Trying to recover pics & data from old computer using this Knoppix CD another member sent me years ago(it worked back then) but I can't get it to copy the files I found???

I'm assuming you have one working computer with a cd burner, and that the bad computer also has a cd drive. I couldn't find a good youtube vid showing everything, so try and follow
Throw that knoppix CD away.
Get the uber-user-friendly Ubuntu live cd.
Use a cd burning program (like Nero) to burn the CD image (.ISO) you just downloaded to a blank CD
Put it in the bad computer. Restart the computer. It should boot from the cd and you should see something like this when it is done. If not, you need to change your bios settings.
To change bios settings. Restart your computer. You should see some sort of text telling you to press a key to enter bios. The key is generally either 'F1', 'DEL', or 'F2'. If you don't see anything, then just start pressing these keys right as the computer is booting, and hope you get lucky. You will enter a text menu like this.
Somewhere in here will be a boot order choice, or a 'first boot device'. Set that to CD drive. You should be booting from the CD drive now.
Once you get into the first Ubuntu menu, select the choice to try (not install) ubuntu. Wait a while for it to load. Go into my computer. Click on the Hard drive options. If everything goes smoothly, you should be able to access the files without a hitch. Just copy them over to a USB drive and done.
You could also try Damn Small Linux instead of Ubuntu. Most of the above would still apply. DSL has more of a windows 3.1 feel. It is also only a 50MB download instead of 700MB.

No help with the knoppix disc, but can you remove the hard drive from the old computer, install it in the new computer as a secondary storage drive, then browse it for the data you want?
ProTip: buy yourself an external hard drive and use it for all your data storage. Then, if your computer gets nuked and wiped for any reason, you're still in the good.

The source PC (old PC): What OS platform? Windows Me (or prior)? Windows NT/2000/XP? Linux OS?
Is the hard drive corrupt or sectors unreadable? There are tools that you can use that are free (like Knoppix recovery), but I would recommend tools like Spin-Rite, or On-Track if you are trying to recover data from a flaky hard drive. I have had a lot of success using these tools.
If it is a Linux platform, you might want to get an updated distro of Knoppix (or other).

Haha... yea. Think simple scenario first. If it is just a matter of transferring data from source to destination drives (hard drive health is OK), then what veefer said. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm trying to recover pics of the VFR (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) , plus other data.
What happened was I updated to a newer version of XP and it wiped out all my personal date, pics, files, etc. which it shouldn't have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) The computer runs fine, it just doesn't show any of my old data!
I found all the date using the Knoppix CD, but just couldn't get it to copy any of it. I finally got it to copy to a USB port and have started the process.
Installing the HD into my new computer would be great if it/I could see the data but you can't.

Let me know if you can't get it sorted. I can always take control of your computer again... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) Sounds so sinister...
If the files were "deleted", you definitely don't want to download or save anything on your computer until you have been able to recover the files. I say "deleted", because windows will not erase the data, but rather mark the space occupied as available to be overwritten. Until that happens, by saving files or formatting, the little 1s and 0s should remain intact.
