I bought a set of large baffles with my pipes, and they sound better than the stock spuds, but still a little too quiet. Anyway, just wanted to get a consensus :blush:

There was a recent thread concerning outlawing aftermarket and loud pipes. The consensus of those that posted appeared to be we need to police ourselves before the Government passes blind, broad laws that effect all of us.
My vote: Stock Spuds!!!
I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I think I might be digging a hole here.
I was wondering if anyone has done any dyno runs with the baffles in vs. the baffles out.
I run Staintunes on both my VFR and my KTM Duke II. I had access to a portable dyno at a rally a year ago. I normally run my Duke with the baffles in. I peaked out at 53 hp. I took the baffles out and my peak HP dropped to 48 HP.
Wonder if it would have a similar effect on the VFR's. I've been wanting to do a comparison of Coyze's map with and without baffles vs. Tinymind's map with and without baffles just to see.
Leave 'em out if you like it. I have gutted stock cans. They are loud but I'm positive it's not louder than the HD's that leave every morning in my neighborhood. Yes, we should police ourselves but let's not get carried away.
I leave for work at around 10pm and ride VERY conservatively until I'm out of the neighbor hood. None of my neighbors have ever mentioned that my bike was too loud, and I'm friendly with all of them around me. All of them are at least a generation older than me, so I'm guessing that they are asleep or at least trying to go to sleep when I leave. I rode my bike around the block the with the spuds in and came to the same conclusion as you, "still a little too quiet". I've been working this same shift for going on three years and haven't had any complaints about my 'tunes. As long as you are respectful, I don't think you'll have any issues.
Wow I am winning the vote with 100% I have had the spuds out since I installed the staintunes. I love their sound and don't think they are loud at all. I understand the social concerns but they are just not too loud.
I put them in, took them out could not decide. So I asked the neighbors. They all said no its not too load, take the spud out. Of course I only ever talk to the motorcycle riding neighbors so maybe my survey was biased?
I do install teh spud when I go to certain places. I worked a couple of bicycle races last summer. I used my horn alot less when the spud was out....
Personally I like mine without the spuds... sounds soooo good!!!
I think the HD guys need to start getting tickets...Those are some god awful loud and obnoxious bikes... Most of the ones where I am don't have mufflers just dam straight pipes.... I guess they thinkthe lounder they are the better...

I've run 'tunes on my '02 since early '03. After installing them I wound up on the same dilema you've hit. Baffles in - the bike was barely more audible that stock. I'm all for good public relations, but this was too much. So I took them out - too much of a good thing. I never heard any complaints from the neighbors (one of them rides a pretty loud HD), but I felt bad about making, what I thought was, too much noise.
My initial compromise was to leave them in most of the time and take them out on those few occasions I was able to flee to the Hill Country. Then I discovered the large baffles, bought a set and have been a happy camper ever since. Just a bit louder than the standard spuds at idle and light throttle openings and just a little quieter than no spuds above the vtec engagement point.
If you're interested, Staintune calls them "big bore baffles." I'm at the office and don't have access to either set, but I'll measure them this evening and report the differences if anybody's interested.

Staintune makes slightly larger baffles for most, if not all, of the their pipes. I'm not sure if they're all interchangeable or not. Any Staintune dealer can get them, and they retail for $31 ea.
Mine measure:
Stock: inlet i/d 25mm
exhaust i/d 29mm
Large: inlet i/d 29mm
exhaust i/d 32mm
I had both sets on my 2K VFR and my '02 Blackbird, and on both bikes the large spuds made for a good compromise. But on the '06 VTEC VFR, the large spuds just don't sound much better than the small ones... :blink:

Can you imagine the 'straight pipe' bike rallies if legislation passed on noise levels? You can see how well the hands free cell phone laws are working :schla15:
I think most of the performance exhausts can be ridden quietly out of neighborhoods (on the VFR's). I put the spuds on one day just to hear the difference and could barely hear em with the ear plugs in. Prefer Spud Free :fing02:
For those that change out frequently, make sure to use mild locktite and lockwashers on the little locking screws that face downwards. One of mine worked it's way out on my original superhawk and a good full throttle first gear moment jettison the spud like a mortar round. It, of course, landed on the road instead of the ditch causing a substantial dent. This was about 8 years ago and the replacement spud was $40 back then! WORD
So far, two responders have said that they think their bikes produce more horsepower with the spuds in. That would be an overwhelming argument to run with them installed. Anyone else think this is the case?
I've found that with the large baffle in it moves the power band into a more usable 4000 to 6000 rpm range for the street. I love the sound with it out but I miss that instant surge at a lower rpm more. I have one of the faster 99's with 60,000 miles. I'll also be 60 in Dec. Ride safe!
