I don't mean to jump the gun. Just want to give everyone the most notice to make a ride on Monday. I won't set a time just yet because I know Alwaysaware was going to post up to ride as well.
The road is supposed to be open to Wrightwood so that is what I propose to do. I was thinking of a 10am to 11am start because of freeway traffic. I'll be as flexible as it takes to get more people to go. I'm going to take a camera to record some of the damage and anything else of interest.
Stop at Newcombs-coffe
Stop at ISLIP Saddle ie. The look out
Stop at Wrightwood Gas and Food?
I'll leave the return trip up to others. Was thinking taking the loop down past jackson lake and Mt. Emma rd. out to Little T

Almost didn't go. Started late and almost got taken out by a cargo van that cut in front of me just as I was passing it in the left lane of the passing lane. Gave him the benifit of the doubt and followed at a safe distance until the second passing lane, (a very short one), came up and he deliberately stradled both lanes attempting to block my pass. I passed him on the right and gestured back to him exactly the opposite of thanks for letting me pass appreciation. Not a good way to begin a ride up ACH.
There were flag men at various points through out the highway cleaning up wind blown debris with bob cats (tractors) and dump trucks, along with a band of snow plow equipped dump trucks making pot hole repair hops up and down the highway. They'd basically cruise until they found a spot marked for repair. Park in the middle of the traffic lane and do their repair. Lot's of fun coming upon this in corner.
About as fun as driving your VFR over a slab of black ice you mistook for a wet section of road near the exit of a tight turn. I'm here to tell you it is way the hell different. Luckily I was half way thinking it might be ice too, so when everything went squiddly my steer and counter steers seemed to work well enough and save me even though I was near certain I was gonna spill. Lot of ice in one shady section before Newcombs and plenty more one you go past. I turned around well before the look out at ISLIP saddle.
Upper Big Tejunga was still closed. I played around for a while on the new asphalt between two road flagged stops and had a lot of fun chasing other motorcycles up and down till about 2pm then went home.
I may have saw Allwaysaware and his friend on my first trip up. They were on the way down. Two Silver sportbikes the first one looked like maybe a VFR. About 12pm give or take.
All the areas I saw were charred with rare exceptions.
Yeah that me. We went up to Newcombs and had Breakfast. Okay more like cofee and a breakfast sandwich. They just starting back up and since it was their first day back to work they didn't have a full menu. It was good food though. We made our way up to Waterman and came across a patch of black ice that covered the entire road. We had all ready gone through several patches but this one blocked all lanes. We decided to turn around and head back down. We wanted to cut across Upper Big TJ but it was closed. When I received a cell signal, I got called into work. I had to go save the world again. I saw Captain Bob on the way up on his red 5 gen. From what I saw, it looked nice. We took lots of pics but I'm still trying to figure out how to post them since the site has gone to this new operating system. I don't see, maybe you're working on it. I've seen the moonscape after fire before.
Not pretty. Went through Aliso Cyn and Angeles Forest Hwy north of there yesterday. Pretty large burn area around that intersection.

I expect warmer weather to open up the entire road before winter shuts it down for a few months. There are warmer areas to ride in the winter. We are in a warming trend but Sunday is a ways off.

Keeping my fingers crossed all week is going to be tough!
The Angeles Crest and other local mountains that see snow aren't the only good places to ride.
You just have to watch out for the elevation and distance from the temp modulating ocean.
You know, your microclimates. :warranty:

Weather forecast for this weekend shows rain/snow showers Sunday through Tuesday tapering off to scattered showers on Wednesday. Even if they keep the road open past this weekend the road will be icy for quite a while. Alot of the upper section is shaded or kept at freezing pretty much all day. I wouldn't expect ACH to improve until next Spring. I'm glad I got my friday run in. I told you guys it was cold up there! I'm going into hibernation until Spring. So long... (but you might see me every once in a while, somewhere up in the mountains...)
