Just Got An 05, Tons Of Questions On Problems I May Have...

Hey guys, I just purchased an 05 VFR non abs, I have a few issues with the bike that was wrong when I got it.

-First off, the Speedo, time, fuel gauge, and anything else digital and the tach doesnt come on, back lighting comes on and all the oil light, FI light, nuetral light and turn signals come on like there suppose to, does this mean its shot?

-Next, after I turn the key on or shut the bike off, there is a relay that constatly ticks, sounds like a turn signal, but when it ticks the FI light flashes, when I start the bike or the fuel injection kicks on it gows away?

I may have more to add in a bit, but for now that is the main things.

That is such a shame that your bike is acting up. My 05 ran flawlessly day after day. I'm responding here to encourage you to keep after the electrical gremlins until you have the same bike I rode.

There are quite a few people here to advise you, I'll start by telling you to get the service manual and start checking for bad a ground on everything.

I live in North eastern Indiana, bout an hour north of Fort Wayne, I rode the bike today about 30 miles and absolutely love it. I just know these forums can be so helpful and I just dont got the extra cash to drop it off at the honda dealer, if ya know what I mean!

I'm not electrical genius, but I have a multimeter and some beer, if you ever want to make it up to West MI I'd be happy to help you look at it.

I got lots of beer and lots of multimeters, sound like a good day? :D

I also wish I could find someone close with the same speedo cluster, so I could plug theres in and see if mine just went out? I want to buy one, but affraid thats not it.

Hey, Welcome here! Someone will chime in soon with some really good information.

Hi I had the same issues as you and it's well known so you are NOT alone!!

I would suggest opening the right side from the front fairing and you will find a yellow block earth connector, take all of those wires out and re-solder them bypassing the connector altogether.. Next you will find a 30amp fuse under your seat, you need to beef up the wires around the battery and replace the fuse... that's what I did and since had no problems (touch wood).

Yep, sounds like similar symptoms that mine had before the recall was done.

Before you start hacking on your electrical system, find out if the wiring harness recall has been done on your bike. If not, take it to a dealer and have it done.

Ya I thought bout that recall, right now I have most the fairings off redoing the entire bike. Will the dealer still perform the recall work if needed, if these fairings are off? Will this recall fix the speedo problem also?

The dealer should be happy the fairings are off - less work for them to do with the same compensation from Honda.

Hard to say, your issues in passing, seem like they could very well be part of the ground issue in the front harness. Either way, the front harness is replaced, so even if your problem lies elsewhere in the front harness, it should be fixed. After the work is done, if you still have your issue, you know it isn't the front harness and you can start testing other things.

You should be able to call any Honda dealer, talk with service, tell them your VIN# and they can lookup and see if recall work has been done.

I believe your speedo, tach and other lcd gauges are all on the same fuse under your right fairing. check it.

I did, its all good, I wish thats what it was, but I checked that first

I'm thinking the front harness recall also. It sounds just like the symtoms Dutch had when his blue connector bypass came apart. And as for the fairings, like Jeremy said, they should greet that with open arms. They did on my bike since I was already replacing the thermostat I took it to them with no body execpt the rear cowling/tail light, but the idiot bastages still fu**ed it up and I couldn't turn the bars completely to the lock position in one direction. Anyway, check the 30-pin blue connector that is on the front left side of the bike while sitting on it. You can also do a search for the blue connector, I believe KKen has a how-to posted on the subject. Good luck.

P.S. If you still don't have it fixed by MotoGP weekend, I'll be in Indy if you want to try and swap gauges in the hotel parking lot.

These problems are after I got the battery, bike came with a totally dead battery, so that was my first purchase,

But I just got my call from the dealer, he said all recalls have been performed on my bike, He suggested I test continuity on all the wires going to the speedo, so I guess thats what I will try next. Also what are the 2 seperate wires on the speedo below the main harness? Is that for the Temp or something?

Hey, thought I would update this, I bought a new speedo, and it ficed my problems, all works great now. And the relay just stopped ticking, I woundered if it had something to do with the speedo? has not done it once since I installed the new speedo.
