Today I stopped by a local body shop to see if they would paint my Corbin Beetle Bags and my top case red (now yellow and black respectively). The shop owner said he'd have to charge me too much, but it would be OK if I made a deal with his painter and pay the painter directly under the table. The painter has a great resume, and was even a chief painter (or some such title) for Rolls Royce when he was in the UK.
Anyway, he said he would fix the little dings, paint and clearcoat everything, and color match to my '98 VFR red. He wants $150.00, and I agreed. He said he'd have them done by this coming Saturday afternoon.
Did I get a reasonable deal?
Sounds like a good deal to me. I would make sure hes got the right color codes. You may get it back from him and see slight differences in various lighting conditions if he tries to guess on the right color. You can find them here on VFRD if you search.

Remember it's only a good deal if you get a good paint job. I have been offered a super low paint estimate and am wondering why it's so low. Is the guy hooking me up or is he going to do a half azz job.
I know the main reason of the low cash price is because of the economy and painters needing sidework.

You all would not believe what bass boat black sells for to match on an '06. $189 a pint, just for the paint.
If I ever mess it up again, the bike gets a custom color. So yea, it's a good deal, and good luck matching red.

Does this price include materials? Even if it doesn't it's still a good deal IF it comes out half way right, however its pretty hard to screw up something to small.

The price is right. You said he has a good resume and has obviously been doing it for some time. Just make sure he backs up his work before you hand over the bags and the money. If he does then you are set. Also tell him that you will be posting pics on a VFR forum and that always gets some perks from painters because they see possible free advertising and future business.
The Sandia Fun Run this Saturday has some surprises for those who show up as I finally will have all the body work complete. ;)
He has 32 years of experience, with only four employers. He went to the UK when he was 19 to learn the trade and became the youngest lead painter Rolls Royce ever had. His previous job was at a custom shop where he painted Ferraries and anything else exotic that came in the door.
I dropped off my pillion cover early this morning so he can match the color. He already had my cases stripped, filled, sanded, masked, and ready to paint, and apologized for not having them done yet. I just dropped them off yesterday afternoon!
Also, the reason it's not more is that his boss let's him use the shop's resources, including paint, etc. So I'm just paying for labor. Seems like a good deal for his time!
I'll repost when I get the cases back, hopefully with a picture. If the work is good, I'll post his name and number. He gets parts shipped to him often, paints them, and ships them back.
I have a similar deal. A local shop is owned by a friend's father, who's owned the biz for most of his life. My friend(his son), has never worked anywhere else. I rent the booth over there on weekends sometimes, and I can usually walk in there on weekday afternoons and rattle can something or other(only in the winter, when it's too cold to do it at home).
edit - yeah, if the work is quality, then $150 is a great deal. Make sure you tip the guy, or buy him lunch or something if it comes out at least halfway decent!

Good deal. When I painted a trunk for a guy last year I charged the same and that was just for the trunk. My work is top notch and I woudl have charged more, but he was a friend and I already had the black leftover from another job (it was a two tone job)
As long as the work meets YOUR approval, you got a good deal.

Not to be negative,but I think something is not right with the deal,as one of the guys said frekin paint costs that much alone. Also I cant understand how a shop
owner would want a customer to make a special deal with one of his employees,call me stupid or crazy but I dont like it. Anyway since I am in your neighborhood
I have a 69 Camaro that a good body shop quoted me $5000 to do a complete paint job. Let me know where this shop is if you get a good paint job, Maybe the guy
from Rolls will paint my car for a couple hundred bucks! eddie

As mentioned, this guy is doing it on his own time, so he can charge as he wishes for his time. If the shop is doing well, and the owner is cool, and already got his cut from the usual insurance jobs during regular hours, then there's no reason for the quoted price to be inaccurate.
It's also much easier to paint a few bags after hours than a car, so, good luck. $5000 for a complete car really isn't bad if they're doing a quality job(panels off chassis, chassis interior & underbody, engine bay, trunk, etc.)
Materials for the bags comes out to maybe $50 on the high end, where the same $50 *might* get one of your front fenders done...
I have a friend in Denver that matches paint for a living(now has moved up the chain into management), I remember him saying that the color code isn't the only thing it takes to match paint. Because you have to deal with fading, etc.......

I got a set of silver OEM hard bags from David Silver Spares painted Honda "Cosmic Black" to match my topbox last summer. The painter even removed those unsightly reflectors and the paint job turned out absolutely perfect.
The cost: $200
I was glad to pay it for such a great job.

I agree with Seb on this one. I have had 2 bikes painted in the past and the price ranged from $500 - $1200 depending on how many fairings, number of colors, and extras like vinyl and such that went into the project. $150 for some hard cases sounds pretty reasonable to me.
And comparing a car to a bike is like comparing apples and oranges. Way more work involved in a car. I can take the fairings off my bike in a couple of hours thus cutting down on labor. Also, cash on the barrel deals always cuts down the cost of a project (especially if you work the deal with the shop owner). :fing02:
Another thing, the guy is probably getting the paint for free if they mix their own at the shop. Most shops I've worked at are OK with some minor "sampling" by the employees as it is such a small quantity that the shop will not notice, yet to go out and buy it alone would be a lot more money.
Then again, I may have just worked for some really nice shop owners! :biggrin:

He called me earlier today. He got backed up with work, so he's getting in at 5:00 AM tomorrow morning (Saturday) to paint my cases. And, yes, he gets the paint gratis.
I hope this works out well. I tend to trust people and give them the benefit of the doubt whenever possible. If it turns out badly, I'll let you know all of the gory details. I'll see mid-morning tomorrow when I pick them up and I'll post up as soon as I get a chance.

Well, I picked the cases up this morning. Excellent workmanship. However, the color is a bit orangish in some light, and about dead on in other light. For $150.00, though, I'm happy with them the way they are.
I'll post up some pics when I get them mounted. Maybe tomorrow.
OFF TOPIC: I have to find a Givi windshield FAST. Mine broke at the tabs today and nearly flew off. I was moving, shall we say, at a brisk pace at the time. It came with the bike, and a tab or two were cracked or broken off when I got it. If I can't mend it, or get a new one delivered this week, I'll have to put my original on, which is about 5" or so shorter. I leave Saturday for Rapid City, SD, and I'd prefer to have some wind protection for the 1,600+ mile trip out there. It's always something.
