Time For Another Oil Change/..

hi.. I was wondering what type of oil is good for an oil change ?The shop says honda hp but I was wondering if I could run synthetic oil...and what was a good brand?? thank you..

I use Motul 5100 in my VFR (10W40) and RC30 (15W50) and Castrol GTX in my VF750F (my preferred oil for that bike was discontinued long ago, it doesn't shift well on Motul).

FYI, asking which oil to use can open a big can of worms. Everyone has a opinion on the matter and no one seem to agree. It can get nasty. Do a quick search in the right section Here and you will find a ton of info.

Amsoil, Mobil1 and Rotella T seem to be popular. I like Mobil 1. YMMV.

This thread should be required bedtime reading for anyone asking this sort of question on VFRD.

I've been here on VFRD for several years now and never have seen anyone with engine issues due to lubrication problems. I figured if you somewhat routinely change oil with something that is at least labeled as oil, you'll be fine. Me: I run synthetic because I'm lazy and have longer change intervals.

Everyone has given you good info.... One thing to add from a post I saw a few weeks ago concerning getting the oil to one of the two CCT's (front or rear I forget) one is oiled by the splash method, the other is bathed.... They said as long as it's a light 10/40 it will reach the CCT better....

I only run Honda HP without Moly. I was told that Synthetic oil was too slippery for a wet clutch and I would end up burning up my clutch plates. The HP is not that expensive, and I only change it every 5000 miles so It's not worth trying to save a couple bucks.

I run repsol full synth in my '07 as well as my race quad and utility ATV and 1978 CB400. I like it, it works fine as will most every oil and they have cool looking race bikes so there ya go :)

Make sure your oil does not have "energy conserving" additives, as these are supposedly bad for a wet clutch. Just check the back of the bottle.

I think the concensus here would agree on this one thing - No oil additives!

I use Castrol GTX, 10w-40, seems fine, inexpensive. I change it every 3000. next summer I may use 20w-50. The dealer used that on the previous owners oil changes. I am told that the additives are bunk.

Dude - I dont know who told you that, but that mechanic is from the dark ages. - He may have meant ' No Moly' in the oil. Otherwise look at how many synth brands out there and how many bikes with a wet clutch.

No need to worry. The question in itself is very valid. Which is part of the reason there has been so much debate on here. :fing02:

No such thing as a dumb question, only dumb mistakes. If you do a search on here, you'll find more oil information/debate than you'll ever want to know! :biggrin:

I just switched to Mobil 1 about a month ago (and yes it is energy conserving), from plain old dino-oil. The difference was immediately noticeable, bike came alive and smoothed out at high rpm's. No clutch slippage as of yet, but it has increased rear tire slippage and front wheeliage :)

Look out for the Moly. It works good to keep the muffler bearings quiet though.

Shell Synthetic Rotella T 5W-40, the blue bottle. Available at Wally World for $20/gallon. Christ, an actual oil thread; I can't even post in complete sentences!

just reading up here and learning the VFR talk and walk. I've ridden Goldwings for 26 years now and most all my bikes after 1990 on have had Mobil 1 or Rotella T 10-40 and now 5-40 in them. The '03 HD, '05 Silver Wing, '08 Triumph, Yamaha's & 88,99,02 GL's and my ol 77wing all ran Rotella. Wet clutches all. No problem. Noted on the oil temp gauge equiped bikes it did run about 30-50 degrees cooler??? Never have replaced a clutch on my wings and most had over 100K on them. 99 today has 187K on it and the 02 103K so far. I'm kind of a beilever in Rotella and have found if a GOOD quality oil, they will all work. Tried the additives years back (20) and other than $$$ didn't do anything. Pull a sidecar and camper trailer on the 88/99 and never had an issue although at 5k the clutch does chatter some under load. Time for an oil change.

Now question- would the oil break down quicker or loose properties on Hi-Rev bikes?

Whoah, I better run and check my wet clutch that's been running nothing but fully synthetic oil for the past 10 years and 70,000 kilometers then! :comp13:

as I recall when I signed on I promised not to post up which oil/tire types of questions....didn't promise not to make comments about other posts though......Like one fellow who has run his machine for 10 years on mobil 1 or the other fellow who ran the rotellas.....10-40....5-40 I have an older Suzi...my screen name sake that has had a change of mobil1 twice yearly for well its 30 years old the original owner had it for 4 years before me so for 26 years its had a change twice yearly...and I'm on the OEM clutch......I will admit the bike was in storage for 5 years whilst I enjoyed my ST1300 but its bak in service with a fresh belly of mobil1....I ain't hiding or running....if this doesn't make a believer I don't know what will.....and while I'm at it no way would I leave honda straight dino oil in any motor for 5000 miles......who knows who made that syrup....who ever was the low bidder is who......honda didn't make it just the package.......less see any more???? just like their oil filters.....had a major part number change a while back....guys at local parts desk didn't understand...if they had read the filters they changed manufactorers.....

Would someone educate me on the benefits of diesel oil in a gas motor? I have a diesel truck and know that the oil is meant for higher temps and has more detergents... but that's about the extent of my diesel oil knowledge.

What are the drawbacks?

One other question - has anyone sent their oil into Blackstone for an analysis?

If so, what oil were you running and how did the analysis look?

I did send some oil samples in Rotella syn 5w40 verses Amsoil 15w40 both diesil oils

amasingly both oils had the identical amount of wear metal counts, same shear ect. The difference was the amsoil had twice as many miles, so is the amsoil twice as good? Yeh I think it is if running extended intervals. Rotella was a 30 weight by 1100 mile, Amsoil was a 30 weight by 2000 mile

I have three motorcycles to maintain. 98 VFR, 02 GL1800, 04 V-Star 1100. I have used Honda HP, Mobil 1, Mobil Racing? (their motorcycle synthetic), Castrol GTX, Castrol GTX motorcycle specific oil. Other than price, I have notice no difference between the oils. Shifting, noise, clutch action, engine smoothness � Nada!

I change the oil very 3K-4K miles so that may be why I am happy with any of these oils. I use 10W40 in all motorcycles. This is the manufactures recommended viscosity except for the V-Star. The V-Star recommends Yamalube 20W-40; but I can�t find it anywhere.

I did use Motul 3100 in a 91 Suzuki VX-800 and in that motorcycle I noticed smoother shifting.

I am in the camp that if you change it every 3K then it doesn�t much matter what you use.
