Replacement Rotors For 2002

Hi All,

Internet searches are bringing me conflicting information on replacement rotors for my non-ABS 2002. Are the rotors the same for ABS versus non-ABS? I'm considering a pair of EBS Pro-Lite Contours to replace my warped rotors, but several sites seem to indicate that the ABS version is unique, yet they offer nothing for the non-ABS version. This just doesn't sound right.

looks like it's both, from the parts fische... the one rotor is the same on both models, but the other rotor has the ABS gear on it, and is a different part# between the bikes. I know.. no help what-so-ever.

ABS rotors ARE different!

They have the sensor ring for the ABS... so you have to buy new Honda rotors, or, buy aftermarket and find a way to transfer the sensor ring from your old rotors to the new ones.

he's right. the left rotor is the same while the right one is different.

since you've got an '02, i take it you've got black wheels. something you may wanna do is paint the carriers black (like me.) the carriers on most sport bikes are black and i think it blends in a lot better with the wheel. here are my before and after pics:

new rotors are kind of expensive. something you wanna do is buy some used ones. when i thought i was gonna have to get a new one, i called A&J Cycle Salvage and the guy told me he had what i needed and that it was guaranteed to be straight. it was $100 shipped. you can use the savings for other farkles!

gl1500C 97-01

are all the same. Aftermarket rotors are stupid expensive for little gain except bling, bling.

You can use any 98-09 front rotors from any VFR ABS or Not along with the bikes listed above by Doug.
If you had a abs bike then you would just need to drill 3 small mount holes in one rotor to hold the pulse ring on any of the above mentioned rotors! :cool:

The 3 mount holes are the only difference in an abs rotor! :excl:

I have no personal knowledge of the Wing and 900rr rotors, but have heard it many times that they are the same as the VFR. :huh:

Thanks, everyone. My 2002 is a non-ABS, so it's my assumption that I can simply pick up a pair of the EBS Pro-Lite Contour rotors and I'll be good to go. Has anyone out there actually purchased these or other aftermarket rotors?

BusyLittleShop just picked up a set of new rotors for his RC45. I think it's in the *Check this out*/mods forum. :cool:

I can't tell you who, but I do know several people here have used them and reported good results. :blush:

Just curious, but how did your original rotors get warped?

They're not totally bad, but with 42,000 miles of occasional agressive braking and HH pads, they pulsate more than I'd like. I had the exact same experience at about the same time on my old 4th generation VFR. Since my bike is long paid-off and since there seems to be no 7th generation on the horizon, I felt that I might as well update the brakes. Last year it was an Ohlins shock and a set of Traxxion Dynamics springs/cartridges. Next year could mean some SS brake lines (if I can ever find a kit for a non-ABS) and the year after that might be a Leo Vince. By then it will be almost 10 years old and I will have spent the original purchase price on farkles. Viva la $18,000 VFR! :idea3:

I know I have seen some, but can't think of who right now either.

Same part number on ron ayers... And we pulled Jason's off of his ABS model to use them on my 5th gen for a week or so while i waited on my EBC rotors to get here

The ABS rotors have a speed sensor pickup ring screwed onto them. An ABS rotor should work fine on a non-ABS bike, and non-ABS rotors should work fine on an ABS bike if you swap the pickup ring over.

I got that information from the EBC brakes catalogue.


First, I found out which front rotors the VFR uses. Then, I searched the rest of the EBC electronic catalogue for the identical part number, and noted the corresponding Honda models.


Why I did that was to help out a member who was trolling Ebay for used replacement rotors and he wanted to widen his search.


BUT, I've forgotten which was which, so anyone who really NEEDS to know should search the application list themselves.

Edit -> Find -> MD1014X -> Find All

The MD1014Xc is the contour rotor.

Thanks again BR and everyone else. I was at the Cycle World show in NYC this weekend and there was a Galfer booth with a factory rep. He confirmed that the Galfer rotors were 100% compatible with the OEMs and that they had a show deal. It was still a bit pricey, but for a touch over $600 I got 3 rotors and HH pads. Oh, well, I guess I'm doing my part for the economy.

I asked about their SS brake line kit, as the Galfer site specifies that the current kit is for ABS. He confirmed that, but said that demand was such that they were just coming out with a non-ABS kit. He asked me to e-mail him later this week about price and availability. I'll report back when I know more.
