I need to locate a good, reasonably priced replacement for the plastic fairing fasteners that join the left and right fairing i.e. the ones right on the bottom and go in a couple other places. The original ones have disintegrated over time and I haven't been able to locate a reasonable replacement. I believe Honda wants your left nut for a 25 cent part.
Also, I need a new recessed fairing bolt since one of them vibrated it's way to freedom somewhere along the road. Either that or it was liberated by someone with a similar problem. I probably will just have to buck up for this but would appreciate if someone's located a non-OEM replacement for this as well.
I've done a search based on plastic clips, fastener, fairing and still haven't found any topics referencing this so hopefully it's not a repost.
If anyone knows where to get these non-OEM replacements, that would be appreciated.
I went to www.thefastenerwarehouse.com and ordered GM Push Type Ret. 1/4" hole.
I got the TR240B/ 100pcs. and there were like $10-20 for the 100. The stock Honda clips are one size metric below 1/4" so this requires you to drill/ream out the stock holes slightly, but you've got 100 clips for the price of 3-4 Honda clips. It's cheap enough to just cut them off each time you need to and install new one's! :blush:
Best replacement I have found is at www.bikebolts.com. Instead of a 6.3mm rivet for a 6mm hole, it's a 5.6mm rivet, screw type. I only found 1 spot where it didn't see long enough, and a couple spots I preferred the look of the OEM.
There is a stickied thread about this in the paint and body forum.
I got mine off ebay, they are saturn style fasteners. go to ebay, Search for "21077123". They fit perfectly. $6.99 for 25 clips + 2.80 for Priority Mail shipping.
When going to put them in they fit fairly snug and the pin took quite a bit of effort to push in, but I took a few apart after they were installed and all was good.
It was real nice to have a fasterner for every hole and the front plastic be tight for the first time, for under 10 dollars!!

I went to fastener warehouse as well, got several different sizes for my truck, atv , vfr etc. , WWWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY cheaper than stock. Thery fit perfect and if you squirt just a touch of silicone lube on them the pin pops right in and is a breeze to take out.

I actually went to check for the GM/Saturn retainers at thefastenerwarehouse.com and wouldn't you know it they actually state these work for the VFR's (fastenerwarehouse.com). Now just have to figure out the absolute cheapest option what with being all Scottish and whatnot.
BTW, the left nut goes for about the same price as the right nut. It's just a personal preference thing.

Hey thanks for the offer. I'll let you know. I've got to stop by the local discount auto parts store for some other things anyways so now that I know what I'm looking for maybe they have those retainers cheap or at least reasonable.
Actually, I'd like to find a replacement for the allen screws. Whilst staring at the Augusta poster in my garage, I wonder about a kit
to replace them all with spring loaded, 1/2 turn fasteners. Not cheap I'm sure, but then again, nothing worth while is.
Otherwise, I too picked up 10 of the fore mentioned plastic screw in clips to replace my decaying ones. Cheap - replacable - next?
I recently broke several of the plastic fasteners (two types, of course) on my '97 and went to the dealership for replacements. I think the replacements must be made of gold now by looking at the price sheet. I decided to visit my local Ace Hardware store instead and they had the same styles in about 20 different sizes for .17 cents a piece. At that price I didn't even bother comparing sizes, I just grabbed a few different ones that looked close and still only spent $2. I had the exact ones I needed and tossed the left overs in the trash with no worries.
How do you "disengage" these? Do you have to get a small bladed screwdriver or similar between the head and the body of the fastener or is this like the existing Honda fastener where you just push in on the center and (in theory at least) it recesses into the fastener body and is disengaged?
I had a local motorcycling poser tell me the factory clips "should never break as long as you know what you're doing, just just have to learn how" after I said 20k miles had taken their toll on some of the plastic bodywork pushpin fasteners. In the same conversation he went on to tell me about an early-90's CBR600 with just 6k miles on it that he had picked up and he wasn't going to change the oil until he was sure to get his 3k mile's worth out of the previous owners maintenance. Meaning, he's probably riding around on decade old motor oil in his new toy, but at least he knows more than I do about maintaining a bike.
They are not like the existing Honda fastener. It would require a thin bladed screwdriver to pull the insert out. Luckily my dad is a tool freak and has the special tool that is used to pull these out. It looks like a screwdriver but the end is thin and made to slide between the pin and the outer part of the fastener. It is also curved in the middle so it will snuggle up against the pin instead of slipping off and scratching your paint.
I may look into the fasteners that were like the Honda's but were used by Mazda in my old 626. They might be the exact same, actually, center pushed in and they were shaped the same. It's been a long time since I had that car though so my memory might be fuzzy.
