As many saw, BR put together a slightly modified 6th gen for today's track day. http://www.vfrdiscus...mp;#entry651112
The Baileyrock Get Well Fund and Carepackage Center
He high sided on the first session and is banged up quite a bit. I'll let him post up details when he is able, but wanted to let everyone know what we know as of now so you could send out prayers.
He has broken multiple bones, but has no life threatening injuries. He will need surgery. I don't want to down play it as it is a serious accident, but I also don't want to speculate too much. He was still in the emergency room the last time I checked and doesn't have a room yet to give you a number. He was at Vanderbilt's ER. I/he/someone will post up more when we know more.
5PM 10/4
BR is in his room under heavy sedation. His surgery went well. They ended up only working on one leg. The other leg was able to be manipulated into place. So, as of now, things look fairly positive for a bad situation. I will see him tomorrow evening and we'll get him a PC in the next day or two, once he is lucent and wants to post. Keep the prayers coming and thanks to everyone for all of the posts. I am sure it will bring a cheer to him when he reads them in the days ahead!

I dropped in on BR around noon today. He was his normal jovial self
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/IMG_1374.jpg
after that "how do you do", I made sure to cut off his pain medice!
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/IMG_1380.jpg
actually, he was in really good spirits considering all things:
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/IMG_1378.jpg
(well except for the drugs ) he definitely is keeping them flowing to avoid the pain!
While Vandy might be a great medical hospital, their bedside manners leave a little bit to desire. When I arrived, we still didn't know what BR's status was. His legs were wrapped, but we did not know if they had fixed both legs, if all was finished or what was next.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/IMG_1375.jpg
Finally, around 2pm, the DR came by and explained what had happened. First, BRs right leg was operated on and a rod and plates put in for the heel and the ankle/tibia break.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/rightleg.jpg

http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x176/2003vfr/track%20days%2009/Nashville%20October/rightleg001.jpg
The DR felt things went well with the surgery on the right leg. We had hoped that the left leg was all back together and in route to healing, but this was not to be.
The DR told us that his left leg was damaged the same way, but due to the location of the tibia/ankle break, they wanted to wait a couple of weeks before they operate on it to allow swelling to go down.

He should be going home in a couple of days. Luckily his girlfriend, Liz, has been helping him get through this and his brother is flying in to stay for a while as BR will not be able to put load on his legs for several months (3?).
He said to tell everyone THANK YOU for all the well wishes!
3pm 10/6 Update:
BR is headed home. TN_VFR_Girl is picking up his brother & sister in law at the airport, so at least he'll be in familiar surroundings for the next couple of weeks until his next surgery. All for now!
2pm 10/9 Update:
BR is back from a follow up visit. He has switched to the Dr that did his brother Andy's surgery as the results were so incredible. They said his right leg surgery looks well done. They have also scheduled him for his left leg to be operated upon for Wednesday the 14th. So things are progressing. He is having a little trouble getting the pain meds to work right. He has a couple different ones and he is trying to mix/match doses and types to reduce the pain and not make him sick at the same time. He has lots of folks helping (Andy&Rhonda, TN_VFR_Girl (shannon), Liz, etc, so know he is in good hands!
4:30pm Tuesday Oct. 13th
OK kids, off to what is hopefully my final surgery tomorrow to repair my left leg/ankle.
Some good news is that they think I will only need to be in a wheel chair for another 6-8 weeks instead of 3-4 months if tomorrows surgery goes well, at the time I should be able to move to crutches and have vastly increased mobility.
Thanks again for all the well wishes everyone.

Well, back to 3-4 months in the wheelchair with the level of heel damage, should know more on the 27th after my first follow-up.

Update 10-28-09
Well just had my first follow-up visit with the surgeon yesterday and I have to say it did not go well!
He was not very optimistic on the chance that my left ankle will be a usable joint anytime in the near future. Turns out the impact slammed the bottom bone/joint an inch or two into the bottom of the upper bone pulverizing it and all the cartilage in the joint area. He says he did all he could to make a joint out of what was left and did say there is a chance that some type of usable joint might form that could be usable, but fusing the joint together might be the only option down the road. :(
Anyway I'm still 3-5 months from total bone healing and at least 3 months from any weight bearing on either leg.
Have to say I'm pretty depressed about the results, but I'll suck it up and make the best of the situation.
I also decided to Stop taking the Oxycontin right now and just use Demerol to hopefully control pain.
Thanks again for all the support! :fing02:

Well, I think there sending me home today if everything works out!
I tried to get extended time here the other day when I accidentally rolled over my right hand with the dislocated pinky and snapped it passed it's limit point when transferring from the wheelchair to the workout platform at PT Wednesday.
Man did that hurt, but it bends as far as you want now!
There still kicking me out!
Should start Home Care next week, I'll report back soon.
Thanks again to everyone for all the support!

Someone asked what happened!
My goal here on VFRD and most anywhere is to share Good or Bad for the benefit of the masses, doesn't matter if it was a bone head move on my part or no fault of my own. Holding info back does Not help anyone!
My crash covered both compression & twisting.
What happened, I was coming off NSS back straight and it's banking. I hit maybe 110 mph on the short straight, then drop a gear and brake short and hard to throw it into the left off the banking. This left drops you into a off camber right, short shoot straight, then another right then quick hard left into the long sweeping run onto the front banking.
I caught a rider braking into the first left and decided to make a pass in that short shoot between turns, this requires you to square off early and hammer the gas to beat the rider into the next right where it's basically a slid block pass as you slip into the other guys line. So decision made(bad one)I square off and crank hard on the throttle into the off camber right hand turn. This was really the first time I hammered the throttle in a turn for the purpose of making a pass as all other passes were mostly done under braking. Well when I hammered the throttle the rear instantly spun up(done this pass on the F4i many times and it never let go like this!) sending me drastically sideways. Don't think I chopped the throttle, but could have, but for whatever reason the rear re-hooked and I instantly HIGH SIDED!
I was thrown almost straight up in the air and I would guess I was 12-15ft above the ground looking down on both my bike and the track. I don't think I did a flip, just straight up and straight back down. I landed on my feet probably at about a 45 deg angle to my travel and I'm guessing I'm doing 50-60 mph. My surgeon said most of the severe damage especially to my left ankle was done the instant my feet/foot hit the ground. I instantly started spinning like a top down the track and was very surprised at how much centrifugal force was being applied to my body and how long and violent this went on.
When I finally came to rest on the track(never left the pavement)I knew that both my legs were broken as I could feel them(bones) moving around in my boots, especially the right broken Tibia. I was pretty beat up and already in major pain, but managed to at least lift my arm to indicate I was at least alive. I was not happy, but happy to be alive.

UPDATE DEC. 18th
Well made some decent progress with the doctors visit yesterday and actually got to STAND UP for a few seconds!!!
Couldn't believe how big of an event that simple function was for me after 2 1/2 months in the chair! The left ankle was pretty questionable with the bottom 1 1/2" of the Tibia bone & cartilage being pulverized, BUT the bone has filled in nicely and I actual have a nice separation between the bone joints that could indicate some reformation of some cartilage. If I understand correctly and that gap remains it indicates that the joint has something in between the bones like cartilage and may Not need to be fused!!!
Not out of the woods with it, but he did clear me to try and drive and was OK with me taking a very few small steps once in a while, not walk across the room or anything but the beginning of the rebuilding process. All great news to me!
No real weight bearing on the right leg yet, but he does want both feet on the ground when I weight the left.
The right leg is a little different story, total healing is in the 5 month range(2 1/2 more), but maybe another 4-6 weeks will get me to some load bearing on it.
I am actually having surgery on the right leg again next Wednesday to correct a few problems like some screws sticking out on my skin!
Shouldn't be a big deal though, I'm just glad to be on the way to walking/standing again.
Thanks again to every one's support and thoughts and I hope everyone has some great Holidays!
BR
UPDATE!!!! 1/7/10
Woo Hoo, I WALKED today! Yeah sure it was with a walker, but it was the first time I've taken steps on both legs in 3 months!!!
The Doc said everything looks Great, he was surprised at how well I was doing and that I needed to start full weight bearing on both legs(a first for the right leg, been on the left leg for 3 weeks now). After 3 weeks on full load bearing on the Left Ankle(pulverized one) the gap between the bones has maintained it's size which is a good thing!
Happy New Year to me! Many thanks to everyone for the continued thoughts, prayers and even financial support! The VFRD family is just AWESOME!!!
THANK YOU So MUCH!!!

Update 1/22/0210,
I started walking some!
I had a major breakthrough over the last few days which allowed me to actually take Small unsupported steps. It seems to be the result of using a stationary bike that a neighbor gave me just last weekend and after only 3 one hour sessions on it I was able to take a few steps w/o the major pain I was having in my feet/ankles prior to using the bike!
Amazing breakthrough for me! Now I have to return the the wheelchair to recover from the small amount of walking, but it's major progress towards real walking again.
I just need to work on stamina and extending my gate, but it will come.
Thanks again everyone!
