So I just went to go adjust my valves on my '02 for the first time, 56K miles, and no adjustment was needed! Some intake were a hair tight and some exhaust a hair loose, but all within spec. I love Honda's!

Keep going BaileyRock, you don't need a valve adjust, maybe at 100K.

I've just turned over 25,000 miles and rising at a rapid pace - I just can't keep off the damn thing!

If I still had my Triumph Sprint I would of done over 70,000 miles on it by now... hmmm, pleased I've got a Honda

I had a local dealer do my valve check at 18k+ mi. I only did it then b/c they quoted me a ridiculously low price to do it, which they honored. All valves were in spec. Unless I keep this bike forever, I doubt I'll ever have it done again.

same here 52k miles and no valve adjustment.

72000 on my '03 VTEC and no ticking... no valve check.
85000 on my '98 5th gen, has ticking but... no valve check...

I had mine checked at 16K a few weeks ago and all were within spec. They tweaked a couple that were a little loose but within spec. Now I'll ride it til it falls apart. Chances are that I'll fall apart before that happens. :goofy:

I did the 16k valve check/adjustment on my 2002 VFR myself. All of my normal valves were in spec but quite a few of my Vtec valves were out of spec. Checking the Vtec valves, making adjustments and verifying clearances means removing the cams 3 times. Once to install the slide pin stoppers and check the clearance. Once to swap out the bucket with the correct size and verify clearance with the slide pin stoppers installed, and once again to remove the slide pin stoppers. The entire valve check process from the time the bike is rolled into the garage to pulling the bike out and taking a test ride is not very difficult but fairly time consuming.

I'm posting out of concern that people are being told their clearances are within spec when in reality the Vtec valves are not being checked properly or not being checked at all. Hopefully my concern is not justified and I just had one of the rare examples that needed adjustment.

Just FYI, my VFR is a 2002 ABS model built in 11/2001.

Just passed 70,000 and no valve check since 20K. Right before the Colorado trip, I heard some ticking coming from the front bank, but it was just a slightly loose header. New copper rings and the valves quieted right down. :laugh:

Like Bailey sez, though, it may vary from bike to bike. Each winter I tell myself "I'm gonna check 'em this year", because you won't necessarily hear an exhaust valve tightening.

So then I go skiing instead.

Okay toughguys... Who's going to take one for the team and go for "The highest mileage without an oil change"?

When someone says "out of spec" I'd be curious to see the actual numbers. Is it correct to assume that as long as the clearance is "non-zero" there will be no risk of valve damage? Or do the clearances get even smaller when the engine is at operating temperature?

7500 miles before oil change once, I usually go every 6000 miles otherwise I'd be in the dealer every other month - never been a problem.

Change your own oil, problem solved. The Walmart supertech filters are just as good as OEM, and you can buy whatever oil you want!

I accidentally went over 10k miles on an oil change early on with my 02, at least it was Mobil 1 20w-50. :blush:

My local dealership has given me nothing but great service, so I let them do the check at 16,000 miles. Stopped by on day two and observed progress.....tech was reinstalling cams at the time. They did the valve check, changed coolant and put in new spark plugs for 330 bucks!!!

I am at 32,000 now and will probably wait until around 50,000 before I even consider having them checked again.

I can only imagine that a dealer would feel compelled to tell you he fixed something after charging you a five-spot or so.

I am only at 6000 miles so I haven't even considered a valve check yet but the oil has been changed 4 times. I can't believe some people would wait 6000 miles to change the oil.

4 tmes! :blink: 6-7000 miles is perfectly fine.

My Buddy here had 184,000+ miles on His 2002 (I have reported before on this Bike) with no valve check, but He finally traded it in on a new 09 Kawasaki Concours 1400......Someone is still toolin' around on His old VFR around Florence, Alabama right now....... :fing02: :beer:
