there was some pushing and pulling to get the thing out. Otherwise, it was a piece of cake. The bike is running great and I haven't heard anything rattling around. I'll probably change out the rear CCT next weekend.
Is it possible for the metal cap on the CCT to fall down into the oil pan? Hopefully that is it's new home.

sure its possible but its the front cct so the cap would most likely have fallen off onto the floor. I mean it would be a trick to fall up and backwards into the engine. I would sweep up your work area and find it for sure - just to make damn sure. If you cant find it I guess you should look into draining the oil, taking off the header and removing the oil pan. If that thing gets stuck in the cam chain or gets wedged where it can damage your engine - well. FIND IT.
This just happened to Rice, he also did the replace and his cap fell off into the motor! Don't start the bike again until you find it!!

I've had a chance to give it a lot of thought and considering the size of the cap, I don't think it has any chance of ending up in the oil pan :( .
The fact that it stayed right there, close to the top end after I've dropped it at least 3 times while trying to retrieve it speaks in support of my guess.
Again, if you have not yet started the engine, DONT! Buy a flexible magnetic pick-up tool and fish it out. Otherwise, I would remove the front head and find the darn thing. If you don't you can lose an engine.

HS, dreadfully the front CTT is on the back side of the cyl. bank and the Cap would fall into the engine. We only wish it couldn't fall off into the engine! :blink:

Someone recently had the same thing happen when he removed his CCT. He was able to fish it out with a magnetic tipped probe. He noted that it's all blind work looking for it and that it was mostly luck that he was able to find it with the magnet.

Thanks for the advise. I didn't feel lucky, but so far I have been. The bike was a rattling noisy beast, but now it's running smooth and quiet. I put it all back together and pushed the starter button. Started right up with no problems. Over 60 miles so far and running great.
It's my only mode of transportation, so there was no chance of going to the store for a magnet. I have one, but it's 1400 miles away. Trust me, a flexible magnet was the first thing on my mind after the cussing died down. It was the same rubber tube that wrapped around the CCT that got me.
I think we know why the manual tells you to take all that stuff off! I am NOT looking forward to this myself.
