im think its cool he can drop it back down seemingly pretty soft instead of slamming it down.

Every time the front wheel comes up on me all I can think is "Okay, time to get this sucker back down now".

Just open the throttle more when the front is coming down and it will slow down the descent. Doing wheelies in 1st gear with huge engine braking is a recipe for a balls / fuel tank meeting, 2nd gear clutch works much better.

I was one of those unfortunate ones that was born without the wheelie gene in my DNA.

Not impressed. I have seen an old guy do longer wheelies on the Cherohala.

Get the technique down on a mountain bike or dirt bike, then transferring those skills to a street bike is easy.

Apparently, I was born with the wheelie gene... and it's really been working against the old "Veteran MSF Instructor" thing I've got goin' on certain weekends... I'm getting certification to teach the new "Advanced Rider Course - Sportbike Techniques" in two weeks... so, I'm sure there will be a wheelie segment in there... if not, I'll just have to add it. :blink:

I figured out the other day why I can't wheelie. Whenever I try, I only open the throttle about halfway before calling it good. And, you know what, that's perfectly okay with me.

Best way, IMO, is to use the clutch in 2nd gear. Reason for this, is in second gear you have less torque, so it is not as easy to loop it, and less engine braking, so if you chop the throttle the bike doesn't come back down as hard. It is also much easier to shift from 2nd to 3rd than from 1st to 2nd.

You can also just use the throttle in 1st gear, just roll along at about 7000RPM and roll on the throttle. Either way, make sure and roll back on the throttle when setting the front end back down to soften the landing.

To do a 2nd gear clutch wheelie, roll along at whatever MPH is 4500RPM in 2nd, go WFO throttle and hold it, then feather the clutch. When I say feather, I don't mean pop it, you won't get the front wheel off the ground doing that. You need to use the clutch to modulate the power to the ground, and it will take a lot of practice to get it right. Don't pull the clutch all the way in, just until it engages, then use the 'friction zone.' You probably won't get the front tire more than an inch off the ground the first 100 times you try it. Once you get it down though, it is an easy, reliable way to get to the balance point.

About 2nd gear wheelie, when you are at 4500 rpm...is the clutch out or all the way in at the moment when you go WFO. What I am asking is when you are rolling along at 4500 rpm and crank the throttle is the clutch out and then u pull the clutch in a little to feather it or are you rolling along with the clutch in and go WFO and start letting the clutch out slowly (feather it)???

WFO with clutch lever is all the way out. Doing it this way gives you a little bit of a boost as the front end bounces a little as the power is removed, then just as the suspension rebounds, you are letting out the clutch.

I did wheelie my bicycle practically all the way across Cobb County in my younger days. When I was 12 years old in 1962.

Other (mostly stupid) ways that would make wheelie-ing easy:

Put a heavy passenger on back/ fill your saddlebags with weights.
Put your feet on the rear pegs and lean all the way back.
Add MAXIMUM front preload (seriously, the suspension won't be able to extend, and so any upward motion will lift the tire off the ground, the bike will be unstable and dangerous, but you'll wheelie easy).
Get a torocharger.
change gearing.

And, of course, buy a GSX-R. :goofy:

This coming from the guy who's only got the front wheel off the ground on accident...

I think I pulled one first gear wheelie way back in 1989 with my then-new EX500. Wasn't exactly trying to, either, but it garnered oohs and ahhs from the other two biking buddies at the time.

If I had an $800 old KLR I'd maybe experiment with doin' wheelies. But NOT on my $5,000 baby VFR. I can just see it now... wife comes home, sees the lovely red cycle all scratched up and beat, because of me trying to do wheelies in a parking lot. I don't need that aggravation. Or repair bill.

I've heard,,, just heard mind you, I've not tried it myself,,, that the best way to wheelie is the buy an Aprillia Tuono. :biggrin: Apparently, they wheelie without any special training at all.

With warm tires...Roll to about 15 to 20 MPH...roll off the throttle, then back on with about 75% throttle real quick! The front end will lift with the application of throttle! No clutch required! Clean pavement, no dirt, preferably a nice clean road or
very large lot! I watched the clutching video and may try it...but I hate wear on the clutch! Have a Wheely nice day! Happy New Year!!!!!
