What Is Average Clutch Life?

I can feel my clutch starting to engage pretty far out these days. Still works fine, though.

I have about 18,000 on my 2004.

Just curious to know if this is more or less miles than most folks have when they have to replace their clutch. :dry:

I'm sure a lot depends on what type of use is typical for your bike but I've not had any (significant) issues for nearly 40K miles now.

Almost all of my mileage is commuting - quite a bit of stop and go but no serious/repetative drag racing starts.

keep the clutch fliud changed so the mechnism doesnt gum up and start hanging the clutch, it will wear out quick if that happens , just changing out the resovior fluid, will keep stuff clean, full flush is a pain in the A$$ , I started that at 2000 mile, every month or 2 do the resovior . Here you are at 18,000 mile and probably on original fluid, get my drift, you probably need a full flush.

I expect near 100,000 mile life and over half way there as it is, and change the engine oil keeps the clutch in a more debri free enviornment.


the vfr clutch runs pretty far out anyway, if your running a real slick oil, it can run even further out, cause the oil is so slick, you only have to pull the lever in slightly to get it to slip

60,000 miles so far on my 1999.

Put a new clutch in my '98 after 60,000 miles.
It was slipping just a little now and then under hard acceleration. :biggrin:

'00 5th gen with over 80k miles and original clutch.

Frequent oil changes and yearly flush of hydraulics may help. That, and not abusing it.

My 2000 vfr has 55,000 miles on the original clutch, and it is still working great. I do change the oil every 3,000 miles, which helps the clutch life.

My 04 has 70,800 miles, and still has the original clutch...however I think that I'm at the end of the adjustment at the lever so I've got a new set of clutch plates and springs ready to go. No sense in having go outon the road somewhere!

I think I have flushed and replaced the fluid twice, maybe! once for sure. :comp13:

I would venture to guess that every VFR clutch should last 100k miles easy! :fing02:
I abuse the hell out on my clutch with constant 2nd gear & even 3rd gear attempted wheelies, heavy and constant hard acceleration loading and have no signs of any issue at 66k miles so far. :cool:

Ditto, except the 3rd gear wheelie nonsense. 44k miles, mostly hard twisty riding, no problem.

Remember it is a hydraulic self adjusting system.
