The fan started making a pretty loud noise today in trafik, it still turns and brings the engine temperature down but there's a noticeable buzzing noise. Before I take the bike in, has anyone identified what's the part that wears and needs changing after displaying these symptoms?

Sounds like your fan might be hitting, most likely your radiator. Take the fairings off and check, as this can actually wear a whole right through your radiator.
This usually happens in a fall, the radiator gets pushed right into the fan, did your bike get knocked over recently?

Yep another. If the bike ever lays on the left side it will push the fan against the rad. It's an easy fix. I have had to bend the ears that hold the fan a couple times. If this is the problem you need to fix it ASAP. The sound could be the fan blade shaving your raiator.
You can also ck. the nut that holds the plastic fan blade. I havent seen one fail yet. On honda cars theY get used a lot more and can go 100k=200k MILES

Hmm I'm far from home so I'll make sure to avoid slow trafik and do the appropriate inspection. The bike was dropped once by the dealer (on left side) just before I took delivery of it (in my driveway as the delivery guy rolled it out of the truck, just imagine how miserable I felt, but they replaced the damaged fairing parts with new ones), but that was 3 years ago.
Assuming the blade is rubbing against the rad, what am I supposed to do about it? I would assume the fan assembly is bolted up, with no adjustment?

Easy enough to reach in there and spin the fan blade, any drag is BAD. You might have to pull the left lower to get access, but if it's rubbing you can just about bend out the mount point(s) (metal tabs that the fan bolts to) to gain clearance for the fan blade. :cool:

After taking off the fairing piece (which was unnecessary, the bottom of the fan can be reached with the fairing on) I checked for contact between the fan and the rad, it felt perfectly normal. I then had the motor running long enough to trigger the fan, magically it no longer made any unusual noise. Puzzled (and somewhat dissatisfied), I put the plastic back on, then realized that it may have been the inner fender that was making contact with the fan, I can see a bit of wear on the edge closest to the fan.

Funny, well not funny but someone else just recently posted about the inner fairing hitting the fan after an oil change and to watch for that! :blush:

Well, that was a good thing you took the side panel off, or you might have never figured it out.... Why to go.....
I was thinking it might have be replaced with a Buell fan :blush:
Bruckner, it happened to me.. Mine stopped the fan but was an easy fix, re-adjusted it to the side piece, freak encounter but happens when the inner fender does not mate up and rides over the side piece. Just a lapse in attention to detail.
FWIW, when I did my 16,000 mile service (at 15,000 miles) I found a big rock in between the blades. Perhaps you had the same thing and it found it's way out?
