Garmin To Powerlet Connection

For those who have a Powerlet connection, What do you use to power your GPS? The aux/cig cable that came with the garmin doesn't fit in the Powerlet.

I don't know what kind of gps you have, but the zumo comes with a power wire designed to wire directly to the battery. I took that wire, cut it down and wired one of THESE on it and it works like a charm. Add in one of tightwad's fuse blocks, connect it so it's switched w/ the ignition and you're good to go!

I have a nuvi and it runs off a standard 5v D connector. So i have been using my car charger for my motorola razor.

I have a nuvi 760, and a powerlet connecter for my steering stem. I didn't realize the powerlet was smaller/different than a normal aux input.

You could go out to the Powerlet website, and order something specifically to power the GPS. Kinda spendy, but smaller and more elegant.

Or if you have a powerlet-to-cig adapter, you can use that. They have those on the Powerlet site too. Worth owning just for temporary use with random devices that you might need later. A lot of cig lighter power plugs have circuitry in them to step the voltage down, so you usually can't just cut them off and wire them directly. I have powerlet outlets on most of my bikes, and in my garage I have a box full of adapters that convert between powerlet, cig lighters, and SAE connectors, coax, and USB. Plus some splitters to feed two or three devices off one plug. It's handy to just be able to rummage for plug-and-play pieces to charge new cell phones or an MP3 player or a friend's camera or whatever.

You can get a Garmin specific cable from Powerlet, or you can get an adapter for a Cigarette Lighter from them as well. I wired my tank bag to house all my connections, although for a single connection I can use the steering stem alone.

Find what you like on the Powerlet site, and I can sell it to you for 10% less from my site...just search on the part number.

I have a 12 inch powerlet to Garmin power cord that I plug into a steering stem powerlet outlet.

i got it from Powerlet directly. It was a bit pricey, but it is a very clean and useful solution.

Yeah, the price is steep. They will also make it in any length you want, if their pre-made lengths are not what you need. Powerlet has been very helpful to work with, and has offered to built custom VFR parts if we find more needs.

I did a search by the model GPS I have and it came up with model PPC-015-SC, I just ordered it over at tightwads site. Thanks for all the help everyone.

I hadn't visited Tightwad's site up until last night... Great! Had exactly what I was looking for and at 10% off. Okay, I'm in. Shipping BTW, is also more than fair.

Bought a PAC-026, Y connector, going from an SAE to a split 12v cigarette lighter and another SAE. Hopefully, will get it before this weekend's ride. That dinosaur Garmin GPS-V will finally get some real use.

I have had the cig/powerlet adapter for a few years.

When I emailed you I already had two hardwires. I ended up getting a third so I could keep my powerlets open for misc stuff like cells or amps. I was also worried a little bit about vibarations (bike and terrain) on my KLR so wanted a firm point. All of my hardwires go to a fusebox or aux fusebox. The Zumo power cable to a powerlet is a good option but I was already down the road a piece with multiple hard wires. :happy:

I will have to make it up to you by buying a RR :biggrin:

I use that same tank bag adapter, but I split mine with a custom cable on the inside that allows 4 uses.

My GPS is wired separately so this is for charging the mp3 and cell phone. Sounds like I need to get some more electric gizmos. :biggrin:

I used the standard cigarette lighter adapter and wired up my own cigarette lighter to the handle bars.
